Good Wednesday all!!
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 9:06am listener james from westwood:

Argh, 54. Awful to hear it. Sorry you endured such a loss. Bad year for bosses; my excellent boss at a previous full-time job passed from a rare cancer in January. She was a preternaturally young 65. Hope these days get easier for you as they progress.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 9:07am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @βrian and @listener james! Thanks for tuning in.

Hello everyone

Hi, @duke!

Hi all.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 9:17am Jeff Golick:

Welcome, good @doctorjazz.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 9:21am Jeff Golick:

This Miles performance is 45 years old.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 9:22am Jeff Golick:

Keith Jarrett had just joined the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/8/15 9:28am doctorjazz:

Nice, Miles sounds really good!
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 9:32am Jeff Golick:

I love how distant the audience sounds. I imagine Miles & Co. on a stage that's about 100 feet high.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 9:34am Jeff Golick:

Fillmore EAST, btw. The record Black Beauty from around this same time was recorded at Fillmore West a little earlier in 1970.

Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 9:53am Jeff Golick:

Ha. Yeah. I sort of imagine that electric band playing in part out of fear.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 9:58am Jeff Golick:

Charlie Haden on bass here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/8/15 10:10am doctorjazz:

The groove on Tribal Ghost, right up my alley.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 10:19am Jeff Golick:

If you enjoy this InVerso duo, the whole record is available, remarkably, as a "name your price" download. Click on the link in the playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/8/15 10:34am Uncle Michael:

I have a fill-in this Friday. Mayuko's Play Vertigo is filling in for me.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 10:37am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @UM! I knew both you and Doug had fill-ins but didn't have the info at hand.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 10:39am Jeff Golick:

Here's that interview with Kikuchi, by Ethan Iverson: dothemath.typepad.com... It's wonderful.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 10:39am listener james from westwood:

Excellent to hear, UM. I dug the hell out of Mayuko's first program. But you shall be missed!
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 10:45am Jeff Golick:

Lot of electric Miles vets on this Kochi cut - Al Foster, Mtume, Dave Liebman, Steve Grossman. I think it's fair to say that Japanese listeners grokked what 70s Miles was up to before the rest of us.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 10:47am Jeff Golick:

...and Reggie Lucas!
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:01am Jeff Golick:

Man, there is not enough time for all the Kikuchi I want to play...
  Wed. 7/8/15 11:04am Dean:

Just tuned in. Worried for a second that we'd lost Kikuchi. He was having health problems recently.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:09am Jeff Golick:

Sorry to tell you this, Dean: www.ecmrecords.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 7/8/15 11:10am Uncle Michael:

Thanks, James.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:11am listener james from westwood:

I spotted and fixed a "miniscule" in proofs just now. Can I go back to bed?
  Wed. 7/8/15 11:13am Dean:

That is sad news. Nice of ECM to report on the story, despite his having made only one studio record for them. I love the Winter & Winter recordings.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:14am Jeff Golick:

That seems fair to me, @ljfw.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:14am Jeff Golick:

Is that the Tethered Moon stuff, @Dean? Don't have most of that, unfortunately.
  Wed. 7/8/15 11:16am Dean:

Yes, Tethered Moon.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:16am Jeff Golick:

Oh, or the Paul Motian at the Vanguard CDs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/8/15 11:17am Jesse K:

hola gents!
Avatar    Wed. 7/8/15 11:17am duke:

Off to a brunch. Who has brunch on a Wednesday morning? Great show. Thanks
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:18am Jeff Golick:

Challah, @Jesse!
  Wed. 7/8/15 11:18am Dean:

Not sure Poo is on the Motian Vanguard releases, all or many of which were originally JMT. I believe the Tethered Moon W&W releases were new on W&W.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:18am Jeff Golick:

Well, it's Sunday Lunch right now, so enjoy, @duke. Always great to see you here.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:19am Jeff Golick:

@Dean: I've cued up those Motian On Broadway volumes; he's on those. Probably won't get to them, though...
  Wed. 7/8/15 11:25am Dean:

@ljfw, Wasn't certain what you'd corrected, presumably the spelling. You don't actually see texts these days in historical minuscules and majuscules, do you?
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:27am Jeff Golick:

Many versions of Dancing Mist here: inconstantsol.blogspot.com...
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:30am Jeff Golick:

Another surprise from that Iverson interview: Herbie Hancock? Kikuchi not a fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/8/15 11:31am northguineahills:

How have I've never heard of Masabumi Kikuchi?
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:33am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @northguineahills! He kept a pretty low profile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/8/15 11:34am doctorjazz:

True, I try to keep up with this stuff, name vaguely familiar. This seems to be in electric Miles territory, nice.
  Wed. 7/8/15 11:35am Dean:

Yep, even though he worked with big shots like Motian and Peacock, inter alia. I forgot that there is one JMT TM record devoted to Kurt Weill tunes. The most perversely fun disk, IMO, is the W&W tribute to Tosca!
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:35am Jeff Golick:

The Inconstant Sol blog, and contributor Nick, have been posting Kikuchi LPs for a while now. It's an incredible resource: inconstantsol.blogspot.com...
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:36am Jeff Golick:

I need to get that Tosca record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/8/15 11:36am northguineahills:

@doctorjazz: I just went through my "On the Corner" sessions box again this weekend, so, this feels so right.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:40am Jeff Golick:

This Hino record has one of the LEAST promising covers you can imagine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/8/15 11:40am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I always say the Complete 'In a Silent Way' sessions was a revelation to me - & this seems pretty much an homage to that - which is fantastic. Filled in the gaps between the Acoustic early 60s Miles & the later Electric Miles - helped me see it as a less abrupt transition (I always liked both phases).
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:42am Jeff Golick:

HEY! Coming up at the top of the hour, it's the Nazario Scenario! See/hear: wfmu.org... - wipe away these blues and sing along with Amanda.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:42am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @Rev Rabbit!
  Wed. 7/8/15 11:43am Dean:

Poo often sings along a la Keith Jarrett.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:44am Jeff Golick:

Yeah that's a problem, @Dean.
  Wed. 7/8/15 11:48am Dean:

For some. I don't let it bother me. It'd be fun to hear "duets" by Kikuchi and Jarrett, exclusively vocal tracks. Phil Minton territory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/8/15 11:49am northguineahills:

@RevRabbit: I have that one as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/8/15 11:55am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I've also mused out loud that 'Bitches Brew' suddenly doesn't seem so 'lonely', & its' influence finally seems acknowledged by many - but listening to such shows as this I think instead I was just in the dark myself about who was picking up on Electric Miles the whole time...
  Wed. 7/8/15 11:58am Dean:

Henry Kaiser & Wadada Leo Smith's Yo Miles! project extends the legacy.
Avatar Wed. 7/8/15 11:59am listener james from westwood:

Splendid stuff, Jeff! Thanks muchly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/8/15 12:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 7/8/15 12:00pm northguineahills:
