Favoriting July 13, 2015: So excited to have AFL kicker Tommy Frevert as our guest! And then, as per usual, he didn't call. + Idiot NFL fireworks mishaps, World Cup parade egos, and old ladies pitching in the MLB.

That song brings up bad memories of the bitter Jackson 5/Osmond Brothers rivalry.

Ahh, Gabe Kaplan’s sad post “Mr. Kotter” poker career.

BriJet :)

All I know is that it takes a lot of endurance to play poker for 12 hour periods :) They have people on hand to offer chair massages for players who would like to pay for that privelege.

And if you do well you get your name with a little American flag next to it (or whatever country you are in) which is pretty cool :)

I do remember this now about Arena football - pretty sure the original rules were literally developed on a cocktail napkin.

This caller is bringing the knowledge :)

I believe that the original game was actually played on ESPN. I think it was Denver vs Chicago. They did sort of a trial 4-team mini season as a test I think.
  6:20pm
JakeGould:

@DanneD: The same can then be said about video game champions like the Donkey Kong champ or when I decide to play Mr. Do at Barcade.
  6:21pm
chalmers:

Gabe Kaplan also hosted a sports-talk radio show post-Kotter.

I remember one gag. When the Knicks hired Pat Riley, he called various men and women around the world with that name. One was a crotchety old guy from Ireland. Kotter ended the call, "See you at the Garden." The guy snapped, "I haven't had a garden in ten years!"

Very few endeavors where you can take on famous professionals on an equal basis. I can't box Mike Tyson. I can't play in the Arena Football League. I can get seated next to the 2006 Player of the Year in a World Series of Poker event. It's cool :)

JakeGould:

@dale: Ooo! Yeah… That guy… Also, if poker is a sport then is chess a sport.
Avatar 6:22pm
Danne D:

@Dale - Yeah Stu Unger is a sad story. If there was a 30 for 30 movie that ESPN wanted to do about Poker, Stu Unger would be a great subject.

No, Danne, the 1st-ever game of Arena football was not televised. It was played with hay bales padding the side walls.

What's the difference between a podcast & streamed-on-demand archives? Is it a technical one or just market positioning?

  6:33pm
JakeGould:

@ListenerRobert: Podcasts are downloadable and can be heard whenever you want. Streaming on demand is just that: You need an active connection to listen.
Avatar 6:33pm
Danne D:

@Listener Robert - well maybe I'm thinking more in terms of first Arena League game :)

Anyway I have to hit the road and will listen in the car :) Thanks for taking my call Bronwyn and Jim and have a good night everyone :D

Is it just that the maintainers of a podcast expect you to download the file & play it locally rather than streaming it over the nets?
Avatar 6:34pm
steve:

i believe when they say podcast they're referring to people downloading it through Apple/iTunes
  6:34pm
P-90:

Listener Robert: I think the only difference is that one "streams" and the other "downloads," i.e. comes as a complete file rather than a stream.
  6:35pm
Listener Robert:

Thanks, Jake & P-90. I sort-of guessed while you were writing.
  6:35pm
P-90:

Yes, Jake, I know that attempt at a clarification sucks.
  6:36pm
Listener Robert:

Does downloading a MP3 or other format allow for greater file compression than streaming? Does it make more efficient use of bandwidth, server, or player resources?

I sent Antonio Gates a great card (the front said "Bad Ass Motherfucker") last year, and see how he repaid me? 4-game suspension. !@#!@#@#$ Chargers.
  6:38pm
JakeGould:

FWIW, Apple and other companies are obsessed with getting folks to stream because streaming requires more data and overages on data plans is the way mobile providers make money. The economic model basically implies downloading real MP3s is “old fashioned” when it really isn’t. It’s more efficient to download. They want you to be inefficient to “improve” mobile revenues.
Avatar 6:39pm
steve:

click the "podcast" or "Podcast Central page" link on the left side of any page... its referring to people subscribing through iTunes or other dedicated podcast-listening apps. also when you subscribe to a podcast you download, not stream.
  6:39pm
JakeGould:

The best way to understand it is this: Well, if MP3s destroyed the business model of selling CDs, LPs and Tapes then we need to find a new “container” to bill on. And that new container is bandwidth. The fact all my MP3s are on my hard drive is “old fashioned” to many people nowadays.

Listener Robert:

Would we be saving WFMU money if we downloaded archived files instead of having them streamed, in that Auricle would need to invest less in resources?
  6:42pm
JakeGould:

@ListenerRobert: Maybe that theoretically saves money, but I believe it’s negligible. I do believe that the app starting up with an immediate stereo stream though is a waste of bandwidth. It would be nice if the app gave options to not stream immediately on launch or choose the mono stream instead. Some of us listen through the speakers on our phones which are mono anyway.

Listener Robert:

I'm such a cheapskate (& broke) using old equipment that I'm always looking at how to save everybody's resources. I used to download because my audio modem cx was too slow for streaming, plus would tie up my phone line. Nowadays I only download when the host doesn't offer streaming, or I think I'll really, really want to save that file myself.

You guys are always a little too enthusiastic talking about the end of the show & beginning of the next. With Andy it's great shtick, losing the will to live. But Bronwyn is a great talker as proven in many show formats, & Jim's been a great addition.
  6:58pm
P-90:

@Jake: the FMU IOS app does hav a mono streaming option. I use it on my Ipad, you can see how much more efficient it is by how much more quickly it buffers than the stereo stream.
  6:59pm
Listener Robert:

Speaking of which, the past few days I've had trouble maintaining Flash cx w WFMU streams.
  6:59pm
P-90:

Thanks, Sportsy Folk
  6:59pm
JakeGould:

@P-90: I know it has a mono option. You miss my point. When the app starts up it automatically starts streaming the STEREO stream when all I am saying is there should be an option for the MONO stream to be the default option. Or no automatic streaming on startup.
  7:00pm
P-90:

Gotcha.

Heh...I'm used to command lines in Unix/Linux & MS-DOS where you could specify a parameter like that as you call up the program.
