...yeah - a bit of sunburn - sue me
...man - we got here one of the FMU-Js I particularly wish was a 24/7 stream of their own - which isn't too far from what archives are...
Avatar Sun. 8/2/15 10:21pm HollyT:

Man--glad I'm missing the heat wave up there
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/2/15 10:21pm JakeGould:

@Ike: Went to Ba Xuyên today for Bahn Mi. Definitely a better local choice than Thanh Da, but still not as good as Hanco’s in Boerum Hill or Lotus in Park Slope.
  Sun. 8/2/15 10:22pm cheri:

now this is a terrific way to cap off a sunday night, with Gaylord, faye and dave mandl!
Avatar Sun. 8/2/15 10:23pm Dave Mandl:

Evening, Ike, dexter, RRN63.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 10:25pm steve:

hi Dave. regarding Brooklyn, aren't we the second biggest city in the US after LA? thats a lotta room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/2/15 10:27pm JakeGould:

@steve: Counting non-hipster/non-brownstone Brooklyn, yes.
Avatar Sun. 8/2/15 10:27pm Dave Mandl:

@steve: There's still a lot of open space at Floyd Bennett Field.
  Sun. 8/2/15 10:28pm cheri:

dave, I want to thank you for the great tunes tonight!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/2/15 10:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Interesting. Of course - I'm not sure anyone knows where LA begins or ends...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/2/15 10:29pm JakeGould:

I miss when Floyd Bennett Field still had some weird, still active in a minor way connection to the Coast Guard and National Guard. Was fun to sneak around old hangars there back in the 1980s.
Avatar Sun. 8/2/15 10:30pm Dave Mandl:

@Jake: It's still a really odd place. Everything from a Sanitation Department training center to campgrounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 10:30pm pacific standard simon:

The City of Los Angeles is one thing, but a lot of people regard Los Angeles as everything in Los Angeles County.
  Sun. 8/2/15 10:32pm ?:

Good evening Dave, loving the Gurdjieff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/2/15 10:33pm JakeGould:

@Dave: One time in the 1980s I snuck into a hangar area with a wrecked Coast Guard plane and—this is the creepy part—the hangar was filled to the brim with vintage, seemingly untouched 1970s cars. All covered with a layer of thick dust. Apparently they were used in weapons tests or something like that? Anyway, we got chased off the property by a guard who came out of a trailer dressed in a bathrobe with a baseball bat. Unless I am blocking he had a gun, but it was definitely a bathrobe. Bizarre place and bizarre to think someone had a job like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 10:33pm pacific standard simon:

...and the Los Angeles Angels are from Anaheim, which is in Orange County.
Avatar Sun. 8/2/15 10:33pm Dave Mandl:

Evening, "?". Thanks.

Avatar Sun. 8/2/15 10:35pm Dave Mandl:

Ah, it's you, joeray. Evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/2/15 10:35pm joeray:

I didn't realize you can post anonymously.
Avatar Sun. 8/2/15 10:36pm Dave Mandl:

@Jake: I was walking around Floyd Bennett Field taking pictures shortly after 9/11 (just by chance), and a helicopter started following me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 10:36pm Anonymous:

It's easy!
  Sun. 8/2/15 10:37pm cheri:

well dave I have to take my leave now, it's been fun hanging out for a short time tonight, I hope to see you next week! night
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/2/15 10:38pm JakeGould:

@DaveMandl: Yup. That kind of place. Creepy and they store “things” there but not enough to be aggressive. Like you were taking pictures, and the followed you but they didn’t arrest you but they still followed you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/2/15 10:39pm Anne On A Mouse:

Yup, what PSS said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/2/15 10:41pm Ike & Ram:

Lotus in Park Slope is that good, eh @Jake@10:21? I've walked past it many times. I'll have to try it sometime. Of the ones I've tried, Ba Xuyên is 2nd only to the place at 369 Broome in Manhattan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/2/15 10:42pm JakeGould:

@Ike: There is a Bahn Mi truck that goes around Manhattan that is quite good as well. Shows up around Varick and Hudson Street.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/2/15 10:46pm JakeGould:

Oh, and then there was the time at Floyd Bennett Field me and some friends were driving around when it was dark just to horse around and then two extremely hobo-looking guys seem to show up out of nowhere in our headlights. Very David Lynch-ian. They asked for a ride to some nearby shelter and we agreed. The guys smelled like death but were hopped up on goofballs or something because they were so twitchy we thought at any moment they’d pull out blades on us. Happily they were just smelly and mentally ill and we drove them to the shelter and that was that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 10:46pm pacific standard simon:

"It's lots of fun to have you there."
  Sun. 8/2/15 10:53pm cheri:

I enjoyed hanging out tonight dave, even if it was for a short time. thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 10:53pm steve:

hmm the skips kinda work
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/2/15 10:54pm JakeGould:

@steve: The skips are not that bad.
Avatar Sun. 8/2/15 10:54pm Dave Mandl:

@steve: Yeah, but it would have never ended. I only have another hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 10:55pm pacific standard simon:

I listened to Don Joyce's final Over The Edge program last night. It was sad, knowing what he didn't know. Apparently, the show is going to continue without him. Hard to imagine it without his voice but, then, they DO have tapes.
Avatar Sun. 8/2/15 10:56pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Well, he left behind a pretty huge legacy, so there's that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 10:59pm pacific standard simon:

Thanks to the Internet Archive, I won't have to digitize the rest of my cassette collection of OTE.
  Sun. 8/2/15 11:04pm PMD:

Dammit. I didn't do my 3 hour conversion from the west coast right! Missed an hour
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 11:07pm pacific standard simon:

@Dave - Agreed, about the bass clarinet -- wonderful tone in the right hands. When I bought one, though, I found that my hands (or mouth) were not right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 11:10pm pacific standard simon:

And GIFs! Gotta have GIFs!

The station is a refuge of vegetarians -- no wonder it's a culinary wasteland.
  Sun. 8/2/15 11:18pm cheri:

dave, i'm surprised that ken doesn't like cheech & chong.

...as opposed to an abattoir...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 11:21pm pacific standard simon:

You know I'm joking, right? Cooking vegetarian AND vegan is just as important as any other kind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/2/15 11:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& abattoir is a perfectly literal & polite term : ) ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 11:24pm pacific standard simon:

I'm just always surprised by the broad overlap of free-form DJs and non-meat-eaters.

"One rabbit stew, coming right up!"
Avatar Sun. 8/2/15 11:27pm Dave Mandl:

When I started here there were very few vegetarians (I was one).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 11:28pm steve:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 11:28pm pacific standard simon:

Sign of the times, I guess. We're all getting older, and thinking about our health & diet more.

howdy pss!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 11:32pm pacific standard simon:

Don Joyce went out claiming to not regret a one of his millions of cigarettes, and I suppose I'll go thinking similarly of all the bacon I've eaten.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 11:38pm pacific standard simon:

There's another instrument I love: the xylophone (or marimba?).
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 11:48pm pacific standard simon:

The pronunciation I find for Icelandic "Sóley" sounds sorta like "so-lay", and seems to translate to "flower" or "sunflower", which seems like an unlikely coincidence, given the meaning of the French "soleil". Loan word, maybe?
Avatar Sun. 8/2/15 11:50pm Dave Mandl:

Ha, that seems possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 11:53pm pacific standard simon:

Language is one of the nerdiest and most interesting subjects I've found. I could kick my own ass for not thinking so at an early age.
Avatar Sun. 8/2/15 11:55pm HollyT:

a propos of nothing, did you (Dave, or anyone else) see that Max's Kansas City's facade was rebuilt yesterday around the corner from the old Max's (at 19th and Park I believe). Apparently they are shooting for an upcoming Scorsese tv series.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/2/15 11:56pm JakeGould:

What’s a propos?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/2/15 11:57pm steve:
