Greetings, Dr. Beard! What's your specialty?
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: Thanks for the tracklist -- and sorry, all, that I'm being too lazy to type it out as the cassette plays. Don't think this one is on discogs -- where did you find the tracklist?
  Tue. 7/28/15 12:27pm Dr. Beard:

<From Montreal Canada - Artist of Weird. stuff... punk and stuff like Fortunata
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 12:27pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey Tony. I have no idea why the show started three minutes late. The scheduler in the software is set for 12pm (ET) as always. I can only think that there was some weird blip that occurred at noon that made the ghost in the machine belch.

@Peter Nelson
So Tony's show is going to run three minutes late. Please listen for the end of his show and connect to the stream accordingly. Apologies for the time weirdness!!

I have to run to the dentist in an hour and will be back to spray you all down with sherry vinegar and cumin dust.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 7/28/15 12:28pm Carmichael:

Found it here, Tony: rateyourmusic.com...
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 12:29pm Kay:

Just as well about the late start, I was 10 minutes late tuning in.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 12:30pm Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: DUH -- of course! I put that up!!I added the cassette to rateyourmusic and so wrote out the track titles. See, I'm not always so lazy.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 12:31pm Tony Coulter:

Hey there, Kay!!
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 12:38pm Tony Coulter:

Apologies for the background squeakiness. You'd be squeaky too if you were as old as this cassette -- 130 in human years.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 12:40pm Tony Coulter:

He's sounding a bit like Lennon here, no? Is it the accent?
  Tue. 7/28/15 12:45pm Dean:

Sounds like Lennon when he doesn't sound like Eric Carmen or Russel Mael. Maybe Rich Little was in the band?
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 12:45pm Ozzy Skateboard:

that and the doubling effect
  Tue. 7/28/15 12:46pm Dean:

We'll know for sure if he ends up sounding like Sammy Davis, Jr.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 12:48pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Dean!
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 12:49pm Tony Coulter:

OK, hold on to your socks -- things are going to get a lot weirder now.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 12:53pm Rich in Washington:

maybe the extra second inserted into the NBS time scale recently screwed up the scheduler software.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 12:54pm Tony Coulter:

Could be!
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 12:57pm Peter Nelson:

This is a great band! I vaguely remember the name.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 12:59pm Tony Coulter:

Yes -- they are totally fab! There's a double-7" which is easier to find. FMU has a copy of that -- not that that does you any good.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:00pm Tony Coulter:

Plus, there's stuff under the Amos & Sara name -- like the "Go Home Soldier" 12". Amos has the weirdest, greatest take on dub.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:02pm Tony Coulter:

Sare later became a professional wrestler in the U.S. Ken Freedman had her on his show, I think -- or at least met her.
  Tue. 7/28/15 1:03pm Dr. Beard:

Good show sir :) Enjoying it.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:03pm Peter Nelson:

This is exactly the kind of stuff that I was into then...I probably heard them on Peel.
A wrestler? Weird!
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:04pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Dr, Beard!

See, I told you this Sara Goes Pop tape cuts off abruptly.

For some unknown reason, a lot of Amos & Sara songs are about the Middle East, Moslems, the PLA, or terrorists. Wonder why?

And here's a message from the ARWS (Advance Radio Warning System): The second "sneak preview" of Peter Nelson's new program, Eclectic Music for Mind and Bodhi, starts immediately following this show. Peter's program will then take a break until late September, when it will kick off officially. Here's the link for the playlist: wfmu.org...

Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:36pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, a question: One way I could start archiving these Tape Hiss shows would be to only play one side of a tape. What think you of that idea?
Avatar    Tue. 7/28/15 1:36pm fleep:

Ah, the first Peter Nelson sneak is now archived, yay and thanks.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:42pm Tony Coulter:

Stick with whole (unarchived) tapes -- or switch to half (archived) tapes? Enquiring minds want to know. Or at least mine does.
Avatar    Tue. 7/28/15 1:45pm Charlie:

I've got half a mind to answer that question.
Avatar    Tue. 7/28/15 1:45pm Charlie:

And since I've only got half a mind, maybe half a tape would do.
Avatar    Tue. 7/28/15 1:46pm Charlie:

I'm kidding actually. It is nice to hear an entire cassette. But then again, hearing half is more than hearing none.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

Charlie! Half a mind is a slightly terrible thing to waste.
Avatar    Tue. 7/28/15 1:48pm Charlie:

On the bright side, it's much easier to waste half a mind.
  Tue. 7/28/15 1:50pm Dr. Beard:

What I the tape is a 4 way split? Does that mean we use a 1/4 of our mind for the whole tape?
Avatar    Tue. 7/28/15 1:50pm listener james from westwood:

Hearing half one week and the other half the next would certainly build a cliffhanger aspect into the show. But I'm the odd duck who kinda likes the concept of appointment, can't-miss-it radio.
Avatar    Tue. 7/28/15 1:53pm Charlie:

Enjoying this cassette very much, btw.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:53pm Tony Coulter:

I like the appointment-radio angle too -- but in the context of FMU, not archiving does sometimes seem a bit perverse.
Avatar    Tue. 7/28/15 1:53pm Guido from Cologne:

Hello Tony!

Looking forward!

Hello there Tony and everyone!

