Pre-hello to Tony and listeners-to-be.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 11:53am Tony Coulter:

Heya, Carmichael!
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 11:56am Tony Coulter:

NB: Today's cassettes are all unreleased. Three are live concert recordings, the other is an unreleased album. None of them have covers, or list track titles — so my typing fingers will be taking a vacation today.

Mmmmm ... oxide. Howdy, Tony, all, and 2016!

By the way, in case anyone is familiar with Random Radar's "A Random Sampler" LP: The pic of the Illegal Aliens on the back cover is from this very concert.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 12:17pm Tony Coulter:

Also, don't worry: those tapes aren't really resting on corroded, rusty metal: they're on top of a nice, clean photo of corroded, rusty metal!
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 12:17pm Tony Coulter:

Here comes the Faust cover.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 12:20pm coelacanth:

haha! yeah i guess that might be bad. i regularly wonder about the storage situations of my tapes.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

Here be the Faust, full bore....
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 12:27pm Tony Coulter:

... and here's the Hugh Hopper cover. Lemme know if you spot any other covers/quotes mixed in there.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 12:33pm Tony Coulter:

Aha -- here's another cover! But what is it again? (Scratches head.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 12:34pm coelacanth:

hey Tony...
i was listening to radio boredcast last friday and didn't see the info to a track i really dug, playing c.7:50 pm. i guess that's Vicky's thing, but it was your voice shortly before it. i listened for (well)over an hour more- even when i wanted to do something else! but there was no back-announce in sight. (it was right before "flight of fancy" by Stephan Dillemuth.) is there any way??
(...it was an instrumental,i believe; and very percussive with clanging things that sounded like pipes and pans and such.)
  Tue. 1/5/16 12:38pm Dean:

Thanks, coelacanth, for reminding me that I'd asked Doug Schulkind about the tune that played immediately after Uncle Michael's program last Friday on the GTDR stream. He was in transit and, I think, forgot to check. It sounded like something off Bailey/Metheny's "Sign of Four."
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 12:41pm Tony Coulter:

@ coelacanth: Yeah, I did do a segment for Radio Boredcast -- can't tell anything from the times you mention, though, as it's not always on at the same time (my same segment keeps repeating).

Sounds like maybe it was the last piece of my shift? (Just because I didn't return to the mic.) Here's the playlist: wfmu.org...
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 12:45pm Tony Coulter:

As I mentioned earlier, the guitarist on this Illegal Aliens tape is Steve "Wayside Music" Feigenbaum. I imagine at least some of you have bought something from Steve over the years. He has sent a ton of releases to FMU, including prizes come marathon time. (Thanks, Steve!)
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 12:46pm Tony Coulter:

Oh, his label is Cuneiform -- the distro is called Wayside Music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 12:47pm coelacanth:

Thanks Tony! i'll check it out.
  Tue. 1/5/16 12:48pm Dean:

The Szemzó and the Ferrari both have vocals, though, and not so much "clanging"...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 12:50pm coelacanth:

i just checked them out. i bookmarked Ferrari, but it's not anything on that playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 12:53pm coelacanth:

Dean i think your chances are good! Doug will know... but i doubt it was part of Tony's program and i've got the impression that radio boredcast is randomly generated and there's no daily playlist. (correct,Tony?)
anyway,Thanks for trying.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 12:55pm Tony Coulter:

Not sure if it's randomly generated. I think it just cycles through everything on an endless loop. Could be wrong, though....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 12:56pm coelacanth:

i've liked this entire tape by the way!
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 12:58pm Tony Coulter:

Glad to hear it! It's got pretty good sound quality, all things considered. I've got lots of concert tapes I don't think I'll ever play on this show just because their sound quality is too crappy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 12:59pm coelacanth:

well,Thanks. i'll contact Vicky. if that's true, maybe i can just ("just!") look through every playlist from 3-10-12.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 1:02pm coelacanth:

there's a hint of Miles throughout this tape,i think...and a lesser hint of Zappa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/5/16 1:05pm Ike:

Greetings! How's tricks?
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 1:06pm Tony Coulter:

Ike! Heya!!

