     Fri. 9/4/15 9:32am Listener Robert:

I'm now on the drug Eliquis, to prevent possible thromboembolic disease from the paroxysms I've had lately of atrial fibrillation. But whenever I try to remember the name Eliquis, instead I think Esquivel. Got any Esquivel?
  Fri. 9/4/15 9:33am doca:

@Alex: it also reminds me of Chico Science, but it also represents some trends on Brazilian rap nowadays, of mixing Brazilian music with rapping

BTW, @Doug, this song is about people being nosey about the singer's life and asking how he manages to do his things and whether he was not supposed to be doing something else. Then it urges people to stick with what's proper to them

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/4/15 9:41am ausmanx:

uncle michael, seems to me so many NGOs are problematic these days, just channelling taxpayer money to private companies, it's pretty difficult. i still tend to think MSF are about as good as it gets, and they're frenetic in refugee camps in various locations right now, doing great work...
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

@doca
Thanks for the details!!

@doug you're the greatest. i also just noticed that there's a new post up at Monrakplengthai. i'm not at all sure that i can take this much happiness.
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

Pace yourself, hyde! I've grabbed but not yet listened to the latest Monrakplengthai offering.

Here it is, y'all: monrakplengthai.blogspot.com...

@Doug Schulkind: With this stream's expanded schedule of freeform superstars, it's more like Give The Drummer Too Much! It's an embarrassment of musical riches!
Avatar    Fri. 9/4/15 11:34am hyde:

@Gaylord Fields what we really need Doug to do is expand the number of hours in the day so we have time to listen to all this stuff
Avatar    Fri. 9/4/15 11:35am Jeff Golick:

I would sign up for that email, @hyde.
Avatar    Fri. 9/4/15 11:35am Webhamster Henry:

GTDR is also geographically diverse .. it's like telecommuting radio. It'd be great to add some physically resident Africans, Slavs, or South Asians on the stream!
  Fri. 9/4/15 11:37am casequarter:

GTDR = Radio Free Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/4/15 11:38am Brian in UK:

With all due respect this is all well and good for us listeners but Doug needs a fuckin' decent job. Someone.
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

@Gaylord Fields
In terms of embarrassment of riches: Takes one to know one.
Avatar    Fri. 9/4/15 11:38am Webhamster Henry:

Ah, the Nina Simone requirement has been fulfilled. And with Brel, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/4/15 11:39am Brian in UK:

This is the damnest record as it includes Everyones Gone to the Moon.
Avatar    Fri. 9/4/15 11:39am listener james from westwood:

Never heard Nina like this before!
  Fri. 9/4/15 11:39am Dean:

I want to hear Nina Simone sing Brel duets with Theo Bleckmann.
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

@Webham Hen
Yes, this is a Brel cover indeed!

Spruce boughs are de rigueur, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/4/15 11:43am Gaylord Fields:

@Brian in UK: Yes, on one hand, there's the idle rich; and, conversely, there's Doug. Yet sometimes I almost wish I didn't have a job, so I could listen to GTDR, Ichiban, and the broadcast signal on constant rotation.

Clint talks to the trees, and a chair made out of those trees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/4/15 11:44am Uncle Michael:

Clint's got nothing on Dick Smothers.
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:44am Flash Strap:

I used to watch this flick with my dad. When this scene would start up, he'd always yell at the screen, "No Clint! Don't do it!"
Avatar    Fri. 9/4/15 11:44am Webhamster Henry:

@Gaylord That explains a LOT!

I'm actually thinking of writing something that builds my own WFMU out of carefully timed live shows, archives and favorited tunes to fill in the blank spots.
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:45am still b/p:

Oh-oh...last time I heard Clint doing this, it got stuck in my head for plenty long time.
Avatar    Fri. 9/4/15 11:45am hyde:

this is amazing. is that toots thielmans on harp?
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

@hyde
I doubt it. Just some studio hire I'd bet.
Avatar    Fri. 9/4/15 11:46am bobdc:

Doug, I believe you wanted to be notified of typos--Armtstrong is a typo.

Tell me this record (Louis Armstrong singing Pharaoh Sanders) actually exists, and I'm not just hallucinating again.
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

@Gaylord
I was pleased to make that connection a few years back!

