SABBATH! hiya Scott.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:03pm Cheyenne:

Sounds different than that karaoke backing track from yesterday
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:03pm Scott Williams:

Hola Carm!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:03pm Matt from Springfield:

The TRIFECTA Sabbath song! Getting the Dave Hill Show off to an early start today?!

Hi Scott and Trifectites!
  Mon. 2/22/16 3:03pm Brendan:

Oh my!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:04pm Scott Williams:

yeah Cheyenne, Sabbath is NOTHING without Midi!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:05pm Matt from Springfield:

Shouldn't there be a Karaoke that's like Rock Band? Someone sings along to metal, and others can air guitar/bass/drum in back.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:05pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I highly hope that no members of Black Sabbath have passed away today. *checks news* Nope, all is well. Whew.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:07pm Guido from Cologne:

I think I have heard of this group.
I think they were related to a les baxter soundtrack!
Were they?

Joe Walsh, '72, hard rock, Dunhill/ABC...did I mention that it's Clay Pigeon's birthday today? ;)

HBD Clay!!!
  Mon. 2/22/16 3:18pm Chucktown Dan:

What recording of Walsh was
that ?
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:20pm Scott Williams:

SUP EVERYONE! Surfin Bird was wrong speed, btw - that was a lady singing! HBD Clay Pigeon!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:21pm Cheyenne:

Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:22pm Marcel M:

My initial reaction was that it was at the wrong speed, but then I decided it was just hippie noise creators hopped up on goof balls doing their thing.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:24pm Matt from Springfield:

HA! I was about to ask if was the wrong speed (a common occurrence 'round these parts, the wondering that is...), then quite enjoyed it! Then found it was the wrong speed--and I enjoyed it just as it was! :D
  Mon. 2/22/16 3:24pm Brendan:

Roy Buchanan did a nice cover of Turn to Stone
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:26pm chris:

Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:30pm Matt from Springfield:

Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:32pm Carmichael:

This is the most un-progressive rock version of this song ever.

Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:44pm glenn:

Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:45pm Matt from Springfield:

Yep, movie duets in "Love Lift Us Up" w/ Joe Cocker, and with Bill Medley in "I Had The Time of My Life".
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 3:45pm Matt from Springfield:

The vocal sounds like Ernest T. Bass backwards.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:02pm Cliff:

I'm certain this will be an amazing cover of Sgt. Pepper's, just from the intro
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:02pm Cliff:

Which I did not understand a single word of

Yeah, but he's no Shooby Taylor.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:09pm V Priceless:

hey Scott..great set, Gil is the Gil-man!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:10pm Parq:

Carmichael for the win.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:10pm Matt from Springfield:

EPIC! Bravo!

(As for me, Cliff!)
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:11pm Cliff:

Well I've never even heard of Shooby Taylor, so Gilberto Gil FTW for me!
  Mon. 2/22/16 4:11pm bloopy:

Hey all
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:13pm Wild Neil:

@Scott et al-Good afternoon! Any chance of King Crimson today? Also, I notice I talk to the Wind has Judy on it...huh?? Could somebody please explain? Who IS Judy Dibble (goes to Wikipedia)...ok, but she recorded with King Crimson??? @Scott, can you play something from Earthbound by King Crimson? It is quite reckless in its jams and un-Fripp like in some regards...
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:15pm Wild Neil:

@Scott-awesome show!!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:16pm Guido from Cologne:

This is not a flute!
This is self-discovered overtone-singing.
Bernard Stollman made a "Yodeling Astrologer" out of it.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:17pm Dominick:

Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:17pm Cliff:

If Scott is taking requests, then I'd like an entire hour of Gilberto Gil please
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:17pm Cliff:

I'm sure that's not too unreasonable
  Mon. 2/22/16 4:18pm SeanG:

nice! forgot about the Mij!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:18pm Matt from Springfield:

Nina Simone, covered by The Space Lady, covered by Dave Matthews while schizoid, thinking he's Slim Whitman.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:19pm Cliff:

Guido - this track would work on Dan Bodah's show too
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:19pm glenn:

technically, she recorded with giles, giles and fripp.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:20pm Guido from Cologne:

Poor Jim Holmberg was pulled into the studio, given a few hours and then be told "this is it. album is finished".
Holmberg wasn't all too happy with it.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:20pm Cliff:

Yeah but Matt, then we'd have to listen to Dave Matthews
  Mon. 2/22/16 4:21pm Brendan:

Scott this show is great thanks!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:22pm Cliff:

Once I went to a record store to buy something from Mates of State, and they didn't have anything from them, but they had every single frigging thing Dave Matthews had ever released in his entire career just lined up in the CD racks
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:22pm Cliff:

In multiple copies too. I couldn't believe it
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:22pm Wild Neil:

@Cliff-how did your shroom adventure end up? A good trip I hope?
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:23pm Matt from Springfield:

Beautiful stuff, first I heard of Pigeons!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:24pm Cliff:

It was great Wild Neil, thanks for asking! Too cold to go outside, so I just stayed indoors grooving to WFMU all day (as evidenced by my multiple semi-bizarre postings all over the playlists that day)
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cliff: Just pretend it's Mij instead.
(It is? Okay so pretend it's Dave Matthews pretending he's Mij pretending...)
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:25pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cliff: Oh wow! I would think WFMU could be too unpredictable for a trip, but glad that worked out great!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:27pm Wild Neil:

@Cliff-glad you are safe and well hydrated. My twelve year old is over-hydrated. He drinks like six water bottles a day and pees every thirty minutes every time he comes to visit.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:29pm Cliff:

Matt - I've tripped so many times while listening to WFMU that I'm used to it, it actually keeps me grounded in a weird way ;)

Wild Neil - I think hydration is only really that important if you're stuck in a sweaty nightclub on ecstasy. You can just eat normally on psychedelics (though some lose their hunger and only want to eat a single banana or whatever)
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:31pm Cliff:

As I told Daniel Blumin on Friday, I spent the summer of 2012 frying my face off almost every Saturday listening to Rex, Terre T., Rob Weisberg, and then 3 hours of Blumin and his bizarro talk breaks. Good times!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:32pm northguineahills:

When I trip, I tend to be the one curating the music for everyone. I'm not a control freak, but when on psychedelics, I'm a control freak about non-natural sound.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:32pm Chris from DC:

I start many a week with this Wall of Voodoo.
  Mon. 2/22/16 4:32pm Ike:

How does this singer know that a snake wants to come inside? Snakes can't reach the doorbell. This song is silly.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:32pm Cliff:

Rex gets a lotta extra reverb when you listen to him on acid
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:32pm Matt from Springfield:

Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:33pm Wild Neil:

C'mon everybody! "I'm on the Mexican.....Radio!" woo
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:34pm Matt from Springfield:

@W Neil: Meet you after the show for margaritas and barbecued iguana!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:34pm northguineahills:

Heck, even camping this last summer, I got everyone's phones, and preprogrammed everyone's playlist while we shroomed, everyone was happy w/ the results (Using the WFMU app would have killed the batteries).
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:34pm Wild Neil:

@Scott-THANK YOU for including the "year" column...it is very instructive and helpful.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:35pm Cliff:

northguineahills, if we were shrooming together, I'd be the one constantly subverting your control-freak tendencies (at least until you kick me outta the group)
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:37pm Cliff:

I'd switch everybody's phones around and then fall over laughing when you realize they're all listening to the "wrong" playlists ;P
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:37pm Wild Neil:

Mij is insane.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:39pm northguineahills:

But that's the thing, they weren't playlists, they were instantaneous music selections based on the conversation at hand mostly via youtube and which phone had the most juice.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:39pm Bas NL:

(@ Scott: Shure about the Pigeons title? Can't find that as a track name on the Mie page listing...I wanna buy it! ;))
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:40pm Matt from Springfield:

"...then listen to this 15 min 47 secs from Miles Davis Kind of Blue, then this 2 min 38 sec fragment from the Beatles Revolution 9, followed by..."

"But the jokes on YOU! You listened to someone else's phone...all along! Your values aren't set in stone, man!"

"I'm scared! Just let me look at this banana a couple more hours before I eat it. I must get a feel of its suchness. Now I'll look at it a little more unpeeled..."
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:40pm Cliff:

Oh, well that sounds alright, I'd go along with that. At least you're not some sort of playlist Nazi
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:41pm thedunkel:

Jim Price pencils for all!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:41pm Wild Neil:

Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:42pm Matt from Springfield:

I'm happy to 'Draze with all the people here!

@dunkel: They write for an entire minute!
  Mon. 2/22/16 4:44pm Polyus:

Oh yes Aluk Todolo, you should.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:44pm Cliff:

I found the Youtube app eats up a lot of juice on my iPhone btw, even when I'm not using it. I ended up deleting it...supposedly there are better apps for watching Youtube videos that won't kill your battery but I haven't bothered researching this in detail yet
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:46pm DreamCricket:

The sound of 5 o'clock rolling in!
  Mon. 2/22/16 4:46pm jordan:

hey! hip Bolero. who did this version? we are planning a Bolero themed event this year!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:46pm Matt from Springfield:

This song again!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:47pm thedunkel:

@Matt - hahahaha!
  Mon. 2/22/16 4:48pm BriJet:

Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:48pm northguineahills:

I just use the browser on my phone for youtube, it eats less of the battery.

