Fabio, thanks for your amazing show and your generosity with the FMU audience. I don't want to try and split my pledge but I do want to let you know that yours is one of my favorite shows. I must say I have come to look forward to your time with Clay Pigeon, even though it means less of the the great music you share. Have a great marathon.

My favorite bit about "Frampton Comes Alive" is how they mixed in the crowd sound. Listening to it, you'd swear it was in some 20,000 seat arena. But it was actually recorded primarily at Winterland in San Francisco, which only holds 5,500 people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/10/16 3:32pm Stepchild:

True dat, Scott! We're wholly holey here.

Just pledged to your show, Fabio -- i actually still OWN that "I'm In You" 45, complete with that *dreamy* picture sleeve (insert 1970s teenage girl sigh here)
Even as a teenager, i had to wonder -- SOMEONE in some sort of marketing capacity MUST have realized that Frampton's "pretty boy" looks would sell records -- they sure were right!

@Stepchild, I believe the narration in "Blast of Silence" is in the _second_ person, as in "You're alone. But you don't mind that. You're a loner. That's the way it should be. You've always been alone. By now it's your trademark. You like it that way." The narration is by Lionel Stander, in many great comedies from the 1930's before he was blacklisted. He came back to be on "Hart to Hart" in the 1970s and 80s.

@coelacanth: the dark side of that is that some musicologists now deny existence of music that isn't using the chord progressions enshrined by the Beatles, outside of learned music. Not the Beatles fault, obviously, but those who defend hallowed grounds sometimes prefer to move out the walls rather than tear them down

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 3/10/16 5:23pm fred:

I like his exposition a lot - for showing someone like me who isn't musically Technical the specific qualities of The Beatles ('Eleanor Rigby' is Modal - oh, hadn't thot of that!) - but...For a Rawk Rebel, isn't the point that The Beatles expanded & evolved Pop into the Weird ? The opposite, in other words? & - yeah - singling out The Beatles as thee single 'Classic' exalted Artistes in all of Pop/Rawk who achieved anything - that rankles w/ me...

fred, i shall try to heed that supreme advice!
- i once had a great conversation in a bar that went bad when i said i didn't like "stairway to heaven"! he said i'm just saying it to be contrary, even though i had solid, specific reasons for not liking it. he could not accept it so decided i was full of shit and then rapid-fire asked me about many other such things.
...there was also no way anyone could possibly dislike "hotel california".
     Thu. 3/10/16 5:39pm Listener Robert:

Yes, I too for years thought it was closing theme-opening theme, until Fabio explained it.

It takes not only skill but practice to verbally articulate things about Music - like Taste. But - I maintain it can be done. Should anyone really want to. (Not to say 'I like it - or 'I don't' aren't valid statements as is...)
  Thu. 3/10/16 5:44pm melinda:

@coelecanth: that's a funny story. No one needs to defend why they don't like a song, in my opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 3/10/16 5:44pm fred:

@Carmichael: I just scored a delightful Elijah Craig (Barrel Proof) that was made better by sharing it with the right people. In a way pledging to the station is like that: sharing the good stuff with people who appreciate it
  Thu. 3/10/16 5:46pm JP:

Well said, fred. I know that's certainly a part of my motivation for pledging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/10/16 5:47pm Scott Williams:

prize on the plate right now, another Criterion DVD, Howard Brookner's
"BURROUGHS" doc! $20 pledge or more to get in the running
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/10/16 5:47pm coelacanth:

i'm not so skilled -especially when i'm half-drunk. -but man, someone telling me i'm lying really gets me. why would i lie about that and then admit that i like some monkees songs! (and other led zeppelin material as well.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/10/16 5:48pm Cecile:

I think people who are insecure attack others' musical taste.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/10/16 5:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Theodor Adorno's 'Noise' is a pertinent text here. I acknowledge the very considerable talents of the Eagles - & I wonder how I'd react to them differently if I was *overexposed* to them & force fed them! That is - there *is* a socio-cultural aspect to Music. It marks Territory. As Pete Townshend was always explicit about - Music is a Weapon...

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/10/16 5:50pm cory:

whatever happened with that printing the internet bs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/10/16 5:50pm coelacanth:

(and here i insert my confession that i do like a handful of early eagles songs!)
  Thu. 3/10/16 5:51pm melinda:

Overexposure can definitely shape our dislikes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 3/10/16 5:51pm fred:

@coelacanth: My best conversation in a bar started with my saying I didn't like whisky, then getting into a conversation about music while tasting different Irish Whiskeys. Turned out the guy was the owner of the bar, so I kinda got a scholarship in whisky, plus a lot about Irish/English nuances, all for free. Still, The Pogues were there the night before and I missed that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/10/16 5:53pm coelacanth:

oh that's Great fred! (well, not the last part...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/10/16 5:54pm Carmichael:

Don't ever miss a chance to see the Pogues, Fred. Even with Phil Chevron gone. I saw them several times in both Ireland and the US. They are like a firestorm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/10/16 5:54pm cory:

while we're talking about it, i could use a pigeon bump
  Thu. 3/10/16 5:54pm flashbazbo:

I'm just feeling that the hipper than. Beatle deniers are living in musical worlds that are actually dependent on Beatles advances. And not just music but the whole delivery systems of their music. Free form radio, regional scenes. Remember this tho: guitar bands are out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/10/16 5:55pm Carmichael:

@coel: I feel about the Eagles the same as Lebowski.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/10/16 5:55pm coelacanth:

(dwelling on...) i was in fact over-exposed to "hotel california"...and now i'd much rather hear the jethro tull song that the eagles stole that chord progression from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 3/10/16 5:56pm fred:

@Carmichael: I did see the Pogues, but learning they had been in my fave pub when I wasn't there really hurt
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/10/16 5:56pm Carmichael:

@Fred: Ow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 3/10/16 5:57pm cory:

I used to talk smack about Sinatra - Rawk Hater - White Jazz - Square generation. Love him now of course...He was before my time so I didn't get it yet. Came to mock but stayed to pray: made fun of Crooning - realized that was because it had 'got inside' me...So younger age groups may well be about The Beatles (like people in British Comedy have made a point of being Not Monty Python for some time now...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 3/10/16 5:58pm fred:

Scott, I still get a thrill every week when I hear Giant Man too. I can't believe such a seemingly serious character as Fabio was flicking you in the art house theater, and during such a perfect film as Mulholland Drive, no less! He definitely owes you something in my book...
