The manic collage-y nature of this Chadbourne tape makes it tough to do blow-by-blow tracklisting, so I'm wimping out -- but you can follow along here, should you wish: www.discogs.com...

I am 100% here for manic collages.
  Tue. 2/2/16 12:12pm Dean:

History's weird. Agnew was alive and (as) well (as can be) in '85, didn't die until '96. For some reason I imagined him long gone by the time of this tribute.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 12:13pm Tony Coulter:

Today's mystery under-the-cassettes LP is hardly a mystery if you've ever seen it -- it's this thing, by the great British band Blah Blah Blah: www.discogs.com...

So, the cover of this Chadbourne cassette (seen on the left in the photo above the playlist) is a paper pouch that you drop the cassette into, from the top.

And hi Tony ...
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Carmichael! Sorry for the frustration -- which I share....
  Tue. 2/2/16 12:22pm Dean:

Get with the program, Carmichael. This is the wave of the future! Now, everybody kneel and pay homage to our lord and savior, Sir Tim Berners-Lee. He woulda kicked Gutenberg's ass.
  Tue. 2/2/16 12:23pm Mark Williams:

he just mixed in some Prince Far I dub during this "rugged sports" bit. Ha.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

Hi, Mark! I was wondering what that was!!
  Tue. 2/2/16 12:24pm Mark Williams:

hey Tony. Sorry for the long absence. Work... yeah it's from Cry Tuff 3. Steve Beresford played on portions of that, interestingly enough.
  Tue. 2/2/16 12:26pm Dean:

See the link to discogs Tony provides to this cassette, the image of the tape and the typed notes. There's reference to a "Mondale/Van Halen duo," "Elvis Presley, rap," etc.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 12:26pm βrian:

@Carmichael: This help?
  Tue. 2/2/16 12:28pm Mark Williams:

@Dean. Aha. So it's Presley who likes it rugged. Of course he did.

Ninth wonder of the world: Tony C.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 12:34pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Jeff! You must be the 8th wonder then, I guess....
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 12:36pm Jeff Golick:

Shit, I thought there were 8! You're 8 and your collection is 9, then.
  Tue. 2/2/16 12:41pm Dean:

That's why they're called "wonders." You're never certain how many there are.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 1:02pm Tony Coulter:

I wonders....
  Tue. 2/2/16 1:04pm Dean:

Lemme direct your attention to a post by a friend who ordinarily blogs about law and philosophy stuff. Here he takes an interesting detour: http://leiterreports.typepad.com/blog/2016/01/the-best-late-60searly-70s-rock-n-roll-album-youve-never-heard-of.html
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 1:10pm Tony Coulter:

Don't know that Universe -- tho I like the American band of the same name: rateyourmusic.com...
  Tue. 2/2/16 1:12pm Dean:

I don't know the latter, but "progressive rock" is compelling. In fact, the Polish Universe resembles a contemporaneous German prog band, Epitaph. Leiter is right, too, that they sound like early Tull. Weirdly, on the day before Leiter posted this I listened to "Stand Up" for the very first time in my life.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

A Costes/Chadbourne collaboration would be quite a thing to behear, methinks....
  Tue. 2/2/16 1:14pm Dean:

Behear now.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 1:16pm Tony Coulter:

"Stand Up" is my fave Tull album, I think.
  Tue. 2/2/16 1:18pm Dean:

Well, mine, too, inasmuch as it's the only one I've heard beginning to end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 1:19pm coelacanth:

Avatar    Tue. 2/2/16 1:31pm Chris from DC:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 1:35pm coelacanth:

hey Tony, how do you compare jethro tull's "this was" and "benefit" to "stand up"? This Was,together with Aqualung (even despite its overplayedness and commercial acceptance) are my 2 favorite 'tull albums; but i acquired stand up & benefit right as i was diving into punkrock, so they never got comparable attention.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 1:40pm Tony Coulter:

I like Benefit too -- probably my second favorite. I also like Aqualung, but the radio overplay does get in the way.... "This Was" I haven't heard in years.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 1:44pm Tony Coulter:

I wonder if Chadbourne has ever covered any Jethro Tull numbers....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 1:49pm coelacanth:

thanks! benefit and this was are here. 'give 'em a spin later. (stand up in storage, not in alphabetical order)...i remember loving "this was".
...did Chadbourne cover songs? i only caught the tail-end of that tape.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 1:50pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, there were some drive-by covers in there -- and on most of his albums.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 1:52pm Flash Strap:

Hi Tony! This is some wackadoo scene
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 1:53pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Flash Strap! Calmness and order will be restored with today's last tape (the Steve Roden one)
  Tue. 2/2/16 1:56pm Dean:

No love for "Thick As a Brick" or "Passion Play"? I don't know them, but I wonder...
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 1:58pm Tony Coulter:

Never warmed up to either -- but I'm open to the idea that one day they'll grab me.
  Tue. 2/2/16 1:58pm Dean:

In any event, listen to Universe. The last track, a 1970 acetate, includes a riff on one of Holst's "Planets."
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:00pm Tony Coulter:

Will do. Here be the other Universe: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 2:02pm coelacanth:

i like thick as a brick, but it's a big step down from aqualung,in my opinion; and each album to follow a step down from the previous one...then,for some reason, i like "songs from the wood"! it's very "pop" but the arrangements are excellent.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:02pm Tony Coulter:

