Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

HNY RevRab!
  Fri. 1/1/16 12:14pm Dean:

This TVZ is one of the best sounding live recordings, in terms of engineering. And Little Feat's aint' half bad, either. Mine's the Mobile Fidelity LP package.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:15pm Uncle Michael:

But the Townes has no overdubs.
  Fri. 1/1/16 12:15pm Dean:

First misplaced apostrophe of the year.
  Fri. 1/1/16 12:16pm Jeff g.:

May 2016 be sweet for you, Uncle Michael, and all assembled!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:17pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Jeff...I'll second that emotion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:17pm Brian in UK:

Can we leave out Townes terrible jokes please.
  Fri. 1/1/16 12:18pm Dean:

You saying there should have been overdubs, Brian?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:19pm Uncle Michael:

Consider them left out, Brian. Happy New Year.
  Fri. 1/1/16 12:19pm Dean:

Which reminds me of another very well recorded live album by a solo guitarist who tells jokes, Leo Kottke's from Denver.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:20pm Uncle Michael:

There are so many great live albums that I've decided this will be the theme of the first show of the year from now on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:23pm Brian in UK:

Well you go to hear the songs you know and then some.
Cannot get to grips with this idea of playing albums right through live.
  Fri. 1/1/16 12:25pm Dean:

Natalie Cole has joined her father.
Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 12:26pm glenn:

trappeer john is off to that big medical tent in the sky. as is natalie cole.
Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 12:26pm Gary:

I like live albums if the sound is good on them. I have some stinkers. But also some great live stuff. It's a mixed bag -- but I'm not saying anything new!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:26pm Uncle Michael:

That's a damned shame, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:27pm Brian in UK:

Talking of Little Feat is Electrif Lycanthrope your cup of tea regards recording quality?
Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 12:27pm Lane Gray:

Happy New Year, Y'all

  Fri. 1/1/16 12:29pm Jeff g.:

Groovy. Dig it.
Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 12:29pm Lane Gray:

Brian, did you catch ISIHAC the Monday before Christmas? Rob Brydon did "Little Stick of Blackpool Rock" to the tune of "Delilah"
  Fri. 1/1/16 12:31pm Dean:

Don't know that one, Brian, but I gather it's an official release of an Amazing Korneyfone Record Label bootleg. TAKRL was a great label, variations in recording quality notwithstanding.
Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 12:35pm glenn:

is james gadson the drummer on that bill withers track, by any chance?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:36pm Uncle Michael:

yes glenn!
Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 12:38pm Lane Gray:

Got blackeyed peas with Herman's ham shanks (like hocks, but meatier) for New Year's
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

Perfect. It was bagel and lox and scrambled eggs here...clam chowder later...
Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 12:43pm Lane Gray:

No leftover tamales? Those things looked GOOD
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:45pm Brian in UK:

@Lane. No, forgot the new series. Rob Brydon being Welsh has a good voice and does a great Tom Jones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:46pm Brian in UK:

Oh Dean I love nothwithstanding.
  Fri. 1/1/16 12:47pm Dean:

Don't forget Ravi Shankar and company's tuning at the outset of George Harrison's Concert for Bangla Desh. The Pandit managed a one-liner in response to the enthusiastic audience's applause.
Avatar    Fri. 1/1/16 12:49pm listener james from westwood:

Sky's a variety of whites and grays, overcast, but temps are not too hostile. From here through next week we've got bright skies but sub-freezing nights. In other words, winter's finally arrived.
Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 12:49pm Lane Gray:

31 with 15 MPH winds is NOT groovy (I got home yesterday morning for a five day weekend just like Christmas. time off good. two day paychecks less good)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:51pm Uncle Michael:

Lane, I'll have one of my El Taquito Express tamales after the show. Saving the homemade ones...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Finally Winter here NewHampshuh. Yuck. Above Freezing which is all you can hope for...High of around 15°F promised for Mon. ...
  Fri. 1/1/16 12:52pm Dean:

My MIL made menudo with the leftover chile we made for tamales. Muy bueno.
Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 12:52pm glenn:

did james fine you if you didn't hit him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...don't eat beasties anymoe - but seriously - self-made tamales!!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 12:54pm Uncle Michael:

The key to those tamales is mixing some of the chile puree into the dough. It's a Rick Bayless recipe. The filling has rasins and olives in it.
  Fri. 1/1/16 12:54pm Dean:

Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 12:57pm Lane Gray:

Herman's meats does fairly decent tamales. Or at least they sell decent ones. Dunno if they make or buy. I need to get up to Porubsky for the murder pickles (people not near Topeka: they heat their pickles with mustard oil. Yum)

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 1:06pm Uncle Michael:

That must have been expensive, Dean. It's a pity we never ran into each other.