Are those fritos mesmerizing that cat there? Or are they poppers?
  Tue. 1/5/16 1:10pm Muffin mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmma:

I hear Soft Machine/Hatfield & the North.
  Tue. 1/5/16 1:10pm Dean:

@coelacanth: I just searched for occurrences of dillemuth or "flight of fancy" at wfmu. Here's the playlist where it occurred in 2012: https://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/45594 Dillemuth's "Lost" precedes "Flight of Fancy." It sounds like clanging, but it's nowhere near an hour long. Of course, it's possible that when you heard FoF Radio Boredcast *was* a random assortment, rather than a complete replay of a program.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 1:11pm Tony Coulter:

@ Muffin Ma: Indeed! (Greets, too!)
  Tue. 1/5/16 1:11pm Dean:

Oh, wait. You weren't looking for an hour-long piece. You were waiting for a back-announce. Dillemuth's "Lost," then?
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 1:15pm Tony Coulter:

More Canterbury influences here, obviously.....
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 1:18pm Tony Coulter:

The sound of six hands clapping.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/5/16 1:18pm Ike:

Pickles, of course! There is video evidence currently circulating that cucumbers and cucumber-based products are terrifying to some cats. Presumably that's why this GIF.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 1:18pm coelacanth:

Dean you're a genius! i haven't checked yet but it's another tool. i'm going to say i would've thought of using the search eventually!
...i have another idea too.
and no, not an hour long.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 1:22pm Tony Coulter:

Not sure who the third wheel is here -- usually the Rascal Reporters were a duo.
  Tue. 1/5/16 1:28pm Muffin Minus:

Gore/Newhouse/& Paul Sears? Drummer /perc.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

itchycoo Loop!
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 1:31pm Tony Coulter:

@ Muffin Minus: Doesn't sound like that lineup to me. Think Kreztmer is there for sure. But who knows...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 1:31pm Carmichael:

Didn't Cuneiform put out some Happy the Man? I'm thinking "Crafty Hands", for one.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 1:33pm Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: Yep. they did indeed put out some Happy the Man. Not "Crafty Hands," though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 1:33pm coelacanth:

Dean Thanks -but that's not it either. it doesn't seem like something that would be on do or diy; whereas Dillemuth does...which is why i thought each track on the boredcast is randomly selected.
in fact, flight of fancy was followed by 5-6 tracks that didn't flow together very well; followed by over an hour of a Laurie Anderson "talk" (about basically nothing)
...'seems pretty random!
- i'm letting this go for now!
  Tue. 1/5/16 1:37pm Dean:

Yeah, I made another oversight in forgetting to factor in your having heard Tony just prior to the track in question. This wouldn't have occurred had the playlists simply cycled through.

I thought this Internet thing was supposed to guarantee perfect information forever.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 1:37pm Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: Here's a (fine) Happy the Man thing Cuneiform put out: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

To my ears, this Feigenbaum/Scott thing has a bit of an Art Zoyd influence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 1:42pm coelacanth:

Dean, they haven't worked out the kinks.

...i laugh at myself...this time because i know that if i do find that track,it's possible i wont think it's as good as i thought it was!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 1:43pm Carmichael:

Thanks, Tony!
  Tue. 1/5/16 1:43pm Dean:

I have a HtM bootleg from around the same time as that Cuneiform record.
  Tue. 1/5/16 1:47pm Muffin Man:

I can Hear/Feel R.I. O. abounds.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 1:48pm Tony Coulter:

Fer sure. Feigenbaum tells me all parts were played by the two of them.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 1:50pm Tony Coulter:

... as far as he can remember, anyhow....
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 1:58pm Tony Coulter:

This Rhythm Plague tape comes with an extra helping of hiss.....
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 1:59pm Tony Coulter:

As far as I know, Rhythm Plague had only one release, also a cassette: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:00pm Tony Coulter:

Plus, they were on this comp, which some of you may be familiar with (Cartoon and 5UUs also appear): www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, Coulterians!
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

... and the Motor Totemist Guild....
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Kind School!!
  Tue. 1/5/16 2:03pm MrFab:

I thought that the name 'Rhythm Plague' sounded vaguely familiar so I looked 'em up: yep, not only from LA but featuring Nels Cline (waaaay before he became Mr Superstar Rock Star with Wilco) and Vinny Golia. Really digging this.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:04pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, MrFab!!
  Tue. 1/5/16 2:06pm Dean:

There's this, which refers to an (unseen, and therefore perhaps only the cassette) LP, and includes the tune from the compilation: http://www.cvltnation.com/a-portrait-of-los-angelespost-punk-underground1977-1987vol-6-article-download/ I recall hearing one or both Clines at a small theater space at a mall in Pasadena, mid-'90s, with a tuba player (memory fails me), G.E. Stinson, and maybe even Liebig. Lotsa qualifications there. Maybe it's all just a vestige of an Angel concert.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:09pm Tony Coulter:

The much-missed Mutant Sounds had their cassette album up before everything was pulled.
  Tue. 1/5/16 2:17pm Minus Man:

Have you heard from Eric?
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:19pm Tony Coulter:

Not in a while. I'm still hoping he might start doing a show on the Drummer stream, as was discussed a while back. Doug?
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:20pm Mayuko:

Happy 2016, Tony!!!
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:21pm Tony Coulter:

Same to you, Mayuko!!

"2016" has a nice ring -- sounds better than "2015" ... so we're off to a good start.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:26pm Tony Coulter:

@ Mayuko: Our icons look like they could be in the same movie.
  Tue. 1/5/16 2:27pm MrFab:

There's a great Mutant Sounds podcast on the Dublab site. Think they've only done a couple episodes so far.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:29pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, I should give those a listen.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:37pm Mayuko:

Haha, that's true & that movie should come with some weird soundtrack!
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:42pm Tony Coulter:

So, I've decided to put together a comp of Japanese stuff from the '80s for my next marathon premium. Many of you are gifted punsters/wordplayers, so I'll throw this question out to you: Any suggestions for a good catchy title that doesn't mention "rising sun" or "yen"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 2:49pm Cecile:

Who was in Rhythm Plague?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 2:49pm Cecile:

how about Ooh Mami! (umami)
Tasty Japanese riffs from the 80s
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:51pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Cecile!

Rhythm Plague was Nels Cline, Wayne Peet, & Steuart Liebig (aka "Steubig") ... plus others, sometimes, I guess...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 2:52pm Cecile:

Ha! I thought it was either him or the Regressive Aid dudes.
  Tue. 1/5/16 2:53pm MrFab:

Avant-Gardzilla? (sorry)

Sushi Mask Replicas. (oi, that was even worse. I'll stop now)
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:54pm Mayuko:

All that came to my mind right now is something like El Matcha y la Nena ((c) Liaisons Dangereuses)... something Macho = Matcha (tea)... just thinking out loud. The problem would be the Japanese 80's is far from macho, haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 2:56pm Cecile:

maybe it doesn't have to be pun-based. maybe there is a translated Japanese phrase that would work.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:56pm Mayuko:

But probably if they're matcha, they are not macho anyway. Matcha tea is used for traditional tea ceremony FYI. not sure how popular it is in the US...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 2:57pm Cecile:

From what I have gleaned from the wikis, karaoke means "empty orchestra" in Japanese. That could be a cool title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 2:58pm Cecile:

I love matcha. Of course I get the ground up kind you can dissolve in cold water. it's becoming more popular over here.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:58pm Tony Coulter:

The one time I attended a tea ceremony, the green tea was so strong it was practically like crack.
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 2:59pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks for the title suggestions everyone! Keep 'em coming!
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 3:00pm Mayuko:

I'm actually assuming some people did have druggy experience in tea ceremony especially when it's done in a tea room like this: pds.exblog.jp...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 3:01pm listener james from westwood:

Been submerged in work but this show has been an ideal sonic life preserver! Thanks, Tony!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/5/16 3:01pm JtotheK:

thanks Tony! enjoyed the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 3:01pm Cecile:

how about a tourist guide of phrases that any Tony Coulter listener would need?

Like "how much is this cassette?"
"Is that coming from me or the radio?"
"Do you like horn rock"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/5/16 3:02pm Cecile:

wow, that room is incredible!
Avatar Tue. 1/5/16 3:03pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, everyone!

Sorry not to forewarn you about the abrupt ending of that last tape -- that's just the way it is.

Thanks for showing up ... and see you all next week!
