Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Hi. A few years ago, one winter weekend, my wife and I drove down to Springfield and went to the Lincoln Museum. It was pretty good. I am not sure if it is open these days because of all of the budget cuts though.

My brain has been playing a brass marching band version of VU's "What's Going ON" for the last week. Now I just need a brass marching band and an arranger.
  Fri. 2/12/16 12:59pm Dean:

801 is something of a Rorschach test. I first heard it in the context of progressive rock, featured on a show devoted to the genre. Never occurred to me it prompted hardcore, but yeah, that makes sense, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:04pm coelacanth:

this is so good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:07pm Parq:

The way I remember 801 is as part of a transition from progressive rock represented by the likes of Genesis and Strawbs to the more out-there stuff represented by Eno. It was kind of a coming of age thing for me. From there, I went to folks like Pere Ubu and the Residents, and mainstream college-town stuff got left behind once and for all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:09pm Artie Haywire:

@Parq: So, when progressive rock actually lived up to it's name and went somewhere else?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:09pm coelacanth:

hmm. i see little connection between 801 live and hardcore. ..actually i never thought of Eno or 801 in relation to even punk rock.
- i never thought of either as prog rock either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:10pm Brian in UK:

Post Punk anyone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:11pm coelacanth:

i'm label-impaired.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:12pm Artie Haywire:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:13pm Brian in UK:

It's the genre-fication of music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:13pm coelacanth:

pressed, i guess i might, for the moment, say 801 fused progressive rock, progressive jazz, and pop.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:15pm 67tele:

got any theories about johnny mathis?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:15pm coelacanth:

ha! "genre-fication"!
  Fri. 2/12/16 1:15pm Dean:

I heard 801 as a casual outing by former Roxy Music and connected personnel having fun with pop forms. The progressive legacy was there, albeit not the wispy Genesis variety. At the time they were neither progressive nor pop "enough" for me. (There's a pun embedded in that adverb.) I enjoy it much more now than I did when it was released.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:15pm βrian:

Strange that I never confuse Uncle Michael with Bryce, or vice versa, when I stream-hop ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:16pm Uncle Michael:

I think we're lucky Johnny Mathis skipped those Olympic trials.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:16pm Brian in UK:

@67tele he was an influence on early Arthur Lee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:17pm Uncle Michael:

I have a little bit more hair than Bryce.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:17pm Goyim in the AM:

I think the connection between prog and hardcore isn't really audible all of the time, but it's there in the interviews and in my own experience. Lots of Yes and King Crimson fans. The Replacements started as a Yes cover band.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:18pm βrian:

I'm just don't hear it, UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:18pm Brian in UK:

The Follicles - a progressive funk punk outfit.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:18pm 67tele:

ah yes i can hear that...
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:19pm βrian:

There's got to be a pRogaine rock genre, though I'll not seek it out.
  Fri. 2/12/16 1:20pm Dean:

"The Replacements started as a Yes cover band," is the most funny thing I've heard so far all day. I had no idea Yes went through a phase of chronic drunkenness, passing out on stage, fighting, throwing up...

Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:23pm 67tele:

they also played Kiss covers...beautiful AND stoned (sorry...)
  Fri. 2/12/16 1:24pm Dean:

Point taken. I only ever try to play Close to the Edge after I'm sauced. As I recall, it's always note perfect.

Who among us has not played a KISS cover?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:24pm Uncle Michael:

This band sounded lots of ways. This is my fifth go at them. man, Ken's played them a ton.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:25pm Brian in UK:

Have you heard the Wondermints song 'In and Around Greg Lake' from Bali?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:25pm coelacanth:

i bought 801 because it said "Eno" on it. i'd never heard of it and didn't really know Roxy music. i guess that's why i was slightly disappointed. it doesn't have the depth of Eno's studio albums. it seemed like they's just learned the songs and hastily made new arrangements that weren't as good as the original conceptions.
...but, i still like it a lot, and especially TNK.

Trying to think what sauce would best pair with Yes. Maybe a bottle of Blue Nun?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:26pm Brian in UK:

ENO = English National Opera. Catches me out too.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:27pm Alex In Illinois:

I don't think I've played a Kiss cover. At least I don't think I have. Okay, I remember learning the song 2000 Man which was a Stones song covered by Kiss.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:28pm βrian:

@Alex: But you've worn the grease paint, surely?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:29pm coelacanth:

'def. a connection between KC and punk.
...i never heard that about yes, or the replacements. 'pretty funny!
  Fri. 2/12/16 1:31pm Dean:

TNK was the prog rock show rotation tune, for sure. Have heard "In and Around Greg Lake," and the title alone always provokes a chuckle. For Yes, a 1970 Siberian Khatru, which, believe me, has a kick on it like a mule. "Black Diamond," that's the KISS tune I've played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:31pm coelacanth:

i never liked that wilco line! i have a low kiss tolerance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:32pm coelacanth:

oh,yeah. didn't yes put TNK on their first album?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:36pm Brian in UK:

First Yes album was OK (just). Saw them in 1969 Jon Hendrick came on stage and scat sang with Jon Anderson for a couple of numbers. Surprised me. The Who headlined, need I say anymore.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:37pm βrian:

Helvetica Blues?
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:39pm listener james from westwood:

I'd heard Lee was a singer later in his career, but had no idea he'd tackled this one!
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:39pm Alex In Illinois:

I recall Danielle Dax recording a version of TNK that had part of Talking Head's Once in a Lifetime groove sample in it. I understand the urge to put lots of layers into that song, so it was refreshing to hear the Junior Parker version
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:40pm Rich in Washington:

