This is like managing a forest. I thought WFMU was having technical difficulties, but now that I shut down the yes album I see that there is very minimal ambient music that has probably been going for some time. Well, we all have our own tastes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/29/15 3:22am pacific standard simon:

Who knew a listener could be so, uh, overwhelmed by a Yes record?

Mon. 6/29/15 3:35am can't lose with this track:

Thanks for explaining. I checked it out, Missouri seemed a lot cooler in those days, though I suppose that is not uncommon relative to now. I had a friend that went to WUSTL, there wasn't anything like that in missouri when I was there. Though I speak from very limited experience, you can kinda get the feel of a place fairly quickly, as I have learned from places I have been back to a bunch of times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/29/15 3:36am pacific standard simon:

Jam bands were more fun back in the day.

I'm not gonna cheat and look it up on the internet, I will say it reminds me of the wire, which I can tolerate more than country and western or cough syrup rap, but isn't my fave.
  Mon. 6/29/15 3:43am yeah:

@can't lose - good guess...same time period, similar vocal sound to Wire, but Wire don't have jammy guitar solos.

Funny how you mention lulzsec.
Mon. 6/29/15 3:52am can't lose with this track:

I was reading a lot about the shit that was going down a little while back with occupy wall street and how that all went to shit like most decent things do. The fact that wfmu is playing these great throwback jams is part of why they are a salve to anyone with sensitivity. god bless.

Mon. 6/29/15 3:57am can't lose with this track:

See I think this sort of thing is what kept prog rock from having more exposure. A lot of it is quite plodding, good term. The trick is to keep it interesting. Similar to classic or jazz or other things they cited as influences. Hey, it's a high bar.
  Mon. 6/29/15 3:58am yeah:

Totally agree. This part's cool.
Mon. 6/29/15 3:59am can't lose with this track:

totally. a weird mix of prog and punk. BTW the autocorrect keeps turning "prog" into prig or prick. lol.
Avatar Mon. 6/29/15 3:59am Jeff Conklin:

This was a garage band from Buffalo with no illusions of "success". Just jamming for the hell of it. Not everything needs exposure.
  Mon. 6/29/15 3:59am Gay Married:

Plodding is a government conspiracy of men.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/29/15 4:00am pacific standard simon:

Makes me feel like a deuce, but sometimes context is important. I have some recording of stuff like this, I love this stuff. Is there some web repository? Just dudes with some sort of musical sense jamming, I mean you would probably edit all this down and re do it to be successful commercially but I am totally into this raw stuff. I guess just after some of the more commercial tracks earlier in the set i was thrown off. Now I feel like a bad listener.

Mon. 6/29/15 4:07am can't lose with this track:

No, I mean something curated for the modern short attention span. I have been online since 1990, I wouldn't still be listening to WFMU if they didn't save me mad time and keep me in the loop. Never mind, I was just mentally jerking off. great set, no complaints, please don't anyone think I'm complaining :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/29/15 4:09am pacific standard simon:

Hey, I'm not in Seattle -- it's Bainbridge Island, WA!
Mon. 6/29/15 4:10am can't lose with this track:

hey... I had a job on bainbridge island for a bit, teaching art. No lie. What do you do? WFMU continues to deliver the synchronicity, like always. I also dated a girl that was a barista or something, one of those northwest fairy goddesses. Sucked for me. But hey, the ferry was great, with the seagulls.

Port Townsend is way cooler than Bainbridge, but I'd need to drive to live there. And to answer your earlier question, I'm a baker, which accounts for these stupid hours.

At one point I overed 100 space ball computer controllers. If that was a sucker brothers reference. The space ball never really caught on and that was how I was able to buy 100 of them for $1 each from a dot com cad firm liquidation in the early2000s.

the autocorrect is killing me here big time. ZUCKER brothers, the dudes that did the airplane movies, and the sci fi parody space balls. WFMU, fire whoever you got to do your friggin autocorrect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/29/15 5:07am pacific standard simon:

Your auto-correct is your own responsibility. Don't blame it on the station.

Don Cherry is sort of a household god around my house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/29/15 5:21am pacific standard simon:

This sounds like "Moonlight Mile".

Any thoughts on who was the last band/person to use the rock n roll flute? Jethro tull is my bet but I have to admit I slept on don cherry. Around my house was a suburban musical drougb, thank god I made it this far. Ever heard of Eddie Money? I was surprised to hear Yes "yours is no disgrace" earlier tonight on FMU..

There's a popular modern Canadian metal band with flute as the lead instrument I believe

man, thank god JM in the AM isn't about to go on. That was a bad part of insomnia. On the other hand now you guys are facilitating..
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/29/15 5:33am pacific standard simon:

I have no idea. Certainly Jethro Tull is the biggest of the "rock n roll". Probably some prog bands in the '70 ("Hocus Pocus" by Focus) too. Rahsaan Roland Kirk for teh JAZZ, like Cherry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/29/15 5:34am pacific standard simon:

Zappa also.

JM in the AM was like last call at a bar.. time to go. I guess if you have an on the air radio you still pick it up? I recall it was always a fundraising whale, which no doubt is why it was around, but I loved how they cut it off from the web stream. Real shit! I had a I had a bootleg of some rhino record with hocus pocus and highway star and some other AM gold. I apologize for being an annoying jerk, digging your show and will check out that thing I can't spell.. kk
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/29/15 5:39am pacific standard simon:

Don't disrespect JM in the AM. I don't know how the station would be here without it.

good point, zappa. Why doesn't he get more play on wfmu? Too mainstream? I'm not disrespecting it, I guet that it pays the bills, I just love that I am not about to hear it. Nothing but love. I can't tell you how many times I listened through that show when I was way more wasted than I am now, and it's like wow, what a world. Like most things on WFMU! But I still would probably prefer whatever other weirdness is in store. Almost certain. ;)

Mellotron flute - Eric Drew Feldman on Doc at the radar Station by Beefheart. Thanks for all the great music this morning, Jeff!

there aren't as many websites as there used to be that have a live chat, it was actually kind of a precursor to social media like having a live call-in to a radio show, cool to trace the evolution. But I do feel like the number of both web and radio shows with a live common has decreased over all. Part of the plan. FMU continues to stand against the tide though.

This whole friggin website is so 90s, but it actually still works. Some MilSpec shit. Now I am definitely a government agent ;)

Thanks Jeff. Happy to have caught the last hour, after missing quite a few episodes of your show. Loved the Don Cherry. A shame I missed the Dead, but I'll hopefully be watching the final Soldier Field show via satellite in a cinema in Brighton. RIP Chris Squire.
