Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

  Fri. 8/7/15 12:24pm Dean:

@Mike East: What do you know (ideally, from experience) about Meyer Sound gear? Is it really "all that"? I'm skeptical that better sound emerges from more complex systems, but maybe I'm confusing home audio with public address for big venues. Speaking of which, I'll hear Jimmy LaFave at Freight & Salvage next week. F&S uses Meyer Sound, I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/7/15 12:24pm Mike East:

@Brian - no, though we did rent stuff to the dems for something last month and all the gear was stolen from the venue.

For me, that place I can go when I'm feeling very low is WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/7/15 12:29pm Mike East:

@Dean - I know that it is very expensive and high quality and some artists/sound people demand it. We don't own any, so I don't have firsthand experience with it, though I've had to "subrent" it at times at a very high price. On a similar level with L'acoustics. We have mostly EAW here which sounds fine to me. johnk77 has more pro ears than I do, though, so he might have better info.

Hey V!
  Fri. 8/7/15 12:37pm Dean:

I know an eency-weency about home audio, exactly zero about professional sound. I'd never heard of L'Acoustics. How precious. Their US HQ is in a California town with the mellifluous name, Oxnard. And they don't shy from a pun: "L-Acoustics Hits The Mark On Knopfler's Current World Tour." Pretty dire, that.

Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 12:44pm Alex In Illinois:

Back in June, for our trip home fromOregon, our sister-in-law made us some granola. At first she was unhappy with the slightly burnt smell that came from the oven and thought she had ruined it. But then I tasted it and found that it actually tasted superb! It had a slightly browned flavor to it.
  Fri. 8/7/15 12:47pm Dean:

A corollary, Lane, pertains to live acoustic (un-amplified) performances in venues larger than a large room. I remember stunning sound at Japan America Theatre in LA's Little Tokyo during performances by small orchestras and chamber ensembles. It appears the venue is now dubbed the Aratani Theatre, and was recently equipped with "a newly custom-designed Bose® RoomMatch® sound system." Oh, well.
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 12:48pm Lane Steelpicker:

Let me know who's her steel player. Mike said she was a cool lady
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 12:48pm listener james from westwood:

Granola always seemed like it would bear watching and sampling while baking, so it doesn't flash over, much as when one boils milk. That one second to answer a text and boom, it's erupting out of the pot like that petri dish of alien in "The Thing."

By the way - the "Britannia And Mr Bridger, If You Please" music was actually "Rule Britannia", a poem by James Thompson, set to music by Thomas Arne in 1740!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 12:54pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 1:00pm Peter Nelson:

Not really a variation, no. It's just Rule Britannia played on a different instrument to usual. Crediting it to Quincy Jones is like saying Hendrix wrote 'Star Spangled Banner'....er....except in that case he did kind of re-write it...but you get the idea.
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 1:03pm Sarah N:

I didn't see it listed but the bass or guitar riff in the song that preceded "The Boxer" was either reminiscent or exactly the same as that from Steppenwolf's "tighten up your Wig" UM, can you comment?
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 1:33pm βrian:

We have a rather dreary folk show on the local public radio, called Simply Folk. Since it plays simultaneously on several of the stations, leaving no alternative, it's come to be known as Simply Fucked.
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 1:37pm still b/p:

That level of production was fine for Aerosmith. I had no appetite for the layers of flourishes and frosting and foolishness that came later.
  Fri. 8/7/15 1:38pm Dean:

Sorry, Sarah, I was waylaid by stuff. Well, there's "Where the Bee Sucks, There Suck I," lyrics by a has-been wannabe movie scriptwriter out of Stratford. Arne lived a bit later than Henry Purcell, interpretations of whose works by Kirkby are also resplendent. Like Purcell, he wrote works for stage.