Jesus, I had no idea this album existed!
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:40pm chromaphone:

Not sure if I would call him a "singer"...
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:41pm ndbob:

That was amazing
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:41pm listener james from westwood:

His metal albums much later might be closer to what you'd expect from Dracula/Saruman...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:42pm Brian in UK:

He came from Morodor.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:43pm Rich in Washington:

This is almost Bowie-like.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:43pm Rich in Washington:

I think Brown's Fire might've been the first song that really got my attention as a tiny lad, esp. for the intro.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:44pm Uncle Michael:

I am the god of hellfire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:44pm Goyim in the AM:

Poor, poor Vincent Crane.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:48pm Rich in Washington:

@UM: Exactly! What was cooler than that to a 7 year old? Everything still pales in comparison to this day for me.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:49pm Rich in Washington:

But I don't think I've ever listened to the B-side and I know I have at least one copy of Fire.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:49pm chromaphone:

I've been playing clavicord on my digital piano lately and friggin loving it. This track is neat, never heard it before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:49pm Parq:

UM, isn't it remarkable how it always starts things going on the comments when you play 801?
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:49pm chromaphone:

I mean clavinet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:50pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, Parq. Never fails!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 1:51pm Webhamster Henry:

I know nothing about The Peppers. Any info?
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 1:52pm Rich in Washington:

dunno if it's because their end is near but I am really digging Sabbath lately, even some of their lesser albums/cuts, etc..
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:53pm Uncle Michael:

Sorry chromaphone...not really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 1:57pm Brian in UK:

Just flipping back to Arthur Lee 1:16, Drachan Theaker from Arthur Brown's band played some drums on Love's Four Sail. Interesting Huh.

Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 2:02pm Rich in Washington:

The last instrumental I remember hearing on the radio as a kid(+/-) was the Hill Street Blues theme (mike post?).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 2:03pm Mike East:

just found out my new co worker is from lawrence, ks. He didn't have great things to say about the town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 2:04pm Mike East:

though to be fair, he said the music scene was decent, in cycles.
  Fri. 2/12/16 2:04pm Dean:

Best thing I can say about Lawrence, KS, because it's the only thing I know about the place, is that Martin Logan loudspeakers are designed and manufactured there. That's a good thing.
  Fri. 2/12/16 2:05pm Dean:

The Valentine's Day tribute portion of the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 2:07pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 2:11pm listener james from westwood:

Always here for a blast from the 30s and 40s. I still miss the 1940s channel I had on the rental car satellite radio last year.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 2:14pm coelacanth:

i missed whatever led to a comment about instrumentals on the radio, but i've been listening to "hocus pocus" A LOT lately.
...unbelievable how good that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 2:14pm Mike East:

Jon Lane is the name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 2:15pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 2:17pm Jeff Golick:

Am in and out, UM, but in enough now to say hallo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 2:17pm Uncle Michael:

hallo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 2:17pm Parq:

Coala -- if I recall correctly (and that's a big if), Hocus Pocus and Frankenstein were on the charts more or less simultaneously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 2:19pm coelacanth:

same era,in any case...Frankenstein, another Astoundingly perfect arrangement.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 2:20pm Matt in Nebraska:

One of my favorite Garnet Mimms songs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 2:20pm Mike East:

@UM - I think when he was there he was probably IN bands as a drummer. I'll axe him what they were called.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 2:20pm Uncle Michael:

Happy birthday, Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 2:22pm coelacanth:

my older brother had those 45s. (which i possess now) -then i ultimately got the albums...but "hocus pocus II"(the flip) is not on the album! so i'm happy to have both.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 2:22pm Parq:

"Jeeyost"?
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 2:23pm Matt in Nebraska:

Thanks Uncle Michael. It's a good day to have a birthday. Especially for a Lincolnite.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 2:31pm chromaphone:

Wish the Playboys had more albums. And the first one is so much better than Dose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 2:32pm Uncle Michael:

What's happening in Lincoln?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 2:32pm Uncle Michael:

I agree, chromaphone.
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 2:33pm chromaphone:

Their first album is sitting in my car right now :)

See ya Coelacanth! thanks!
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 2:41pm Matt in Nebraska:

It might be sort of pathetic but listening to Hinky Dinky Time is actually my form of spending it w/ friends. Probably the most fun I will have all day. I can listen to music and the news at work so it's really not so bad.
  Fri. 2/12/16 2:43pm rf:

clarinets... hopefully it's not a song about clubbing baby seals... but maybe it's about a ghost woman...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 2:45pm northguineahills:

Gotta run, thanks UM! Your tunes amped me up in this Fridaysical chilly atmosphere. Salud!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 2:46pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks NGH!

Matt...it's a lot like that for me too...so we can be sort of pathetic together.

clarinets...check!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 2:47pm Artie Haywire:

There's absolutely a community here. That's not pathetic, it's kinda great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 2:48pm Uncle Michael:

Absolutely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/12/16 2:48pm Artie Haywire:

The Who sounding almost like a proto-Childish band here. Almost.
  Fri. 2/12/16 2:49pm rf:

easy to please
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 2:50pm Uncle Michael:

you've come to the right place
Avatar Fri. 2/12/16 2:51pm Jeff Golick:

Yah: community!
Yah: the Who vocals there were not so Who-ish, somehow?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 2:53pm Uncle Michael:

Roger didn't do a lot in that register, I think. I'd love to hear Pete's demo for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/12/16 2:54pm doctorjazz:

Been enjoying the tunes, almost done, :(
see you next week.
