Options February 2, 2016: NFL Films Music (Super Bowl Edition)
Anyone who remembers the old NFL Films highlight shows ("NFL Game of the Week") will fondly remember the music of synth pioneer Sam Spence or KPM library music production composers Johnny Pearson, Syd Dale and Keith Mansfield. For most football fans, the music is etched into their memories. Nobody knew the names of the songs nor the composers but they surely recognized the music when they heard it. Tune into Morricone Island, your source for all things soundtrack, this Super Bowl week, as host Devon E. Levins' spins highlights of his favorite NFL Films Music records. Music that football fans and (non-football) soundtrack fans alike are guaranteed to all get behind.

Listener comments!

  Tue. 2/2/16 7:04pm Listener Robert:

So far I've known all these from memory.
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:04pm P-90:

Brilliant idea for a show! Hi Devon.
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:05pm chalmers:

It starts with a whistle and ends with a gun. This is terrific!
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:07pm Listener Robert:

Phil Spieller was the one who was usually credited on the screen. Publisher, maybe.
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:07pm P-90:

John Facenda! They parody his voice in commercials to this very day. Few remember his name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:07pm dale:

this stuff is good. crime jazz good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:08pm dale:

didn't the guy who started nfl films buy the rights to do it from the bfl for something dumb like 200 dollars?
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:09pm P-90:

Morricone meets Man from UNCLE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:09pm dale:

NOT the bfl....you know what i mean.
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:09pm bloopy:

hey devon do you know if Fred Karlin's score for The Stalking Moon has ever had a proper release on LP?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:10pm Cliff:

I think I've maybe only watched the end of one Super Bowl once, but despite that I'm really enjoying this show so far. :)
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:10pm JoelA:

Bart Starr TD behind right guard
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:12pm Listener Robert:

Yes, IIRC Ed Sabol locked up those rights for cheap. I'm sure AFL Films cost more once the AFL saw the value in NFL Films.
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:14pm Listener Robert:

Remember the brief independent existence of AFL Films? Made sense for them to merge, known for a brief time as NFL-AFL Films.
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:16pm chalmers:

Here's the "Lost Classics" segment on AFL Films

  Tue. 2/2/16 7:16pm Listener Robert:

Remember when the opening piece was used on a Simpson cartoon as background to the montage of scenes representing Mrs. Simpson's Mafia-controlled pretzel biz?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/2/16 7:19pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Kind of neat that to hear these in stereo since TV audio was in mono back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:20pm dale:

that last piece was on tommy boy? i wonder if monica gets a check for 2 cents now.
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:20pm Listener Robert:

Of course one thing that bothered me about their music is that a fair amount of the time they ripped themselves off -- boiler-plating motifs.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 7:21pm Devon E. Levins:

bloopy, only a promo release in 2002 from an Australian label that I know. Not sure how official or complete it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:21pm dale:

yeah, but the musicianship on all these cuts is really up there. fantastic session players.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This is Kewl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:22pm dale:

man of la mancha!
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:23pm bloopy:

Thanks, such a good score + film!!
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:24pm P-90:

Why NOT use an old Bolshevik fight song?
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:30pm Trev:

Such a great show.
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:30pm wilbur twinhorse:

Traumatic Brain Injury Bowl, truth in advertising.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:37pm dale:

this sounds like when the 6 million dollar man is trying to diffuse a bomb that's gonna kill oscar goldman
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:38pm wilbur twinhorse:

Sorry about the oxymoron there folks! The music? ok, a pastiche at best though.
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:38pm Listener Robert:

Now we're into territory unfamiliar to me.
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:39pm P-90:

@Ken from Pyde Hark: good point, many of us have heard these before, but always only in mono.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:40pm dale:

damn, this stuff is ggod. i wish lulu were singing with it.
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:40pm Listener Robert:

Back to familiar ground. CBS used it for a while to introduce their NFL telecasts, but later for tennis, which made much more sense: "Back and forth, and forth and back, doo-doo doo-doo...."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:43pm dale:

i just googled mansfield and his mentor wrote a eurovision winner for lulu - holy crap!
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:49pm P-90:

Part of the fun of Facenda's narration was always how hysterically pretentious the writing was. And he made the most of it.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 7:50pm Devon E. Levins:

...rather proof that the NFL has brought the world something more than just traumatic brain injuries
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:52pm dale:

i guess mike oldfield never heard this.
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:53pm P-90:

OMG I remember this! Did this "Tubular Bells"-like thing precede the actual Oldfield "Tubular Bells"?
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 7:53pm Devon E. Levins:

yeah some of this stuff is dangerously close to the "inspiration"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:53pm cory:

how many mics are they using on those tom-toms?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:54pm cory:

tubular bells released in 73
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 7:55pm Devon E. Levins:

no its 1975. TB is 1973...
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:55pm wilbur twinhorse:

twenty +/- i reckon.
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:55pm P-90:

Thnx Cory
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:56pm cory:

sounds about right wilbur
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/2/16 7:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I like the part when Facenda described Harvey Martin and Randy White picking the pocket of a Denver player in SB XII. Thanks for the Super Bowl program, Devon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:57pm cory:

thanks for the awesome show devon!!
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 7:57pm Devon E. Levins:

I've read that Christian Vander claims Oldfield "inspiration" for Tubular Bells came from an earlier Magma song
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:57pm wilbur twinhorse:

thanks man!, did any of these commenters actually play the game?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:58pm dale:

was i in the nfl? no.
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:58pm mrmucho:

terrific show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 7:59pm Cliff:

Thanks Devon, loved the show
  Tue. 2/2/16 7:59pm P-90:

Thank you, Devon! Great job always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 8:00pm dale:

fantastic show, mr. deejay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 2/2/16 8:02pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Oy, just the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl and then nothing again until August.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 2/4/16 11:00am Cecile:

Hurrah! I can finally listen to this!
