Green Day does the best Sex Pistols imitation, by far.
Avatar 1:32am

Yes, Kurt. Your FMU street cred rating will plummet, but you'll pick up fringe listeners in the Wilkes-Barre area and in pockets of Delaware and Northwestern Maryland. Your strong with the female (45-55) bracket, but you've fallen off a bit with 30-40 males who are confused by your gender-stoic print media stubborness. It's your call.

You've always spoken strongly to that demographic segment, Chalky, with that patented purr of yours. Spot scans in weaker markets reveal that adding the odd Head East cut, or even some Petra might bolster you with working men (45-55). Remember the old adage ... when all else fails ... Livingston Taylor.

Yes, Coela ... Freddie's Dead and Superfly may not have earned him same=breath mentioning with Peter Cetera and Company, but Mayfield 's catalog has shown itself to be resilient over the years. Sweet Exorcist is still a top seller in New Mexico, for instance.

Clay, to be honest i don't even know any of his late output. i'm pretty sure i wouldn't like it much; but his first album ("Curtis") and "superfly" & his Impressions material is enough to make him one of my heroes.

I gotcha Coela ... Mighty Mighty Spade and Whitey, We The People Darker Than Blue, If There's Hell Below (We're All Gonna Go), Move on Up, these were perky numbers. Socially powerful, even. But, hold them up side by side to "No Tell Lover", "Old Days", and even "Hard For ME To Tell You I'm Sorry" and you'll see that Rock N Roll HAll Of Fame Inductees, Chicago, towered above all comers in their era. Especially during the post-Kath, Danny Daucus years, when Laudir Oliviera added his congas to the mix and things really took flight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55am

  2:02am
PJ:

@CSS: Lydon's vocals (and lyrics) are really what elevated the Pistols above all the other punks in their (UK) class - otherwise, it's just speeded up Chuck Berry and Stooges (which I love, but, you know , it had been done before.)
Avatar 2:02am
Clay Pigeon:

Am I the only one who thinks Chicago was better than The Beatles? I mean, stack them up side-by-side - track-by-track - and lighter fare like Yesterday, Michelle, A Day In The Life ---- these just can't hold up to 25 Or 6-2-4, Color My World, etc. Big rock writers are starting to concur. In the next year, you'll see a seismic shift in support for the Nice Nine ... Chicago!

  2:05am

@Clay: I do not doubt that there are many Top 40 listeners who will concur that Chicago was the most innovative pop group of all time. As open-minded (and open-mined) as I try to be, I, for one, do not want to meet any of those people.

Clay, i'll be blunt! if you ever played chicago on your show -unless it was from the first album or the (white) 3-4 record live box, i turned your show off!
  2:10am
PJ:

And I have a feeling there is at least a little tongue in your cheek, Clay, but if you are going to throw down with the horn-heavy early 70s top 40 groups, Blood Sweat & Tears gets my vote over Chicago (and EWF dusts them both.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14am
coelacanth:

actually, considering that i consider c.1965 - c.1976 the renaissance of creativity in modern music, chicago (post "chicago transit authority") was one of the worst bands ever! (in my so humble opinion!)
Avatar 2:14am
Clay Pigeon:

Coela, I considered the 4.2% of the audience which may drop off if any CHicago album after say, VII, is played. It's a risk I take. As for Blood,, Sweat, and Tears, those Hot Pockets eaters can't carry Chicago's collective jock strap, though David Clayton-Thomas moose-throated yowls were amusing for a time. As far as EWF, I'll not disparage them. The outfits were occasionally too pastel in nature, but they could pen a pleasnt enough ditty, and did, on deveral occasions.

If Bob Lamm had given up his Wurlitzer a year earlier, a lot of the bad stuff might not have gone down. Instead, he bought a Kimball "Expression Machine" with Color-Glo keys when other bands were getting synthesizers, and Chicago fell-out for a couple of years and had to play catch-up with lesser bands like Puzzle and Chase. It was wrong. Coela, YOU are awesome. Chalky is awesome. I am full of shit and totally kidding and now I must go to zzzzzzzz. Love you all. Goodnight!
