Options Brian Turner: Playlist from August 18, 2015 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

I miss it, but it's not the same place.
Avatar Tue. 8/18/15 4:33pm fabricaguy:

in 2002 I asked a bunch of jaded college kids about the stooges in ann arbor once and they got all bummed out, they were Braid fans

We used to road trip down from the sticks to Club Heidelberg - before I moved to a bigger city, it seemed like the coolest place in the world. We used to freak out looking at the calendar.

a lot of "white belt" action in Ann Arbor back in those days...

Club Heidelberg! I saw the Replacements there. And the DJ Whiz Kid.
Avatar Tue. 8/18/15 4:38pm βrian:

Joe's Star Lounge was another great venue.

I DJ'd at WCBN from 83-87
Avatar Tue. 8/18/15 4:41pm Polyus:

Blind Pig was the only other venue I was familiar with, but that was like '88-'91. Heidelberg got all the SubPop/AmRep/T&G etc bands.
Avatar Tue. 8/18/15 4:41pm Cecile:

I did the Words and Music fanzine, a freebie for our playlists.

Blind Pig I saw some great people at.
Avatar Tue. 8/18/15 4:42pm βrian:

@Cecile: I may have asked you whether you knew Lee W from CBN. Same era.
Avatar Tue. 8/18/15 4:43pm Cecile:

I don't remember him. That doesn't mean anything.
Avatar Tue. 8/18/15 4:43pm βrian:

Blind Pig was the first place in Ann Arbor to serve espresso.
Avatar Tue. 8/18/15 4:44pm Cecile:

2nd place, but that place was overpriced and died quickly. It was next door to Discount Records.

My friends were working there and drank 6 coffee cups of espresso once . They didn't sleep for 3 days.

that espresso was great, especially after a bender.
Avatar Tue. 8/18/15 4:47pm Cecile:

I remember the transition from the little basement Bling Pig to the rock club, too. And the Ark moving around.

Joel's show is always interesting but I'm concerned about the occasional tilde in place of a song title in his playlists. It's intentional and he won't explain. I'm worried it may be a sign of some mysterious new form of Record Collector's Disease.
