Tony's all up in that dude's metal grate.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:02pm Tony Coulter:

Howdy, Uncle!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:06pm V Priceless:

howdy, men of the stream!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/1/16 12:07pm JtotheK:

good afternoon everyone.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, V Priceless & JtotheK ... and women of the stream!!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:10pm listener james from westwood:

Argh, held up by a train, so in a bit late but happy to be here now!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:11pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Listener James! Damn those Westwood trains!!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:14pm listener james from westwood:

Being held up by a train is at least more legal than holding up a train, but a lot less lucrative.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/1/16 12:14pm Carmichael:

Heya Tony and people.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, Carmichael!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:16pm Rich in Washington:

I was on the wrong channel and just realized what time it was.
What'd I miss?
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:18pm Tony Coulter:

Heya Rich!

The show started with a 10-minute monologue on lima beans. Other that that, you didn't miss anything.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:19pm Tony Coulter:

Found this Folks on Fire cassette in a thrift store (years ago).
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:22pm listener james from westwood:

Does Oregon vote today, Tony? New Jersey isn't worth a damn in the primaries (June), so I'm envious of those who are in states that are.
  Tue. 3/1/16 12:28pm Dean:

Three days ago the band posted a promotion of this show on their Facebook page.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/1/16 12:28pm JtotheK:

this tape is great. i liked the last song, because he sang that sometimes he gets bent out of shape. i can relate.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:29pm Tony Coulter:

@ Listener James: Nope, Oregon doesn't vote for awhile. We are equally irrelevant.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:30pm Tony Coulter:

Sorry for the tracklist chaos there. I only partially blame myself: the tracks are listed in the wrong order on the cassette.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:32pm Tony Coulter:

... but I eventually got it sorted out....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/1/16 12:33pm JtotheK:

if there is contact info on the tape i'd write a letter to let them know. unacceptable.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:33pm listener james from westwood:

Argh, maddening. It's not like OR or NJ have either a lot of voters or some critical demographics or anything.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:35pm Tony Coulter:

A belated heya to Dean!
  Tue. 3/1/16 12:42pm Dean:

Alabama, Alaska Republican Caucus, American Samoa, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Democrats Abroad
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:43pm Tony Coulter:

So I would say that unlike many of the bands I play on Tape Hiss, Folks on Fire could have enjoyed some mainstream success in the '80s, if things had worked out for them.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:44pm listener james from westwood:

The networks will be busy tonight!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:45pm Tony Coulter:

Sanders swept New Zealand, I hear. (They are the first to vote.)
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:48pm listener james from westwood:

I'll keep that in mind in case I have to become a Democrat Abroad!
  Tue. 3/1/16 12:48pm folksonfire:

Tony — We actually received a letter, I kid you not, from EMI Records (the Beatles' label, no less) just weeks after we broke up. I still have it. It said: "We're hearing some interesting things about the band. Could you send us a tape?"
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:50pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, folksonfire!! Nice to know you're listening in.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:52pm Tony Coulter:

About the letter from EMI: damn ... talk about bad timing. What could have been....
  Tue. 3/1/16 12:54pm folksonfire:

Thanks for playing it! Yep — re: EMI letter. What could have been ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/1/16 12:55pm JtotheK:

i'm off to a meeting -- hope to be back in a bit. really enjoyed this tape Tony -- @folksonfire - this is great!
  Tue. 3/1/16 12:56pm folksonfire:

I know that both Laurie Anderson and Jerry Harrison (of Talking Heads) got copies of the LP. No idea if they passed it on to anyone or gave it a nod.
  Tue. 3/1/16 12:58pm folksonfire:

Crowd noise here stolen from Cheap Trick at Budokan ...
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 12:59pm Tony Coulter:

Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/1/16 12:59pm Uncle Michael:

I recognized the crowd noise!
  Tue. 3/1/16 12:59pm Dean:

And the crowd sues!
  Tue. 3/1/16 1:01pm folksonfire:

Thanks again for playing the tape, Tony. Truly appreciate your dedication to getting forgotten music heard. Told all my friends to listen today. All best, Steve
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:03pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks for showing up, Steve -- and for making the music in the first place!!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:04pm Rich in Washington:

Hi, I am an attorney representing the audience from Cheap Trick at Budokan, here to serve this cease and desist notice.
  Tue. 3/1/16 1:05pm folksonfire:

Yikes - bye!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

Correction: side A of this Polyrock is studio stuff, except for this one track on now.....
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:11pm Rich in Washington:

Don't go! I'm also bearing donuts. That's what a great litigant I am.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:13pm Tony Coulter:

So, as you may have noticed, today's Tape Hiss is/will be mostly focused on New Wavey, song-oriented stuff.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

... in other words, that is today's secret theme.
  Tue. 3/1/16 1:22pm Matt:

the secret is out. and it's great.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:23pm Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, Matt! Glad you approve.
  Tue. 3/1/16 1:28pm Dean:

Wikimajig notes that Hurrah was *the* spot for new wave, post-punk, etc., in NYC. Among the bands that played there, The Sleepers, an SF band whom I remember seeing in LA. They were pretty amazing.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:32pm Tony Coulter:

I *think* Hurrah is where I saw Polyrock -- can't remember for sure.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:35pm Chris from DC:

Never heard Polyrock live before. Pretty cool.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:35pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Chris!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:37pm Tony Coulter:

There's some kind of BBC transcription disc of them live on the BBC -- would love to find that! www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:40pm Tony Coulter:

Their first album is tops in my book: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:52pm Rich in Washington:

I remember getting the RIOR catalog for many years in the 80s but honestly don't think I ever ordered anything - just picked up RIOR tapes here and there. Now I want more of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/1/16 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the music, Tony. I gotta head out.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:53pm Tony Coulter:

Adios, Uncle M!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Just popping in to bellow a hello to Captain Tony and all you, his his merry crew.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:54pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy, matey Doug!!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:58pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: There are definitely some really good ROIR tapes, some of which (like the Polyrock) have yet to be reissued. They can still be had for pretty cheap, fortunately, via the interwebs.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 1:59pm Doug Schulkind:

I'm on the pop (not poop) deck. Sitting here with my dad in his new assisted-living residence. We've got the '30s jazz channel gurgling out of the cable TV. A nice counterpoint to this Tellus charmer.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 2:00pm listener james from westwood:

How do, Doug and dad!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

Details at Eleven (on now) released an excellent album in 1986: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 2:04pm Rich in Washington:

Heya, Doug!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 2:07pm Doug Schulkind:

For those who can reassemble with Give the Drummer Radio at 6pm, I will be presenting a memorial broadcast for my mother, who passed away last week: wfmu.org...
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 2:10pm Rich in Washington:

I am so sorry to hear, Doug! My thoughts are with you and your family.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 2:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Thank you, Rich. Your thoughts are most welcome thoughts.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 2:24pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, Doug, what can one say, really. My thoughts have been with you and yours as well. Deepest condolences from me -- and, I'm sure, all the stream's listeners....
  Tue. 3/1/16 2:28pm Dean:

Thanks, Tony, yes, from us, too. So hard. I hope having the platform to make a public tribute like this helps.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 2:28pm Doug Schulkind:

My radio family has been and continues to be loving and wonderful. Much strength and community for me to lean on.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 2:28pm Rich in Washington:

I wish I still had the Guitar Player magazine from around this time with this feature on 'New York Guitar', Live Skull, Sharp, Rat At Rat R, and, of course, Sonic Youth. It was pretty interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/1/16 2:32pm JtotheK:

i snuck out of aforementioned meeting for a few mins -- and have to get right back to it but -- my condolences, Doug S. i'll be tuning into your program this evening, via the app...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/1/16 2:32pm JtotheK:

@tony, since i'm missing the tapes - thanks for the lp suggestions, i'll check those out!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 2:44pm Tony Coulter:

I have the Club of Rome cassette and may play it on a future Tape Hiss.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 2:44pm Tony Coulter:

This thing, I mean: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 2:51pm northguineahills:

Crap, I missed UM's telling us what happened to you Doug during his mic break, I'm truly sorry, and hope all is as good as it can be. hugs all around!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 2:54pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, NGH.
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 3:00pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Tony, for the fine bunch of tapes!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 3:01pm Tony Coulter:

You're most welcome, James!
Avatar Tue. 3/1/16 3:01pm Tony Coulter:

See you next week everyone!

And don't forget to give Doug a radio group hug....