It's nowhere near as vexing as those few who don't use a playlist.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:54pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Guido! Glad you finally got el premium!!
Avatar    Tue. 7/28/15 1:54pm Charlie:

Is it a copyright issue not being allowed to archive an entire release?
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:55pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Vandalism Generator!
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:55pm Tony Coulter:

@ Charlie: Yep, that -- plus the fact that I sometimes play unreleased stuff.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:56pm northguineahills:

I actually believe I've heard of Officer! before.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

@ Charlie: The second issue wouldn't be solved by playing half a tape, of course.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:57pm VANDALISM GENERATOR:

yes James - tried listening to Reggae schoolroom - and bless his cotton socks there is no playlist - and the dj is so stoned - your are not sure what he is saying when he is reading out what he has played - pity its a great show - probably the best reggae show on the radio - real quality records!
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 1:57pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, NGH! Yep, Officer! has a bunch of releases, some on vinyl and/or CD.
  Tue. 7/28/15 1:59pm Dr. Beard:

Has a hint of Syd imho. Someone walked into my office said sounds a bit like paul simon.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:00pm VANDALISM GENERATOR:

talking about copyright - there is a label putting out records of old demo tapes - the label boss received when he worked in a record shop in the early 90s - there is no copyright issue as by their very nature demos are provided by the artist without copyright when they are looking for a record deal.
I doubt the label pays any royalties!
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:00pm Tony Coulter:

Syd, yes, for sure. Paul Simon -- argh ... no, no!
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:02pm Tony Coulter:

@ VANDALISM GENERATOR: Hmm, interesting. Demo tapes do sometimes have copyright symbols on them -- but maybe it's like pretending you have a guard dog when you don't.
Avatar    Tue. 7/28/15 2:03pm Charlie:

I could see this influencing Dan Wilson aka Meadow House.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:04pm Tony Coulter:

Very true!
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:05pm Kay:

V.Generator, trying to find the label you mentioned I found the following blogpost/youtube video: The World’s Worst Demo Tape Songs Sent To Record Labels (www.thatericalper.com...)
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:06pm VANDALISM GENERATOR:

tried chopped herring records!
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:09pm Kay:

t'anks alot
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:09pm Peter Nelson:

Actually, in this country the copyright symbol isn't needed...copyright is understood. It depends on the intent of the distributor. Those demo tapes would be covered, but it might be difficult and expensive in court to establish the intent By giving their music away, it could be suggested that the bands intended free distribution. However, making a profit form those demos is probably illegal.
  Tue. 7/28/15 2:09pm MrFab:

Thanks for that demo link Tony!
And def. better to post one side than none side.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:10pm VANDALISM GENERATOR:

the guy who owns the label chopped herring records was called chubby Grooves when he worked at Fat City records in Manchester UK.

The shop had a label also and specialised in hip hop.
They were looking for artists to feature on the label (called grand central) and must have received thousands of demo tapes from mainly New York hip hop bands.

He is now releasing these demo tapes on vinyl at premium prices!
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

So, this live tape reveals that Hermine can't actually "sing" -- but in your humble servant's opinion her personality more than makes up for it.
  Tue. 7/28/15 2:12pm Dean:

Copyright doesn't have anything to do with the status as demo of a work. "A copyright is created when it is 'fixed' in a copy or phonorecord for the first time." Phonrecord means CDs, LPs, cassettes, etc. http://copyright.gov/circs/circ56.pdf
Avatar    Tue. 7/28/15 2:12pm Guido from Cologne:

Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:12pm Tony Coulter:

Hey MrFab! Thank Kay for that link!

Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:19pm Peter Nelson:

@Guido Wasn't Nico always out of tune?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/28/15 2:20pm PMD:

Hermine rocks. I agree - personality is everything. Ok, so not everything. But still it works here
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:20pm Peter Nelson:

Oh, I got the premium too but haven't listened to it. very excited though.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:23pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, PMD! Hope you enjoy the premium. And thanks to you -- and Guido -- for pledging enough to snag one.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:25pm Peter Nelson:

I'm wondering if Hermine is actually English. Her language is so acurate, so colloquial, maybe she's putting on the accent.
Avatar    Tue. 7/28/15 2:26pm fleep:

I would like to go back in time and offer Hermine a box of bonbons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/28/15 2:26pm PMD:

Germans can speak English well too you know. Ja Ja.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:28pm Tony Coulter:

@ Peter: Nope, she is definitely French. Lived in London for a long time, though.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:28pm Peter Nelson:

Yeah, but foreigners are usually too good, too 'correct'. This sounds like someone who grew up speaking English
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:28pm Peter Nelson:

@Tony Righto. I stand corrected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 7/28/15 2:29pm PMD:

My Puerto Rican friend used to imitate Julia Child. It was the best - her accent layered on top of a fake french accent.

I take it WFMU and GTDS have to pay royalties every time you play the artist!
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:32pm Tony Coulter:

A certain amount gets paid out every year, yes.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:33pm Tony Coulter:

I am blessedly unaware of the details.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:34pm Rich in Washington:

non commercial stations like WFMU pay out royalties through a service called Sound Exchange. Their not-for-profit status is rolled into a smaller fee than commercial radio stations. They are subject to regular audits, but that's about it.
  Tue. 7/28/15 2:34pm MrFab:

This is really funny. Trying not to LOL at work.
Avatar Tue. 7/28/15 2:35pm Rich in Washington:

The streaming side of a radio station pays a yearly fee to cover what's played on the stream, typically.

Hello Tony.
Just tuned into your show at about 1915 gmt (UK) whist having an early tea or dinner if you're English and posh and caught some of what sounded like fairly contemporary Berlin underground Jazz thing goings on.I didn't turn it off and I'm still tuned in.
