I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

good afternoon everyone.

Here's a very interesting interview of Tsutomu Oohashi aka Shoji Yamashiro, the leader of Geinoh Yamashirogumi, written by a WFMU listener CG Watkins: www.sidianersatzvanes.com...

Listening from the laundromat today! :)

A little sightseeing info: 恐山 is a series of mountains in Northern Japan and is an entrance to hell and heaven... this is supposedly the hell... miner8.com... and there's a bloody red pond there: blogimg.goo.ne.jp... & heaven: pds.exblog.jp... Never been there myself but both heaven and hell seems to be quite beautiful places.
Avatar    Mon. 2/29/16 5:14pm Mayuko:

dramatic laundry time for david!

(all the socks and shirts suffer in the endless whirlpool... which actually probably ends in 45 min...)
Avatar    Mon. 2/29/16 5:18pm listener james from westwood:

That Hell pond is frightening!
Avatar    Mon. 2/29/16 5:23pm Mayuko:

I think I heard that it's some kind of algous thing makes it red, but I'm not sure. It really is frightening!
Avatar    Mon. 2/29/16 5:28pm listener james from westwood:

Odd, sometimes unique species can thrive in isolated environments like that, so it's entirely possible.
Avatar    Mon. 2/29/16 5:35pm Mayuko:

Yah, I think you're right. And there's volcanos and they say it smells so bad/strange all around there in the hell because of sulfur - with that and the red pond, people in the old times must have thought it REALLY was a place with supernatural beings or something like that.

Marewrew is these young Ainu ladies from Hokkaido, the big northern island of Japan: kansai.pia.co.jp...

Avatar    Mon. 2/29/16 6:19pm Mayuko:

Thank YOU for listening, Rich in Washington! I was feeling a bit hesitated to play Mongolian hip-hop after reading this article about them on NPR www.npr.org... Because I'm not entirely sure if I want to support the message they are trying to deliver. But For this song Am Asuuy, at least I learned a bit about its context, so thought it was safe. Mongolian hiphop does look interesting though! Mixing their traditional throat singing with it etc.
Avatar    Mon. 2/29/16 6:26pm Mayuko:

For those who can read Japanese, the super interesting article about Am Asuuy: synodos.jp... Also there's the youtube video of the song there.

is this Bjork singing?
Avatar    Mon. 2/29/16 6:55pm Mayuko:

Yup! It's one of the her bands. Kinda make sense that I seem to remember she said she opened up a show for Einstürzende Neubauten a long time ago (if I remember correctly...)
Avatar Mon. 2/29/16 6:57pm Rich in Washington:

I should track down that album. I didn't realize KUKL sounded that cool.

What a spectacularly amazing show Mayuko!
French translation time: "avec voix chuchotee" means "with whispered voice"
I bookmarked what I found about Marewrew, which is not much I can understand, but I'll be lobbying for their coming to France. At first they had sounds reminding me of Mongolian long song, but the end was closer to Yakut, that's very interesting to me how Ainu people might share cultural traditions with Siberian and Mongolian people both
Thanks for that amazing article and for playing Geinoh Yamashirogumi. 25 years ago, I got a portable CD player for Xmas. One week later, I got mugged and that gift was gone. I had their Akira soundtrack in there, and I asked the robbers to hand the CD back to me because it was some weird Japanese stuff they wouldn't like anyway. It made so little sense that they did, so I still have that record today. They didn't even throw it out, they took it out and gave it to me before kicking me out of the train
And, of course, many many thanks for playing Byambajargal
Avatar    Mon. 3/14/16 2:18am Mayuko:

That would be wonderful if people in France get to see Marewrew's show! I'm sure someone at their office speaks English but if there's any Japanese assistance needed, I'd be more than happy to help. I was fascinated by Ainu culture when I was a teenager, and that's how I got interested in all other northern people too. It's very interesting to see (hear) these musical gradation.

I'm glad you were ok and they gave you back Geinoh Yamashirogumi - that is kinda funny (although not really!)
