Did anyone back in the day buy records from Nonesuch's new music series, 1969-1980? I see these in the vintage electronic LP bins at the swap meets all the time - haven't bought any yet: taylorjessen.blogspot.com...

Pocket Disc, “Philco manufactured these types of disks under the name "Hip Pocket Records" and sold them to be played on portable record players, which were specially created for the disks. Artists who appeared on these disks included Neil Diamond, The Five Americans, The Doors, Sonny and Cher, Merrilee Rush, and Joan Baez.” en.wikipedia.org...

I'll bet if you play this Burroughs track at half speed he sounds like Bill Cosby!

JakeGhould:

“Curse Go Back” is that from some computer speaking things? Sounds like SAM (Software Automatic Mouth) or an old school Voice Box by The Alien Group.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm
Rich in Washington:

It's William S. Burroughs using his real voice in an old tape recorder.
  5:42pm

@Rich: Wow. Well, listen to the intonations from this Alien Group Voice Box. Sounds pretty similar. www.youtube.com...

I read somewhere that Burroughs experimented with a throat microphone - similar to the ones used by WWII fighter pilots, thinking it would yield some interesting effects. I think here are recordings somewhere.

JakeGhould:

@Jaackk: Up until 5 minutes ago I wasn’t here today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm
Rich in Washington:

JakeGhould: THat's pretty funny sounding! Yes, Burroughs had a pretty distinctive voice even when talking normally. I think in that recording, he was trying to sound like some disembodied voice, like a medium channeling something otherworldly.

I remember as a small kid watching some UFO documentary and there was a part with a man who claimed to channel aliens and he spoke in a voice similar to that in the Burroughs recording. I remember it scaring the crap out of me as a kid.
