This is probably of no interest to anyone outside the Twin Cities area, but Will Oldham is going to be participating in a really cool event called Drone Not Drones on the 26th-27th. A 28-hour uninterrupted drone featuring dozens of performers, raising money for Doctors Without Borders. I think Will is scheduled for Friday night sometime, haven't seen the final list yet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am

i know little about what's out there now. i'm using a techniques tt from c.1980; but i wouldn't suggest getting a vintage turntable unless you know you can get or make parts for it.
Avatar 11:18am
Wild Neil:

The advice I used to hear is if you have a low budget get direct drive, if TONS of money belt drive. That may have changed.
  11:19am
Cliff:

Dual CS 5000's go for about $500 on eBay, a little outta my price range! :)
  11:19am
Polyus:

I have an 80s Technics 1200. Built like a tank, drop it out a second floor window and it will probably still work.
Avatar 11:19am
Wild Neil:

AND I do not know if variable pitch is really needed, although it used to be useful for "import records of live performances" which might have been recorded too slow or fast.
Avatar 11:20am
Chris from DC:

I got a decent belt-driven Audio Tecnica for $100. My old Kenwood lasted forever.
Avatar 11:22am
Cecile:

Neil, I would say you don't need variable pitch unless you're DJing professionally.
  11:24am
Cliff:

Hmmm, I see on Amazon an Audio-Technica AT-LP60 for $89.99, belt drive and has a USB output. Sounds more like what I'm looking for
  11:24am
P-90:

@Wild Neil: pitch adustment (really speed adjustment) is important because household AC voltage varies enough to cause audible shifts in pitch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
coelacanth:

records WERE,at least, mastered at close to the correct speed usually - as opposed to cd reissues.
  11:25am
Polyus:

That is pretty much all you need, Cliff. Unless you wanna go down the audiophile rabbit hole, but that will just drive you nuts.
  11:26am
Cliff:

What's the difference between direct drive and belt drive? Imma a total noob
  11:27am

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of Polyus, "the audiophile rabbit hole", I've been there with headphones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am
Ken From Hyde Park:

New candidate of a band name: Gravity Waves Goodbye!
Avatar 11:28am
Cecile:

Belt drive you adjust the belt to change speed. Direct drive you use a switch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Bluh..for a band name.
Avatar 11:29am
Cecile:

and by adjust the belt, at least with the old AR ones, you physically change the setting of the belt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am
coelacanth:

i like pitch control. semi-automatic is good.(so it lifts off the record at the end. i don't care if it returns to the resting spot.) it needs an easy-to-use anti-skate and counter-balance...that's about it.
DO NOT get a "record changer".
  11:30am
Cliff:

What makes one better than the other?
  11:32am
Cliff:

(Belt-drive vs. direct-drive I mean)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am
coelacanth:

i originally (as a teen) bought a belt-driven dual. i figured if i wrecked something by dragging the platter down with the discwasher, i'd rather replace a belt than a motor...but that never happened.
  11:33am
bill:

remember some double album sides were ordered to be plopped onto a record changer (1-3, 2-4)? good times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am
coelacanth:

i have a direct-drive now and it will never be damaged by using a discwasher. it's very strong (as Polyus @11:19 said)
Avatar 11:35am
Cecile:

Belt drives are quieter. Direct drives are easier to deal with. It's mostly a matter of taste IMO. I liked my old belt drive, but when I got it, it got hard to find replacement belts.
Avatar 11:35am
Lewis:

@bill - it went 1-4 2-3... I have a few of those in the archives...
Avatar 11:37am
Cecile:

Lewis, exactly. And as people started treating their record better, it was 1-2, 3-4.
Avatar 11:37am
Lewis:

I augment the belt by driving with my finger on the inner ring of the disk... I also clean on a soft cloth on my work table before going onto the platter. but i am fussy geek who can get grumpy...
Avatar 11:37am
βrian:

Ah, but what could be more authentic and charming than the sound of discs dropping onto the platter? Loves me my 400-pound stereophonic entertainment center, btw.
  11:37am
Cliff:

Is it useful to get one that plays 78 RPM, or is 33-1/13 and 45 good enough?
  11:38am
bill:

lewis by jove youre right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am
coelacanth:

i remember my father stacking 6 albums when i was little! i imagine they might still be listenable now if he hadn't done that.
(but he didn't clean his records before each play, so maybe not.)

Cliff:

78 RPMs are pretty much only vintage records, right?
  11:40am
Polyus:

@Brian - those are kind of a thing again. I even know a guy who fixes them up and retrofits them with a jack for your mp3 player.

@Cliff yeah, vintage. Belt drive uses a rubber belt and small pulley to drive the platter. Direct drive has a motor co-axial with the platter. Hence "direct", no belt.

I see the discussion has been a lot about vinyl/turntables, as a certified audiophile lunatic, I'll put in my $0.02...most of the people who are nuts for sound quality will tell you belt drive is best (not all, but most)
  11:46am
Listener Robert:

What'd we do THIS time to deserve this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am
doctorjazz:

Rega makes some turntables that, while a bit more expensive than mass market, are not too expensive, and are supposed to be really good sounding. There are others if anyone is interested.

I haven't listened to the Audio Technica stuff so it's hard to say anything definitive (they make great headphones, for instance), and I'm sure the AT will do fine, but I'd lean Rega (but, take this as coming from someone that has spend ridiculous amounts of money on gear).

I went w my friend Nancy (who's in the antiques biz) over a decade ago junk shopping at someone's house. She asked my advice at buying a turntable that was $10, I said, "How could you go wrong?" so she did. We got it to her home. It turned out to be belt-driven, and appeared just to need the belt tightened or replaced, but her boyfriend I think convinced her to throw it out.

AT makes decent cartridges, but over-priced.