Chrom, was it still Tom in 66?
I've never been on anybody's live record, but my mom's on the Seldom Scene's "Live at the Cellar Door"
And a friend of mine has spoiled "Lost Sailor" on every recording I've heard of the Dead May 1, 1981 Hampton Coliseum" (That's Steve Kolander yelling "Hey Greg, you sonofabitch")
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 2:05pm Parq:

Speaking of Barry Manilow, from Dave Barry's annual year in review:

In Paris, two million people march in a solidarity rally following the horrific terrorist attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Eyebrows are raised when not a single top U.S. official attends, but several days later, Secretary of State John Kerry arrives in France with James Taylor, who — this really happened — performs the song You’ve Got a Friend. This bold action strikes fear into the hearts of terrorists, who realize that Secretary Kerry is fully capable, if necessary, of unleashing Barry Manilow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 2:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...if the universe is Infinite, there is probably a world somewhere where TheWho, Slade, & Humble Pie play a show together every weekend & Happiness reigns...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 2:06pm Uncle Michael:

I'd live there.
     Fri. 1/1/16 2:07pm Listener Robert:

The illusion is hokey, charming, & almost convincing, thanks. UM even had a little reverb on himself at the beginning, suggesting that he was in a big space, though he seems to have reduced it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 2:08pm Uncle Michael:

My reverb *never* varies. This is a VERY big space!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 2:11pm Uncle Michael:

Funny Lane should mention that record...
Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 2:13pm Lane Gray:

Love the way Bessie kicked that off (Bessie is the name of the bass)
     Fri. 1/1/16 2:13pm Listener Robert:

Whatever, the theater of the mind here has you near the stage in one single venue that all of these performers are lined up in. Unless it's an outdoor one or one of those multi-room deals where you're carrying your mic from stage to stage.
     Fri. 1/1/16 2:14pm Listener Robert:

You know, that'd be fun next year, having a little bleedover with another act in the distance or the next room while you're in this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 2:15pm Uncle Michael:

I knew that would happen as the audience sound faded from track to track. It's a bonus.

Second stage bleed...heh.
Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 2:15pm chromaphone:

I don't actually know the names of the steeler if that's what you are asking Lane. Gotta learn more. I was super impressed when in one of the shows Don Rich busted out a fiddle and wailed with some other fiddler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 2:15pm Uncle Michael:

Where is Bessie today, Lane?
     Fri. 1/1/16 2:15pm Listener Robert:

I think it could easily be done w 2 turntables, the output of one potted down.
Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 2:18pm Lane Gray:

Probably in Kensington, Maryland, since I don't think he's playing today.
Dad still has Bessie, and it's his main bass. He also has a collapsible Eminence bass for flying dates
Fri. 1/1/16 2:19pm listener james from westwood:

Took this show over to the gym. Surprisingly empty; usually there's more resolutionaries sweating away the Champagne.
Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 2:20pm glenn:

welp, i just threw out my 30 year old rolodex, and the business cards in it as well. i hated to do it, but a rolodex seems pretty pointless anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/1/16 2:23pm Uncle Michael:

They're being snapped up by hipsters, aren't they? Big money...
  Fri. 1/1/16 2:24pm Dean:

First LPs make a comeback, next thing you know it's Rolodexes. When will the command line resurface?
     Fri. 1/1/16 2:25pm Listener Robert:

Especially where one cut starts w crowd noise that wasn't on the other, that's when you'll say you're going from stage to stage.

I was at an indoor multi-stage fest one New Year, and it was surprising how little bleedover there was from one to another, even as loud as they were. Just a little percussion thump occasionally.
Avatar Fri. 1/1/16 2:27pm Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael, are you sure it isn't Memorex?
     Fri. 1/1/16 2:27pm Listener Robert:

It was also interesting how, not being a night person, as they played overnight 12/31-1/1 I was nodding off even during the loudest sets.

In "Illuminatus!", "Kick Out the Jams" was interpreted as code language for purging the Justified Ancients of Mummu.

In additional to the iconic song "Glad to Be Gay" (which I hadn't known had been banned by the BBC), references to him appeared (without my having twigged to them) in _Ashes to Ashes_ (the sequel and finale to the excellent _Life on Mars_ TV series):