It was mostly international art students that were 15 years my junior that were friends w/ my wife, and they were curious about all types of music, and once the schrooms kicked in, I gave them a tour. Then we listened to the natural ambiance.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:48pm Bas NL:

Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:49pm northguineahills:

Thanks Scott! I gotta jump!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:49pm Scott Williams:

Hola, Brij! @jordan, it's Kebekelektrik, aka Gino Soccio. @Bas, yep, that's correct - mie.limitedrun.com...
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:49pm Cliff:

Natural sounds sound the best, for sure
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:49pm Matt from Springfield:

@jordan: "Bolero" by Kebekelektrik (i.e., "Quebec electrique")
It's available on iTunes!

Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:53pm Matt from Springfield:

Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 4:55pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey Scott, t'as pas un peu de musique française!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:02pm Bas NL:

From Phairin Phonphibun to Phonophobia.. ;)
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:02pm Carmichael:

No wonder that Samantha Jones song sounded like a Carole King demo. It was produced by Gerry Granahan, a Brill building type from the same era. He was famous for My Boyfriend's Back.
  Mon. 2/22/16 5:03pm frenchee:

heya FRENCHY1! Scott, my dog is tying to find the critter in the speakers here. Lots of head-cocking. Le woof (moo)!

...read things where Floyd kinda disowns or downplays Ummagumma. The peoples disagrees...
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:08pm TDK60:

I dig that 'Dark Continent' album by W.o.V. & 'Ummagumma' is maybe my fave P.F.!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Umma's the one when wuz a kid & didn't know / didn't have real dope yet - you would put it on & turn on all yer funky lights & try 'n' freak out...& it worked pretty well...

Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:14pm geezerette:

Reminds me of Zappa,...& now want to hear Beefheart...
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:19pm Cliff:

geezerette, Matt from Springfield was requesting Dave Matthews a while back. Dave Matthews.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:20pm dale:

never heard this. it's brilliance.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:20pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cliff: NO, I requested only a Dave Matthews voice with a Slim Whitman mind, singing an imagined cover by the Space Lady of a Nina Simone song. I mean it's really that simple!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:20pm geezerette:

There's a planetarium in my head!
It doesn't contain Dave Matthews...
  Mon. 2/22/16 5:21pm Roy:

¡Hooooo rayyyyy!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:21pm Cliff:

Oh, alright then, no problemo ;P
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:21pm Scott Williams:

Ahooooyyyy Royyy!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:22pm Cliff:

geezerette, there was a record store I went to once that contained ALL the Dave Matthews. (I already told the story above)
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:23pm Cliff:

@4:22 - and NO Mates of State. I was sad.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:23pm geezerette:

Wow Cliff, did they have anything else?
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:24pm Cliff:

I can't remember, I stormed out in protest
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:24pm Carmichael:

Tower of Dave Matthews Records.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:26pm geezerette:

Funny story! I'm on your side!
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:29pm Cliff:

I don't even mind Dave Matthews that much, it's just that (especially back then) you could flip on pretty much any pop/rock radio station and hear him within an hour. But they couldn't be bothered to stock just one copy of Mates of State's new album, no way, that would take some rack space away from Dave Freakin' Matthews
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:30pm Michael in Seattle:

perhaps why so many record stores disappeared.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:31pm Cliff:

Exactly, Amazon ate their lunch by going after the long tail
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:31pm Marcel M:

Sweet. I've been meaning to listen to this.
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:31pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cliff: It's the Big Media saturation environment of narrow authoritarian thinking that's driven most of us to Freedom in Freeform at FMU. Forget improving that model, let's make a new one (that actually, goes all the way back to 1958! :)
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:32pm geezerette:

and the tail is very, very long....
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:33pm Cliff:

Yep, it amazes me how radio stations in the early days were so much more free to do what they want, and now they're all so homogenized
  Mon. 2/22/16 5:34pm Polyus:

So this is brand new?

re: radio ... follow the money; no, wait, now no one wants to ever pay for music. sounds like their business model just ate itself.

Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wull Michael - right now there's some rot that new royalty rates are shutting down small broadcasters - webcasters & such. They usually make negative profit (it costs them) - while major streamers rake it in & pay Artists almost nothing too. I give all my money to ComCast - who bring me all of it! - & presumably pay no Royalties @ all?
Avatar Mon. 2/22/16 5:39pm Michael in Seattle:

Merci, France
