Avatar    Thu. 2/11/16 9:31am Polyus:

This is probably of no interest to anyone outside the Twin Cities area, but Will Oldham is going to be participating in a really cool event called Drone Not Drones on the 26th-27th. A 28-hour uninterrupted drone featuring dozens of performers, raising money for Doctors Without Borders. I think Will is scheduled for Friday night sometime, haven't seen the final list yet.

DreamCricket, chilllll ooouuuut maaaaaan. Don't you have any emergency Xanax you could take?

Cliff, no. I used to.
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 9:44am Cecile:

On a pleasant note, I was in a terrible mood because I could not for the life of me think of what to do for my interactive presentation for InDesign. Then Ronnie James Dio came to me in a dream. And then I knew. I do not shit you. This is going to be so fun to put together.

Morning Chris and all.

Tim Hecker is so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 9:47am Cliff:

Sorry DreamCricket, I was just kidding before about having any Xanax. But I hear you can get Etizolam online pretty easily, you don't even need a prescription in the US cuz it's unscheduled here.
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 9:47am Dave in Vermont:

great show so far, I wish I could stick around

Good Morning Freeform Family...Cold this morning on Right Coast(East)!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 9:53am Cliff:

It only has a 3-hour half-life, so if you start popping it daily and then want to quit you're basically in withdrawals every day. Just giving you a heads-up DreamCricket!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/11/16 9:54am Goyim in the AM:

It's a good show today -- it usually is -- but you lost a listener today, Chris. Hope you feel better. Bye.
  Thu. 2/11/16 9:55am SeanG:

good riddance
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 9:56am Cliff:

Yeah, go away, Goyim in the AM, nobody wanted you here anyway you punk. You don't even know your metal subgenres for shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/11/16 9:56am DreamCricket:

I've kicked worse Cliff. But good looks!
Avatar    Thu. 2/11/16 9:56am Wild Neil:

What was THAT all about??
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 9:57am Cliff:

Ok then, good luck DreamCricket!
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 9:57am Cecile:

Please don't pile on Goyim. Chris is in a bad mood. That doesn't mean everyone else has to be.
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 9:58am Cecile:

You don't have to summon an army to defend Chris. He said his piece. Goyim said his. They're moving to opposite corners of the ring, leave them be.
  Thu. 2/11/16 9:58am Flynn:

Few years back I went to this drone festival called drone activity in progress over in NYC definitely one of the most insane nights I have ever had
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 9:58am Cliff:

Oh nothing Wild Neil, just talking about benzos and casual threats of violence because somebody can't tell their grindcore from their sludge metal.
Avatar    Thu. 2/11/16 10:01am Polyus:

Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour must have been a whole lot of fun to be on.
Avatar    Thu. 2/11/16 10:03am Wild Neil:

  Thu. 2/11/16 10:05am P-90:

Everything OK, Chris?
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 10:06am Chris M.:

sometimes bands find their music on wfmu archives and may possibly look at your comments. i'm playing their music on the air because it's good music. but genuinely nobody wants to read your negative comments here. save it for your blog.

what in the name of fuck is going on with you folks today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 10:08am Cliff:

Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 10:10am Marcel M:

@Fekner: Did you mean to tweet that? haha.
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 10:10am Cecile:

Chris. I appreciate you advocating for the bands, but I'm sure that they know that the comments board doesn't reflect your opinion. It's all good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 10:11am Cliff:

Yeah, get yer social media straight, fekner!
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 10:12am Cecile:

Cliff, calm down.
Avatar    Thu. 2/11/16 10:13am Wild Neil:

@Chris-I will keep it positive comments about the music only for that very good reason. I don't want to bum any musicians out...music has done so much to make my life brighter and better I don't want to harm that process...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 10:18am Cliff:

Cecile, this IS me being calm. As I mentioned before, I'm all benzo-ed up this morning.

Maybe they have some magic plugin that automatically tweets their WFMU comments.
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 10:24am Cecile:

Merton was a kind of a badass. He combined Catholic theology with eastern religious practices and changed the game.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/11/16 10:26am Greg from ZONE 5:

@Marcel: I'm just trying to process this by saying it out loud.
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 10:30am Chris from DC:

Well said about recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/11/16 10:30am Lewis:

John Lee Hooker says some things along these lines on the Hooker and Heat album talking bout value of giving it all (sort of...)

