Never knew Maurice White drummed on Summertime, that's awesome
  12:33pm

The best version of "Summertime" hands down!!! So happy to hear this. Thanks Duane!

Hey ho all...digging the show, Duane!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm
JtotheK:

@djsheilab -- yep, i've heard that version of summertime before, too ... not sure if it's from an LP or comp... -- but i'm in the "I prefer the 45" camp. Drums feel louder...perhaps it's in my head...but also the 45 seems a bit faster, though maybe I pitch it up. *shoulder shrug*

recently had to come up with some gear to replicate the EWF video for "September" for a tv production. Really enjoyed watching it (great costumes, they look like they're having so much fun. Maurice White is electric). All these years I had no idea what they were saying in the chorus...turns out its just Ba-di-ya, which I assume are just nonsense rhythm syllables. Not far from what I had been singing to cover the fact that I didn't know what they were saying.

Long story short...there may be a TV show coming up that involves Earth Wind and Fire as characters

Wow, this is some seriously freaky stuff. I had no idea EW&F made music this far out! Wonderful, thank you Duane : )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

What are the best EW&F years to check out?
Avatar 1:29pm
Duane:

if you like this stuff, check out the first three EWF albums (71-74)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

(My guess would be '71-'74, which would apply for almost all artists who were active during those years, but correct me if i'm wrong...)

Now this is more like the EWF I know — a little cheesy. It's great to have heard so much new (to me) and excellent material.

@βrian Exactly. I'd only heard the cheese before.

near-same 70s to 80s arc as Kool and the Gang, and I love both groups all through the 80s too...and yes David Foster wrote After The Love Has Gone and that's loveable too
  1:39pm
Cliff:

I like cheese and I like funk, but I don't like funky cheese
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
JtotheK:

The self titled EWF album and the second EWF album (for WB) can be found on the vinyl comp 'Another Time'. The self titled LP used to be hard to find, not sure if that is still the case...
Avatar 1:40pm
βrian:

The question is, is it commodity cheese, or artisanal cheese?
  1:41pm
Cliff:

Depends....was the artisanal cheese made by some funky (as in unshowered) neckbeard?
  1:43pm
Polyus:

I just came across Another Time for the first time last week - was wondering what that was. The person browsing to my right grabbed it, so didn't get to look at the tracks.

In '94 I moved and started hanging out with a group of musicians in my new town (I was a drummer). One afternoon, I was dropping off this one guy and when we got to the parking lot of his squalid apartment building 'Shining Star' came on the radio. Of course, I cranked that shit to the max and jammed out like I always did. When the song was over I turned down the radio and looked at him, expecting him to be silent and removed as he was about most of what I was into and he said, "What the fuck was that?" He was a kid at the time. It blew him away.
