Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 11:31am Tony Coulter:

Hello all. Won't be doing a David Bowie tribute today, as so many FMU DJs have already beaten me to it, and done it more than admirably. However, Mr. Jones is in my thoughts and his music will be in many of my shows to come.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:00pm βrian:

I've slipped past the vapor barrier and am settling in.

Hola, βrian!
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:02pm V Priceless:

Hey Tony - DB 4evah! Still reeling here...gonna be a while before the sting of this loss fades

Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Children Medieval Band (on now and in the pic above the playlist) are a Romanian-American trio aged 9, 12, and 13.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:03pm glenn:

gaaaahhhhh. they look like young republicans. or the children of the corn.
  Tue. 1/12/16 12:03pm Dean:

These kids are respecting authentic early music performance practices. Silvertone guitars were widely used by the troubadours.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:03pm listener james from westwood:

Howdy, Tony and all! Sometimes it's good to take a break from such immersion, as excellent as the music may be. Needed to do that with Lou Reed in '13.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:05pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, V Priceless, Holland Oats, Glenn, Dean, and Listener James!

I probably will do a Bowie tribute at some point -- just not yet. His death was most def a shock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/12/16 12:07pm JtotheK:

hi everybody.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, JtotheK!
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:07pm Cecile:

you know what I haven't heard in general? I haven't heard Jean Genie.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Cecile!
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:08pm Cecile:

hola, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:09pm glenn:

i had a silvertone, like this, except in blonde finish. www.scottysvintageguitars.com...
it was a great guitar, and i wish i still had it.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:09pm Cecile:

Well, I have to say that Joe Belock's passion and heavy sampling of Scary Monsters got me to actually download it. And I forgot how much I liked the songs I liked on it, if that makes any sense.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

The 9-year-old in CMB is the drummer, by the way.
  Tue. 1/12/16 12:10pm Dean:

Coulda sworn it was Purdie.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:11pm Cecile:

I have a question. What is the more psychedelic and trippy music made by stone cold sober people?
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:11pm Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: I keep on discovering new Bowie albums to like. I started with Low and kept on expanding from there.
  Tue. 1/12/16 12:12pm Dean:

Hot damn, Angel! One of the two loudest concerts ever!
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:13pm Cecile:

I think as he got older, the swirls of hate tons of US rock critics, writers and fans had generated in the 70s and 80s started to thin. And we got a better picture. I'm not going to say I'm a die-hard fan, but he has recorded a surprising number of songs I love.
  Tue. 1/12/16 12:14pm Dean:

June 29, 1976, I believe. Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Substantial hearing loss, I suspect.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:16pm Cecile:

this is quite lovely and not at all what I thought of Angel.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:16pm V Priceless:

Angel = real Mellotron, that's for sure
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: RE: psychedelic music made by sober people -- not sure, but there's plenty of "freaky" music made by non-stoners, from Beefheart to Sun Ra. Does that count?
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:17pm V Priceless:

Melvins are sober and they make some trippy stuff : )
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:18pm Cecile:

Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:19pm Cecile:

I'm trying to debunk a lot of myths about LSD. I'm starting to hear the usual BS from people about having to take drugs to be creative.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:21pm Cecile:

This doesn't sound like the Children's Medieval Band I found on YouTube.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:21pm βrian:

Just because you look through the window doesn't mean you can pass through the window.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:21pm Cecile:

Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

@ Cecile: This is their debut album, containing their own tunes. The youtube stuff is all covers, and some of it is from as long ago as four years -- when the drummer was five!
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:23pm βrian:

I kept hoping to hear the harp bridge.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:23pm Cecile:

ok, I'll listen harder.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:28pm V Priceless:

@ Cecile - reminds me of a silly piece of fan mail I wrote to Pere Ubu when "The Modern Dance" came out; I was curious to know if any of the music was the result of altered states of mind. DT wrote back with a definitive "no", and stated, in fact, that he had come to enjoy their music more since he stopped doing them! Ha!
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:28pm Cecile:

very cool, VP!
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:37pm βrian:

Hey, I read it's now legal for kids in the U.S. to walk to school. Who'd a thunk?
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 12:39pm V Priceless:

spuds, baby!

  Tue. 1/12/16 1:36pm Matt:

Cool cover. I never got the Vietnam overtones of this until I started to hear some L.Cohen bootlegs. He was not messin around.
  Tue. 1/12/16 1:37pm MrFab:

hey y'all!
Is it wrong to be mad at Bowie for not telling us he had cancer? What was he thinking? The news was like a sock in the gut.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Matt! Leonard Cohen certainly can get awfully dark -- industrial-music-level dark.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 1:40pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, MrFab. I kinda know what you're saying. On the other hand, I guess he didn't want to spend his remaining time with everyone focusing on his dying. I can understand and respect that.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 1:42pm holland oats:

when it's time to change...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/12/16 1:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Imagine you're Bowie - terminally ill. Would you tell the world you're dying, & put up w/ all that?
Release your work about it, & amuse yourself w/ the reviews instead - fantastic.
...He declined being Knighted also. Righteous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/12/16 1:55pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& he was RICH. Didn't have to even spit on us, frankly.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 1:58pm βrian:

Hmm, sounds like Yup to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/12/16 1:58pm JtotheK:

cool tune. I also enjoy Dave Brubeck's take on it...
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 1:58pm V Priceless:

Emerson has some nice words for DB. No pun intended.
  Tue. 1/12/16 2:00pm LiverQuiver:

Wealthy enough for a liver transplant? Maybe decided times up?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/12/16 2:00pm Rick from SC:

Great show, Tony. Loved the Moondog track.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 2:00pm Tony Coulter:

I enjoy the "list" part of this equation. Certainly adds another dimension that went missing later on.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Rick! (Greetings, too.)
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 2:06pm Rich in Washington:

I think Bowie did the most Bowie thing with something as mundane to work with as death
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/12/16 2:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@LQ: Wealthy enuff for just about anything. He & McCartney were always neck & neck for richest Rawker - until Bono bought early Apple stock (non-musical wealth)...
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 2:08pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Rich! Agreed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/12/16 2:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Good one Rich.
...Purple puts me in mind of my beloved Captain Beyond. Rather good!
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 2:16pm V Priceless:

Bowie's come as close as any public figure in recorded history to pulling a genuine Lazarus, seems to me. To have that much control right up to the end? Beyond impressive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/12/16 2:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The final Bowie-ism. Seriously.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 2:20pm V Priceless:

yeah..he really turned his exit into art.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 2:39pm Rich in Washington:

I recently picked up a dog-eared copy of Meet The Brady Kids on which someone had added magic marker moustaches to everyone.
Avatar Tue. 1/12/16 2:40pm Tony Coulter:

Probably makes them look heavier.

Yes. Kind of a Deep Purple vibe.
