Hello Tony - got out your alcohol swab and rewind pencil?
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, Webhamster! I did just pour a good stiff 97%-proof drink for the tape heads, yes.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

So, the tape on now is the one on (your) right. For some reason, it's very hard to photograph -- kept on coming out blurry.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 12:11pm Peter Nelson:

Hi Tony, James, V & Henry.

Used to have a Casio SK-1 eons ago.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 12:31pm Tony Coulter:

... which was a crappy sampler, not an organ ... so I don't know why I mentioned it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/3/15 12:32pm Carmichael:

Hey there, Tony and peeps. In and out due to meetings, but trying to listen.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 12:32pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Carmichael! Time those meetings for my mic breaks....

Home Produkt (the label this cassette is on) released an LP that has gotten a fair amount of airplay on FMU over the years: the comp "An der Schönen Blauen Donau" www.discogs.com...
  Tue. 11/3/15 12:44pm Neg-guh-tor:

Just bought it.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 12:46pm Tony Coulter:

Really?!? You mean this instant or recently? It's a fine, fine LP, with amazing cover art.
  Tue. 11/3/15 12:48pm Neg-guh-tor:

This instant! Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/3/15 12:49pm JtotheK:

it's been added to my ever-increasing want list...looks nifty!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/3/15 12:49pm Carmichael:

Tony, I'm spending Thanksgiving in Portland. If you can hip me to some better record stores, I'll have more time to blow my paycheck. I'll e-mail you.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 12:50pm Tony Coulter:

Will do, Carmichael -- there are some great record stores here. E-mail away....
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 12:52pm Tony Coulter:

Here's the discogs page for this Mecanique Vegetale cassette (with tracklist): www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/3/15 1:03pm JtotheK:

i'm really enjoying this! discogs link to other recommendations could be quite interesting...will have to do some reading later.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, this cassette itself is kind of pricey these days, unfortunately. Anything on this label (Grafika Airlines) is well worth hearing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 11/3/15 1:06pm Ike:

Hello hello! This sounds great.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 1:07pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Ike!!
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 1:08pm Tony Coulter:

@ Ike: When kittens attack?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/3/15 1:08pm JtotheK:

and speaking of reading -- anybody have any book recommendations for this type of music (discogs calls it industrial/experimental/minimal) from belgium, etc?
  Tue. 11/3/15 1:10pm Dean:

Do you mean books about this type of music, or books to be read while enjoying this type of music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 11/3/15 1:12pm Ike:

@Tony, I switched from Daleks to kittens when Rob W. said he hoped a cat would win the FMU mascot contest this time. I had to add my visual support for that.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

@ JtotheK: Hmm. That's a tough one. There aren't a lot of books on this type of music, though there were plenty of zines devoted to it. I guess you could start with RE/Search's "Industrial Culture Handbook," if you're not familiar with that one. www.researchpubs.com...
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 1:16pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/3/15 1:16pm JtotheK:

@dean - i meant books about this type of music; but would also be open to suggestions about books to be read while enjoying this type of music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/3/15 1:17pm JtotheK:

@tony - not familiar with that... thanks!
Avatar    Tue. 11/3/15 1:17pm Webhamster Henry:

Discogs.com is a Portland organization. 'Nuff sed!
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 1:19pm Tony Coulter:

They put on record fairs here too -- haven't been to any yet, though.
  Tue. 11/3/15 1:19pm Dean:

If "about," and if industrial isn't too far afield, there's Assimilate: http://salexanderreed.com/assimilate/
Avatar    Tue. 11/3/15 1:20pm βrian:

Mmm, I smell pommes frites!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/3/15 1:22pm JtotheK:

thanks Dean!
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 1:23pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, βrian! I certainly had my share of pommes frites when I was in Belgium a few years back. What really got me excited, though, were the north sea shrimp. Have never been a shrimp man, but those hooked me in.
  Tue. 11/3/15 1:23pm Dean:

You're welcome. I found it by searching a library catalog. I don't know the book myself. As for what to read, well, I've been reading acting theory lately, which means I've been reintroduced to Antonin Artaud, and I see that Assimilate refers to Artaud, so I'd suggest...Artaud!
  Tue. 11/3/15 1:25pm Dean:

Coincidentally, Jaap Blonk gave a concert in San Francisco on Halloween night. A friend attended. He said the main work performed was a recitation of a text by Artaud. In the spirit of the holiday.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 1:28pm Tony Coulter:

Anyone who likes this Mecanique Vegetale tape would probably like this too, methinks: www.discogs.com...