@bobdc
THANK you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/4/15 11:47am Brian in UK:

Thanks Doug.
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:48am Flash Strap:

Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:48am ndbob:

wow never knew Louis recorded this
Avatar    Fri. 9/4/15 11:49am hyde:

@Doug yeah, i imagine you're right. this Armstrong is amazing too, though. (this Pharaoh Sanders tune was a high school fave). Thanks for the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/4/15 11:49am Gaylord Fields:

My stars, this is perfect! I thought I knew about this song's existence, but this is a revelation!
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
His last-ever recording session in May 1970.
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:50am Flash Strap:

Wow, wow, wow. I can't believe I never knew any of this
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:51am Flash Strap:

I'm weepin' at the beauty of it
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

I heard this song on the radio maybe 35 years ago. It was on Washington's then-great WPFW. I nearly drove off the road. I missed the DJ back announcing it, so I wasn't 100% sure I heard what I thought I heard: Louis Armstrong singing with Leon Thomas. I spent years getting "you are a fool" looks from clerks in record store jazz departments when I asked about it. When I finally found it, it exceeded the engorged expectations I had for it. Amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/4/15 11:53am coelacanth:

oh my that Louis Armstrong track was EXTRAORDINARY!!
  Fri. 9/4/15 11:53am Mr C:

Billy Stewart was a complete original..Chess band/arrangers were perfect complements...I saw him performm in Phila shortly before his horrible accident in NC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/4/15 11:54am coelacanth:

(okay- everyone's said that already.)
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:54am Flash Strap:

Thanks for playing that Doug
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

On this same Louis Armstrong recording, he covers "Everybody's Talkin'," "We Shall Overcome," "His Father Wore Long Hair," "This Black Cat Has 9 Lives," "Give Peace a Chance."

And speaking of weeping, get out your hankies for our next and final selection...
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

Oh wow, Mr C. I simply adore Mr. Stewart.
Avatar    Fri. 9/4/15 11:56am Alex In Illinois:

There is a recording that is allegedly of Louis Armstrong setting a tempo by saying: "Not too slow, not too fast, just kind of half-assed". It is on an old Kermit Schaefer Bloopers record. Apparently, that actually did NOT happen, but was actually a hoax with someone imitating Louis Armstrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/4/15 11:57am Gaylord Fields:

When I tune in to shows like Doug's, I listen intently, take note of things — and brazenly steal!

excellent show Doug!

I *so* want to dislike Sondheim, but no matter how hard I try... He learned well at the feet of Bernstein.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/4/15 11:59am Jeff:

Goodbye, Dean Jones. You weren't just that Disney guy.
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 12:00pm Flash Strap:

What a doozy of a finale
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 12:00pm Doug Schulkind:

I am a card-carrying lover of Sondheim. A whole deck of cards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/4/15 12:00pm Gaylord Fields:

Sondheim changed Broadway for the better. He's a goddamn hero.
  Fri. 9/4/15 12:01pm jessie:

And hearing Elaine Stritch in the scrum . . . well . . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/4/15 12:02pm Uncle Michael:

Great close, Doug...thanks!
Avatar    Fri. 9/4/15 12:02pm Webhamster Henry:

Nina Simone should have covered this .. but she did do: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/4/15 12:02pm Jeff:

(And let's raise another glass to Elaine Stritch! Even though she was off the sauce in her later years, and needed to be.)
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 12:02pm Doug Schulkind:

And he always hated this song. Thought it took the easy way out, ending Company on a too-positive note.

@Jessie
Yes!
  Fri. 9/4/15 12:02pm Listener Gregory:

Hard to believe this guy (Jones) starred in the Disney movies I saw in childhood, like That Darn Cat!
Avatar    Fri. 9/4/15 12:02pm Alex In Illinois:

Anyone else listening on headphones? The use of stereo to give the illusion of location is very well done. Great recording engineer.

Nothing wrong with learning from Bernstein.

Pennebaker's documentary on the recording of the Company OST is really great.

great show
thanks for the glory
Avatar Fri. 9/4/15 12:03pm still b/p:

I thought that was Stritch, and in confirming it I learned Anthony Perkins started rehearsing for the Jones lead but left to direct something.

thank you Mr. drummer. Have a great weekend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/4/15 12:04pm Jeff:

I'm still glad they replaced "Happily Ever After" with "Being Alive".

Guess I'm just a softie who craves hope.
