FWIW, I believe that the tradition of using an initial in lieu of a first name comes from female authors who didn’t want to write under a pseudonym, but wanted to make sure that their name parsed as male or at least not female. For example, J. K. Rowling…

Avatar 11:05pm

I meant, they're not using the initial to hide the fact that they're women (which I can understand)--they just want to use the initial.

Hmm, Roger Eugene Eno is eleven years younger than Brian. Perhaps their parents had run out of spare names by then.

rw:

for those in the Los Angeles area there's a museum exhibition about Bill Graham (who started the Fillmore):

http://www.skirball.org/exhibitions/bill-graham-and-rock-roll-revolution

The show opens with an apple barrel... "Perhaps the most meaningful item in the exhibition, Kirschner said, is the original apple barrel that greeted guests at the Fillmore with a sign that read, "Take One or Two." Concertgoers came to expect the barrel over the years, but nobody seemed to know why it was there.

The Skirball discovered the answer while researching the show. When Graham was in the French orphanage, he and another child were sent to a neighboring apple orchard to pilfer fruit to feed their hungry friends. It was an experience Graham carried with him his whole life."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm

Yes, Rabbit, that's the original Fillmore Auditorium on Filmore Street. Graham moved the Fillmore organization to the Carousel Ballroom at Market & Van Ness and renamed it The Fillmore West (that's the one that closed in '71). The current Fillmore re-opened many years later.
