Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

UM, referring to Doug's gif, my friend, Toshio Kajiwara, used to design turntables w/ multiple arms and descending contacting mics w/ records w/ pieces of tape and rubber bands on it to create beats. I used to use a half dozen turntables w/ records w/ tape, and cuts made w/ exacto knifes on records. I only did it a few times, b/c, damn, needles are expensive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/15/16 12:10pm Uncle Michael:

@Brian in UK: Yes, he did, with Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra. Really needs to be played during one of these tributes.

Hi Henry. Hey there Rev.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/15/16 12:22pm Parq:

I'll say it again -- FMU has never been more essential than it's been this week. The sum total of the individual DJs' takes on the Duke's legacy has said more about him, provided more insight into him and honored him more than all the overwrought spilled ink (and its web equivalent) put together.
  Fri. 1/15/16 12:25pm Dean:

@Brian in UK: Was that the Jack Lancaster effort, with Phil Collins et al.? What a cool record that was! Also, Lancaster and Lumley's Moonscape.

Yep, @Brian in UK, the same JL. Very cool that you saw Blodwyn Pig. I had the "Peter & the Wolf" record, as well as "Moonscape," mostly because I was a Phil Collins/Brand X fan. Had.

When Zappa dies I thot he was too young & knew would miss his voice socio-politically. When LouReed died - I was wistful & felt the pang that the ProtoUnderground King had passed w/ the times - but somehow w/ Bowie I've felt gutted for a week like the world has changed somehow. Weird really. ...I mean - I didn't cry over LouReed.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/15/16 1:00pm Parq:

I dunno about cute, but listener Parq is definitely stout.
  Fri. 1/15/16 1:00pm Dean:

The characteristics I like about Ferry are pretty much the ones I didn't like when first I heard/saw him. He effected a caricature of suaveness, a mannerism not befitting rock music. But then it did fit, or I grew not to care that it didn't. How else should one sing "Love Is the Drug" or "Out of the Blue"? For me, "Like a Hurricane" only really works as a Roxy Music performance. The simile is so, pardon the pun, overblown. It takes a pose like Ferry's to make it work.

Meltzer's desired response a good percent of the time, RRN63.

Works the other way, too, UM. Donny Paycheck, drummer and chronic finger-giver for Zeke, is just a cool grandpa kinda guy. Brinsley Schwarz appeared to appreciate the "I've been a fan forever" offerings after a Graham Parker gig. Their job, perhaps, is to be human offstage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/15/16 1:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

One age group lived thru the Depression & WWII - I lived thru the Disco Years. Even then I knew some was just good Pop &/or Funk - but in the smalltown world it wasn't the Gays & People of Color & hard drug freaks who were Disco People - & it was the Jocks & yer Dad wanting to be Travolta, see. All the Live venues went GlitterBall - wall-to-wall on *all* the airwaves - & this was for years & years & years it seemed. Where & when I was situated - the Punk Revolution seemed the inevitable reaction to this (& YachtRock & JourneyStyxForeignerKansasEaglesReoSpeedwagon) - far more than a reaction to Prog as it's usually realted. So - if Disco stylistically disappeared up believing its' own Press - it's its' own fault
...But of course dismissing a whole Genre out of hand is an abdication.
...I'll Copy & Save that for next time the Disco Question comes up maybe...

I like Ferry just fine, to be clear. He does Ferry real well.

Thanks Uncle Michael. That one does not have the part about anyone shouting to have it released first.

Hmm...keep googling.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/15/16 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Patrick...I don't know what to think other than that Pat's was probably not as much of a tourist trap in '56-'60.
  Fri. 1/15/16 1:49pm Djelñoño:

Jim's Steaks is much better than either South Philly legends plus Pat (who is dead tG) was a racist who Trump would've loved.

I appreciate these insights.
  Fri. 1/15/16 1:51pm Dean:

March 1, 1984, issue of Musician magazine, pp. 82 & 90 feature an interview w/ Alomar, "Who the Hell is Carlos Alomar?" The interview ends with discussion of the "Fame" riff. "'Fame' definitely came first," is Alomar's take. He goes on to suggest Bowie would have sued had Brown's version hit. But nothing about how Brown got the lick in the first place.

  Fri. 1/15/16 2:07pm Dean:

Which explains why "Metal Machine Music," the last side in particular, was so (if you'll pardon the pun) revolutionary.

I can indeed see how this would've wigged out 1979 me. Hell, hearing the "The Wall" in full freaked me out a bit in 1980 or so.

Not very scary, could be minimalist classical, Glass
(think the persona, with the masks and stuff colored how they were perceived).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/15/16 2:45pm Uncle Michael:

That's not the creepiest bit on Eskimo. I'm not sure I'd find any of it creepy or scary today.

A creepy cartoon - but a cartoon. (Always Humor in the Residents.) If I heard on the radio (not likely) in 1979 - I would've perked up & waited for the back-announce, that's for sure.
  Fri. 1/15/16 2:50pm Dean:

Ironically, some of the creepiest Residents stuff is on The Commercial Album. That and "Sinister Exaggerator."

I've only just remembered that Barclay James Harvest has a song ("Titles"?) with lyrics made up of titles of rock songs, including "Aladdin Sane," etc.
