Since none of today's cassettes have titles on their front covers, let me ID 'em for you: the comp "Vision et Conception du Monde / Die Weltanschauung" is on the left, the comp "Le Défilé des Épaves" is on the right, and in the middle is a mystery tape, with no artist name, album name, or track titles ... your guess is as good as mine. (Not pictured: a cassette from An Bene & Pierre Lambow, which we will only have time to hear part of.)

Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 12:35pm Tony Coulter:

Sad to say, no one will be getting a lifetime supply of pickles, as nobody guessed what record is underneath todays's cassettes. I have to admit it was a rigged contest anyway: The cover of the record is a handmade collage, so each copy is different. It's this thing: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 12:36pm Tony Coulter:

@ Listener James: It's just the horror of existence....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 9/29/15 12:38pm Carmichael:

Here are two items from the advanced-notice department:

1) Next week's show will be 3-hour Canterbury music special

2) Immediately following today's show Peter Nelson will be bringing you the official debut of his new show Eclectic Music for Mind and Bodhi. Starting today he'll be on every Tuesday from 3:00 to 6:00.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 12:47pm Tony Coulter:

... don't miss it ... Peter's show, I mean. (Hit post before I meant to.)

Wow, this comp is chompin'!
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

So, I got the middle tape in the picture above today's playlist in a big batch of cassettes. I have absolutely no idea what it is. There's cover art and even a printed label on the cassette itself, but none of the scribbly writing is even remotely legible. I'll be playing a bit from it at the end of today's show. If anyone has any ideas what it might be, let us know!
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:05pm northguineahills:

Crap, I'm usually unavailable 3-6.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:06pm northguineahills:

I imagine Shazam would be no help (more then half the time on WFMU, or out in public, it rarely works for me).
  Tue. 9/29/15 1:06pm Dean:

Any chance you can display the full art on the unknown cassette? Is there a link to it?
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:07pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, NGH!

I'm glad you dig the industrial sounds, btw. I have a bunch of very harsh noise-type tapes which I've been uncertain about inflicting on you all.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:09pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: No links to further pics, no. The printed label is similar to the cover. There are scattered words, but they are smudged and broken. Perhaps the tape originally came with an insert, which has been lost to time. I'm hoping someone will have a hunch based on the sound. Again, I'll play a bit of it at the end of the show.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:12pm Webhamster Henry:

Doug, you need to have a map of the GTDS host cities posted somewhere. Maybe like these classic octopus memes from the 19th/20th century www.google.com...

hi everybody!
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

So, all four of my shows during October will be specials. The first will focus on Canterbury music, as I said. I'm trying to decide what the other themes will be. One idea: a horn rock special -- or would that make everyone run for the hills?
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:30pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, JtotheK!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 9/29/15 1:35pm Carmichael:

Horn Rock is a great idea, Tony.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:36pm Tony Coulter:

Oh, I should add, pursuant to the month o' specials: Today's Tape Hiss will be the last Tape Hiss until November.
  Tue. 9/29/15 1:36pm Dean:

Horn rock would be just grand. Another theme could be "From the Second Album," but that only crosses my mind because I listened to Acqua Fragile's second album last night. A selection of tunes from various bands'/musicians' second releases would be fun. A similar take: play two selections from each artist, one from an early endeavor, followed by another from a later one.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:37pm Cecile:

Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Carmichael & Dean. I'm thinkin' horn rock + latin rock, since a lot of latin rock is pretty horn-heavy.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:38pm Cecile:

you guys can listen to the Canterbury horn rock special. I will opt out. hahahaha
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

Ahoy there, Cecile!
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:38pm Cecile:

now latin rock I can get behind.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:38pm Cecile:

ahoy, tony!
  Tue. 9/29/15 1:38pm Dean:

Well, okay, then. Play something from Malo "Dos."
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:40pm listener james from westwood:

That was one heck of a mix on that single tape!
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:42pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Malo would be in there for sure.
  Tue. 9/29/15 1:42pm Dean:

Another theme, perhaps: instrumental prog.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:46pm Tony Coulter:

Cecile wouldn't approve of that one.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:48pm Cecile:

Hey, don't make that show for me. I'm one of those people who loves the fact that Rush is an extremely popular band, but never wants to hear their music. Everyone go have your fun!
  Tue. 9/29/15 1:50pm Dean:

Let's run with that. "Music Cecile Would Not Approve."
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:51pm Cecile:

I approve of almost all music. I just don't listen to most of it.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:51pm Tony Coulter:

HA! Google chrome is asking me if I want to translate the playlist.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 1:52pm Cecile:

this stuff I'm hearing right now is great, though.

wow, there is a ton of their stuff on YouTube! I'll have to check it out tonight.
  Tue. 9/29/15 1:58pm Dean:

Another theme: an Alessi Brothers marathon. I dare you.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

@ NGH: Who are you thinking of? I don't know enough to differentiate Japanese stuff by city. It's all Japanese to me.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:02pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: I'm not brave enough for that (not that I've ever knowingly heard them, actually).
  Tue. 9/29/15 2:05pm Dean:

I urge everybody to knowingly hear Alessi Brothers. If you've heard Barnaby Bye you've heard them. They've also written a number of commercial jingles, I believe. You could throw in a Barnaby Bye spin-off band, Wiggy Bits, which I bet you've heard.
  Tue. 9/29/15 2:05pm MrFab:

Cecile, I'm with ya on Rush. Stand tall, my sister!
  Tue. 9/29/15 2:06pm Dean:

Another theme: Yasunao Tone. Or Yasunao Tone Meets Alessi Brothers.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:06pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: I do indeed have the Barnaby Bye LPs -- which I like. Haven't heard Wiggy Bits, though.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:06pm Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, MrFab!
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:07pm northguineahills:

Huh, the new Yasunao Tone w/ the Talibam! album is tops.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:10pm Tony Coulter:

The first cassette by Fâlx çèrêbri (on now) was "a limited C-10 tape with real blood sample and packaged in a plastic back with real sheep's brain." No thanks -- I'll pass.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

er, on just then....
  Tue. 9/29/15 2:12pm Dean:

Wow, @ngh, you're right! Hadn't seen that.