It's Belgian electro-experimental whateverness from the '70s
  Tue. 11/3/15 1:28pm Dean:

You could also search a (probably large) library catalog for:

belgium fiction

...and you'll get results including novels, short stories, etc., from/about Belgium. E.g., http://oskicat.berkeley.edu/record=b23067953~S1
Avatar    Tue. 11/3/15 1:29pm Chris from DC:

Jaap Blonk just played here in DC, brilliant set.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 1:30pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Chris from DC!

Not sure, but I think a snatch of an Artaud recording pops up on that Jean-Claude Charlier et Son Orchestre tape.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 1:31pm northguineahills:

Been loving this. Now I have to go wash all of my clothes and bedding since the exterminator just sprayed our building for bedbugs. Yaye! I'll be in the laundromat all day!
  Tue. 11/3/15 1:31pm Dean:

I just learned that Korngold's Die Tote Stadt is based on a novel, Bruges la Morte by a prolific 19th century Belgian author whose name is the same as a good beer: Georges Rodenbach.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 1:32pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, now-bugless-NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/3/15 1:33pm JtotheK:

@Dean - thanks again!
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 1:33pm northguineahills:

Still have mosquitoes.
Avatar    Tue. 11/3/15 1:34pm Chris from DC:

And yeah, that Kosmose record you linked to is stunning. I do need to pick that one up.
Avatar    Tue. 11/3/15 1:49pm listener james from westwood:

Whoo, glad for these tapes today. Heavy editing on the desk!
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 1:52pm Tony Coulter:

Hope you have your razor blade and splicing tape handy.
Avatar    Tue. 11/3/15 1:59pm listener james from westwood:

I am going at it with Steinski-esque microsurgical diligence!
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 2:13pm Tony Coulter:

I'm looking forward to the 12"-single version.
  Tue. 11/3/15 2:23pm Dean:

The joke, of course, is that there are no postcards from Arrakis. And yet there are postcards from Asbestos, in Quebec.
Avatar    Tue. 11/3/15 2:24pm Chris from DC:

Yay, Pseudo Code.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 2:26pm Tony Coulter:

er, I meant to say 50 copies is too FEW!!

Here's the CD set this single comes with: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 2:34pm Tony Coulter:

By the way, this Pseudo Code single comes sans sleeve, but with 2 postcards. I stuck one of the postcards on top of the single for today's playlist photo.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 2:34pm Doug Schulkind:

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Peter Nelson's show, Eclectic Music for Mind and Bodhi, is up next on the Drummer Stream: wfmu.org...
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 2:38pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Ah yes: Arrakis is a planet in "Dune." And Bene Gesserit is a character from "Dune." Oddly, Alain Neffe is not particulalry a fan of Frank Herbert – he just likes the sound of the made-up names (or so he told me).
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 2:41pm V Priceless:

thanx Tony! Remember, he who controls the Spice...
Avatar    Tue. 11/3/15 2:47pm Mayuko:

Thank you Tony. Enjoyed the show a lot, especially loved Mecanique Vegetale!
  Tue. 11/3/15 2:48pm Dean:

Related trivia/arcana: my friend, the topic of the New Yorker article about his made-up language, long ago published an article with his linguistics professor about the language in "Dune." It, and Magma, were inspirations.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 2:49pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks everyone -- but don't go away!! There are still two Pseudo Code tracks coming up.....
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 2:50pm Peter Nelson:

Beautifully strange and relaxing show. Thanks Tony.
Avatar    Tue. 11/3/15 2:50pm listener james from westwood:

Nobody needs postcards on Arrakis. They just take spice and fold space to get to the other person. And dammit I wish they'd stop doing it while I'm in the loo.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 2:54pm Peter Nelson:

I'm going to be a sic-fi nerd and point out that 'Bene Gesserit' is not a character in Dune but the name of a kind of religious order.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/3/15 2:56pm JtotheK:

great show today, thanks Tony!
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 2:57pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks for pointing that out, Peter! I've actually never read "Dune," so I shouldn't have guessed....
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 2:58pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, JtotheK -- and everyone else!! See yerz next week....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 11/3/15 2:58pm iKЄ:

I was going to mention that too, @Peter, even though I never read the books. I love the crazy Lynch "Dune" movie even though it's such a misfire in terms of script and concept. It's so brilliant in terms of creepy atmosphere, design work, and general alien Lynch-iness overall.
Avatar Tue. 11/3/15 2:59pm Tony Coulter:

@ Peter: A heads-up: Won't be playing my out-theme today. It'll be Pseudo Code until the end of the hour.
Avatar    Tue. 11/3/15 3:00pm listener james from westwood:

Many thanks, Tony!
Avatar    Tue. 11/3/15 3:00pm listener james from westwood:

@Ike, I love that bizarre baroque mess of a movie.