Gotta go underground for a spell, Uncle Michael, so I'll say my thanks! and good-byes! now.
Thanks!
Good-bye! Good-bye!
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 1:49pm βrian:

I just received a Belgian care package with honingwafels, among other goodies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

See you later Jeff. Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

are hogenwafels anything like stroopwafels?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 1:51pm PMD:

@Mike in CA - welcome to the board!
Avatar    Fri. 8/7/15 1:55pm Guido from Cologne:

Hi Michael...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 1:57pm Uncle Michael:

Hi Guido! PMD! Mike in CA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 1:59pm doctorjazz:

Too hectic to comment today, but love this Leonard Cohen, had to post!
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 1:59pm βrian:

Yes, the honey-soaked analog to stroopwafels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 2:00pm melinda:

Lou!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 2:01pm Uncle Michael:

Sounds yummy.
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 2:01pm listener james from westwood:

Whoa. To this day I didn't know the name of "Soul Serenade." I only knew it as the kicky instrumental bed Laura Cantrell used a million years ago for some mic breaks. Sounds fine coming outta Lou!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 2:02pm PMD:

@Brian, damn, now I want one or two or three... Honey Stinger has waffles kinda like that.
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 2:03pm Lane Steelpicker:

Love the Lou. Like aping the horn bleats on steel
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 2:08pm Uncle Michael:

That's gotta sound cool.
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 2:11pm Lane Steelpicker:

It made me realize that choice of inversions matters. There's a HUGE gulf between "pretty cool" and "awwwww, sweeeet '
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 2:15pm Pedro G.:

Sorry I'm late. Just got back from Cleveland after doing Trump and Christie's' hair for the debate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 2:17pm Uncle Michael:

What do you use for that?
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 2:20pm still b/p:

I'm curious about technique also. In the portion of the debate I caught, Trump's frontmost hair....area...seemed different for the occasion -- more lightly spun-airy and in soft focus.
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 2:21pm βrian:

@Pedro: I do hope you braided them together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 2:22pm doctorjazz:

Saw Elvis Costello and Steely Dan last week @ PNC in Jersey...Elvis rocked, would have thought it was the Attractions from 1978, great set! (the Dan were not quite as good, a bit draggy, oh well...)
  Fri. 8/7/15 2:23pm Dean:

Another Hank VIII tune?
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 2:32pm Dominick:

Bimbo & Betty
Avatar    Fri. 8/7/15 2:33pm 23 Wolves:

Man, that slide whistle is just great!
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 2:34pm still b/p:

Was just going to say that slide whistle...bringing new respect and appeal to the instrument.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 2:35pm Uncle Michael:

The Imposters bring their A-game.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 2:36pm Uncle Michael:

Welcome 23 Wolves!

Hi doctorjazz!
Avatar    Fri. 8/7/15 2:37pm 23 Wolves:

Hails, Unc! I catch your show most weeks but I rarely comment, for, as you mentioned, I am usually doing stuff. Much love from St. Louis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 2:38pm Uncle Michael:

Thank you!
  Fri. 8/7/15 2:38pm Dean:

Man, Billy Paul was recording hella long time ago!
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 2:39pm listener james from westwood:

Ooh, dig this Astronauts track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 2:40pm Uncle Michael:

typos galore!
  Fri. 8/7/15 2:41pm Dean:

I wonder if he met Anselm.
  Fri. 8/7/15 2:41pm βrian:

Typos are the most common blood type.
  Fri. 8/7/15 2:42pm Dean:

I think you mean "bold type."
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 2:44pm still b/p:

C'mon, don't B negative.
  Fri. 8/7/15 2:45pm Dean:

Oh, it does say "1076." I read it as "1976," and I thought that was hella long time ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/7/15 2:49pm Mike East:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 2:50pm Uncle Michael:

I feast on the typos of the living.

Was just watching Weller doing an NPR Tiny Desk concert. No Jam tunes, just new stuff. But at least he continues to challenge himself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 8/7/15 2:57pm doctorjazz:

IT'S BACK!!!
Avatar Fri. 8/7/15 2:57pm listener james from westwood:

Well, how about that ending tune!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 8/7/15 2:57pm Parq:

The mail arrives late hereabouts. Mine just did. My swag was in it, and Uncle Michael's premium was in that. This weekend's listening agenda just got significantly altered.