So maybe this French side of the Costes tape is basically the same (text-wise) as side A, but with some twists here and there. Dunno....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 2:03pm coelacanth:

i'm getting that impression too.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:05pm listener james from westwood:

Wild stuff today and glad to have it; where else would I ever have heard these?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 2:05pm coelacanth:

(...actually Dean, "passion play" is as good as "...brick".)
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:06pm Jeff Golick:

I peeked ahead at today's assignment, and found this Roden (about whom I know nothing) interview: bombmagazine.org... Very enlightening!
Avatar    Tue. 2/2/16 2:06pm Guido from Cologne:

Hello Tony!
Sound Of Pig ... Al Margolis ... you know him in person, right?
I have this Blah Blah Blah, also the golden record.
Any idea who this is?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 2:07pm coelacanth:

i recognise all 3 of these names, but i don't know where from.
  Tue. 2/2/16 2:08pm Dean:

It would help if Tull would produce a box set of early releases, maybe up to PP. I'd buy it, maybe. I'm loving the Hawkwind set of early stuff through "Hall of the Mountain Grill." It includes the Greasy Truckers Party material, which I once had on vinyl, but no more.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:08pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks for that link, Jeff! My impression is that Roden is better known in the "art" world than in the music world....
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:09pm Jeff Golick:

This was my sole Tull jam: en.wikipedia.org... - total neophyte.

My first radio cohost - at my college radio station - was named Ian Anderson. This *still* makes me giggle a little, because I am 6.
Avatar    Tue. 2/2/16 2:09pm Guido from Cologne:

Ah, just found:
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:10pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Guido! Yes, Al Margolis is a good and old friend....
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:10pm Rich in Washington:

Dammit! I missed the Chadbourne! And it's a tape I don't have!
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:11pm Flash Strap:

Enjoyed the anarchy of Costes but this restoration of order is utopian
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Rich! Wish these shows could be archived....
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:12pm Rich in Washington:

It's kinda magic that they're not, but my schedule makes listening to shows random and difficult these days.
Avatar    Tue. 2/2/16 2:14pm Guido from Cologne:

If Sound Of Pig did not release Amy Denio's tapes, I never would have been introduced to one one of my most favorite ever performers. Unbelievabe, Amy says those "cheesy" tape releases kind of hepled to kick her profesional career.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:16pm Tony Coulter:

For some stupid reason, I didn't keep my Amy Denio tapes, much as I like her -- wish I had. Some of that stuff was reissued on CD, though....
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:17pm Rich in Washington:

I think Amy's put a lot of her stuff on BandCamp, if that's yr cup o' tea....
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:19pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Ya know, it kind of isn't. Not because I'm a format snob, but simply because I tend to lose track of my digital-only music. I need tangible packaging for something to make an impression on my poor brain.
Avatar    Tue. 2/2/16 2:20pm Guido from Cologne:

The CD reissues are definetely top-notch sound-wise.
Guess the original reel-to-reel masters must have been pretty good already.
Just the artwork sufferes.
Yes, on Bandcamp she returs to her old multi-track-way-of working from the 80ies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 2:21pm JtotheK:

this tape is quite relaxing.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:22pm Tony Coulter:

I figgered we all needed to calm down....
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:25pm Kay:

I missed the Chadbourne for a meeting. Hope you can rerun the show someday like you've done for some Tape Hiss shows.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:26pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Kay. Yep, I will definitely consider rerunning this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 2:32pm JtotheK:

that's the great thing about TV dinners - whatever isn't finished are not leftovers -- they are RERUNS!!! /krusty the clown joke...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 2:34pm northguineahills:

I gotta to run in a sec, but I've been here since the beginning of Steve Roden, haven't heard his earlier stuff, very nice!
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:36pm Tony Coulter:

Hello (and goodbye too), NGH! I haven't heard his later stuff, so we're even.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:45pm Jeff Golick:

Which tape cover is the Roden, Tony?
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:47pm Tony Coulter:

@ Jeff: The gold and off-white one in the lower righthand corner.....
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:49pm Jeff Golick:

Avatar    Tue. 2/2/16 2:49pm V Priceless:

thanx TC!
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:51pm Tony Coulter:

Jeez, I'm an idiot. Picked up the Roden tape just now, and of course, wouldn't you know it, the title is actually "The Secret of Happiness." Sorry for the brain fart.....
  Tue. 2/2/16 2:52pm Dean:

Do tell. What is that secret?
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:53pm Tony Coulter:

He just told us -- but I was too busy pursuing it to notice.
  Tue. 2/2/16 2:54pm Dean:

Maybe it's a breath mint. You know, the sucret of happiness.
Avatar Tue. 2/2/16 2:55pm Tony Coulter:

And, one more correction to add to the ever-expanding list of corrections: Turns out Jesse is out today. Kurt Gottschalk will be filling in -- don't miss it!
  Tue. 2/2/16 2:55pm Dean:

Immediately following the close of this program I'm hitting Play on that 1977 Universe record...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/2/16 2:56pm JtotheK:

enjoyed the show, thanks Tony!