Another theme: music packaged with real blood samples and sheep's brain.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:13pm Tony Coulter:

Too brainy for me.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:16pm northguineahills:

Makes the Eugene Chadbourne cassette I picked up that was encased in a dirty gym sock seem rather tame.

  Tue. 9/29/15 2:25pm Clay:

Chase is kind of the ultimate horn rock experience. Get it On! +Chicago, BS&T, Puzzle, Lighthouse ... Minnie Moore
  Tue. 9/29/15 2:28pm Dean:

If, Lucero, Ides of March, Blurt?
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:29pm Tony Coulter:

@ Clay: Ha! Funny you mention Puzzle. Didn't think many people knew them. I've got both of LPs and would indeed play them on any horn rock special, plus most of the others you mention. (Don't know Get It On! or Minnie Moore.)
  Tue. 9/29/15 2:29pm Dean:

If one saxophone makes a horn band, then in addition to Blurt, Claw Hammer.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:29pm Cecile:

Some Captain Beefheart. Roxy Music!
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:30pm Cecile:

Oingo Boingo, Skatalites, Fela, James Brown, any Stax record w/the Memphis horns - now THAT would be a show!
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:30pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: One sax doesn't make a horn rock band. There has to be some brass in there too, not just reeds.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:32pm Tony Coulter:

My pledge to you: I will do a horn rock show filled with the stuff people normally call horn rock. Except ... it will be good.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:32pm Cecile:

  Tue. 9/29/15 2:33pm Dean:

Chicago Symphony Orchestra's "Great Gate of Kiev," the limit of horn rock.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:33pm Tony Coulter:

Next week, though, will be Canterbury stuff -- including Euro and U.S. bands influenced by that sound.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:35pm Cecile:

okay, then I will listen to Liz or archives.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:35pm Cecile:

I heartily endorse this program. I just won't be listening to it.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:36pm Tony Coulter:

Don't worry -- it won't be heavy on wanky endless solos. There will be plenty of short, snappy psychedelic songs.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:37pm Cecile:

I'll give it a go. If I feel like I just ate a whole aural chocolate cake after three songs, I'll bail.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:39pm Tony Coulter:

Coming up next after this cassette: the mystery tape. Help me figure out what the hay it is....
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:41pm Peter Nelson:

Canterbury sound next week? Yummy. Love it. Huge Caravan fans here.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:41pm Tony Coulter:

It's the orange-y cassette in the middle of today's photo lineup.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:41pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Peter!

There will be tons of Caravan....
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:43pm Peter Nelson:

I know it's their most commercial of the early albums, but Land Of Gray and Pink is a favourite.
  Tue. 9/29/15 2:43pm Dean:

"Wanky endless solos"!? How dare you insult Dave Stewart!
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:44pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:49pm Tony Coulter:

See you, Listener James! Thanks for stopping by.....
  Tue. 9/29/15 2:49pm Dean:

I'll go out on a limb and guess that the mystery tape is *not* Alessi Brothers.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:50pm Tony Coulter:

  Tue. 9/29/15 2:50pm Clay:

True, some solos are "wanky" but the broad-based dismissal of solos as such seems rote to me. Too easy to dismiss solos in this way. Just my opinion. Enjoying what you're playing, Tony. Hard to listen at work, but I do when I can.
  Tue. 9/29/15 2:51pm MrFab:

John Oswald? Big City Orchestra? Zoviet France? Whoever did it, I'd love to hear the whole thing someday (hint, hint)
  Tue. 9/29/15 2:51pm Clay:

Then again, I was a purveyor of lengthy solos in a previous career, so I am just sensitive, I guess.
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:52pm Rich in Washington:

It DOES almost sound like John Oswald. DO you think it's from one of his Mystery Tapes series?
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:52pm Tony Coulter:

@ Clay: I'm all for long solos, and in fact will sneak plenty in when Cecile isn't paying attention.
  Tue. 9/29/15 2:52pm Dean:

I'm catching a whiff of Edgar Froese's "Epsilon in Malaysian Pale," not that I imagine this is him. Does a sequencer kick in at some point?
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:54pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: To me it doesn't look like one of Oswald's Mystery Tapes, graphically speaking. Does sound a bit like him -- sort of less cut up, though, no?
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:55pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: No sequencers show up, no -- this same approach continues through all four tracks. The tape runs around an hour.
  Tue. 9/29/15 2:55pm MrFab:

I thought his Mystery Tapes usually featured more variety than just one theme, but I'm not familiar with the whole catalog.

Also reminds me of what Eno did to Pachelbel's' Canon on "Discreet music," but I'm pretty sure we can rule him out. (Unless he had some DIY tape period I'm not familiar with!)
Avatar Tue. 9/29/15 2:57pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks for showing up, everyone!! See you next week.....