It's like keeping a sketchbook. The tape recorder is a sketchbook for musicians.
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 10:31am Chris M.:

@Greg from ZONE 5: i'm talking to Will Oldham about Jackass 3D
  Thu. 2/11/16 10:33am Polyus:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 10:47am Cliff:

In fact, I eventually gave up on finding a teacher altogether, and now I just meditate on my own every night. It's a lot easier to deal with only my own shit, and not have to also deal with somebody else's creepy authoritarian bullshit.

My kid had a hard time listening to Beatles' white album on CD. I reminded him it was originally a double album - you didn't listent to the whole thing, you just put on the side you felt like hearing.

I like that the AC/DC reissue CDs have a long pause at the end of the original side ending songs on their albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 10:51am Cliff:

That's interesting bill, I've had similar problems listening to the White Album all the way through on CD.
  Thu. 2/11/16 10:53am bill:

Cecile, that is a heartwarming nugget of information, thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 10:53am Cliff:

Yeah, I usually regret giving away my CDs. Can't imagine getting rid of the whole collection at once, wow.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/11/16 11:17am coelacanth:

i know little about what's out there now. i'm using a techniques tt from c.1980; but i wouldn't suggest getting a vintage turntable unless you know you can get or make parts for it.
Avatar    Thu. 2/11/16 11:18am Wild Neil:

The advice I used to hear is if you have a low budget get direct drive, if TONS of money belt drive. That may have changed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:19am Cliff:

Dual CS 5000's go for about $500 on eBay, a little outta my price range! :)
  Thu. 2/11/16 11:19am Polyus:

I have an 80s Technics 1200. Built like a tank, drop it out a second floor window and it will probably still work.

AND I do not know if variable pitch is really needed, although it used to be useful for "import records of live performances" which might have been recorded too slow or fast.
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 11:20am Chris from DC:

I got a decent belt-driven Audio Tecnica for $100. My old Kenwood lasted forever.
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 11:22am Cecile:

Neil, I would say you don't need variable pitch unless you're DJing professionally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:24am Cliff:

Hmmm, I see on Amazon an Audio-Technica AT-LP60 for $89.99, belt drive and has a USB output. Sounds more like what I'm looking for
  Thu. 2/11/16 11:24am P-90:

@Wild Neil: pitch adustment (really speed adjustment) is important because household AC voltage varies enough to cause audible shifts in pitch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/11/16 11:24am coelacanth:

records WERE,at least, mastered at close to the correct speed usually - as opposed to cd reissues.
  Thu. 2/11/16 11:25am Polyus:

That is pretty much all you need, Cliff. Unless you wanna go down the audiophile rabbit hole, but that will just drive you nuts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:26am Cliff:

What's the difference between direct drive and belt drive? Imma a total noob
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:27am Cliff:

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of Polyus, "the audiophile rabbit hole", I've been there with headphones
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:28am Ken From Hyde Park:

New candidate of a band name: Gravity Waves Goodbye!
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 11:28am Cecile:

Belt drive you adjust the belt to change speed. Direct drive you use a switch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:29am Ken From Hyde Park:

Bluh..for a band name.
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 11:29am Cecile:

and by adjust the belt, at least with the old AR ones, you physically change the setting of the belt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/11/16 11:29am coelacanth:

i like pitch control. semi-automatic is good.(so it lifts off the record at the end. i don't care if it returns to the resting spot.) it needs an easy-to-use anti-skate and counter-balance...that's about it.
DO NOT get a "record changer".
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:30am Cliff:

What makes one better than the other?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:32am Cliff:

(Belt-drive vs. direct-drive I mean)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/11/16 11:32am coelacanth:

i originally (as a teen) bought a belt-driven dual. i figured if i wrecked something by dragging the platter down with the discwasher, i'd rather replace a belt than a motor...but that never happened.
  Thu. 2/11/16 11:33am bill:

remember some double album sides were ordered to be plopped onto a record changer (1-3, 2-4)? good times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/11/16 11:34am coelacanth:

i have a direct-drive now and it will never be damaged by using a discwasher. it's very strong (as Polyus @11:19 said)
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 11:35am Cecile:

Belt drives are quieter. Direct drives are easier to deal with. It's mostly a matter of taste IMO. I liked my old belt drive, but when I got it, it got hard to find replacement belts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/11/16 11:35am Lewis:

@bill - it went 1-4 2-3... I have a few of those in the archives...
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 11:37am Cecile:

Lewis, exactly. And as people started treating their record better, it was 1-2, 3-4.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/11/16 11:37am Lewis:

I augment the belt by driving with my finger on the inner ring of the disk... I also clean on a soft cloth on my work table before going onto the platter. but i am fussy geek who can get grumpy...
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 11:37am βrian:

Ah, but what could be more authentic and charming than the sound of discs dropping onto the platter? Loves me my 400-pound stereophonic entertainment center, btw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:37am Cliff:

Is it useful to get one that plays 78 RPM, or is 33-1/13 and 45 good enough?
  Thu. 2/11/16 11:38am bill:

lewis by jove youre right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/11/16 11:38am coelacanth:

i remember my father stacking 6 albums when i was little! i imagine they might still be listenable now if he hadn't done that.
(but he didn't clean his records before each play, so maybe not.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:39am Cliff:

78 RPMs are pretty much only vintage records, right?
  Thu. 2/11/16 11:40am Polyus:

@Brian - those are kind of a thing again. I even know a guy who fixes them up and retrofits them with a jack for your mp3 player.
Avatar Thu. 2/11/16 11:40am βrian:

Nothing lasts forever. Why get fussy? Soon enough we'll all be repurposed as shingles on a chicken coop.
  Thu. 2/11/16 11:40am bill:

cliff, though vinyl and cassettes are all the rage these days, I haven't heard of anybody making new 78s
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/11/16 11:40am coelacanth:

Lewis, i had to do that with my belt-drives. not with the direct-drive. (although a cheap dd might be stopped by it)
  Thu. 2/11/16 11:40am SeanG:

NICE

HAHA. I was like "Please be Sahm…"
Avatar    Thu. 2/11/16 11:41am Wild Neil:

@Cliff yeah, vintage. Belt drive uses a rubber belt and small pulley to drive the platter. Direct drive has a motor co-axial with the platter. Hence "direct", no belt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:41am Cliff:

Ok, that'll save me a hundred bucks then :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:43am doctorjazz:

doctorjazz, you might want to skip the beginning if you're sensitive to violence and drug abuse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:45am doctorjazz:

I see the discussion has been a lot about vinyl/turntables, as a certified audiophile lunatic, I'll put in my $0.02...most of the people who are nuts for sound quality will tell you belt drive is best (not all, but most)
     Thu. 2/11/16 11:46am Listener Robert:

What'd we do THIS time to deserve this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:46am doctorjazz:

Rega makes some turntables that, while a bit more expensive than mass market, are not too expensive, and are supposed to be really good sounding. There are others if anyone is interested.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:47am doctorjazz:

Sorry, I'll stop now (you are at fault for getting me going...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 2/11/16 11:48am Cliff:

I haven't listened to the Audio Technica stuff so it's hard to say anything definitive (they make great headphones, for instance), and I'm sure the AT will do fine, but I'd lean Rega (but, take this as coming from someone that has spend ridiculous amounts of money on gear).

     Thu. 2/11/16 11:52am Listener Robert:

I went w my friend Nancy (who's in the antiques biz) over a decade ago junk shopping at someone's house. She asked my advice at buying a turntable that was $10, I said, "How could you go wrong?" so she did. We got it to her home. It turned out to be belt-driven, and appeared just to need the belt tightened or replaced, but her boyfriend I think convinced her to throw it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/11/16 11:52am coelacanth:

AT makes decent cartridges, but over-priced.
...and when i contacted them with a "technical" question about a mic cable, they gave me a line of horse shit.

AT makes a belt drive turntable that also features a USB setup for about $150.
