Agree about arts funding, I know a spiral goes both ways but nowadays it tends to follow gravity.

hey, Brian. a few years back the Australian govt sent sporting equipment to New Guinea as part of aid package. in their wisdom, they decided to send cricket sets, even though PNG kids love basketball and rugby league. they decided to use the stumps as spears and the bats as clubs. there's a lesson there!

God I thought you were working up to "Strange Fruit." I saw Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series, now on view at MoMA, yesterday morning, and in among the supplemental art rooms was a large video projection of Billie singing "Strange Fruit." There were four of us in the small room; I think we all held our breath for the duration of the song.

The auto-play bullshit is...is BULLSHIT! Also have to wonder about anyone who puts a music autoplay dingus on his tumblr set-up, or anywhere else similar, so any post you open starts one of about eight particular songs. You can pause it...but who wants to keep doing that? Especially if you're streaming other CHOSEN audio at the time?

My wife Jessie and I had a spectacular vacay at Ocracoke many years ago. Had a huge expanse of beach, as far as we could see in either direction, to ourselves. And this was in July.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:22am Uncle Michael:

I think it would be ludicrous to frame stories about armed conflict between criminal organizations as one would frame stories about the presence of violence as an element of political protest.

But hey, that's just me.

The point I was attempting to make is that the violence in Waco is being covered like a sort "boys will be boys" froo-froo, while the legitimate protests in Baltimore were covered as though they were committed by a bunch of lawless thugs.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:35am Uncle Michael:

I'm not getting that "boys will be boys" hit off of it at all. What I'm getting is an implied question, "why are people so freaked out about some rioting where no one got killed but not so freaked out about a gangland shootout in which nine people died?" I don't find the answer to this implied question very mysterious.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:41am Uncle Michael:

People aren't prepared to deal with the fact that our culture has marginalized and oppressed many people to the point of frustration that culminates in rage. That rage terrifies people because they know that it can, and perhaps even *should be* directed at *them*. It's hard to distance ones' self from the discomfiture that comes from seeing how close to a brink we are and how culpable we are.

When criminals kill each other, that evokes none of that stuff. Much as has been noted for so long; that black on black crime barely gets attention (bloods and crips killing each other over turf...so what?) Other than for the sake of spectacle and a few news cycles, nobody really gives a shit about biker gangs killing each other. *we* are not implicated...or particularly at risk.

The handwringing over the comparative coverage relies on a lot of false equivalency, in my opinion.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:41am Jeff Golick:

Avatar 10:45am d¢ pät:

Not buying that U. Mike. I saw/heard a lot of reactions to Baltimore in the vein of "see? that's what those people do." Rioters were presented as just looters and low-lifes, not oppressed people with pent up rage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:50am Jeff Golick:

Same here, @dc pat. My gmail inbox is very wonky right now.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:50am Uncle Michael:

"That is what those people do" is a great way to shield one's self from examining one's own role in creating the conditions that are being raged against. I saw a lot of the same reaction you describe...from right wing mouthpieces with an agenda. I also saw a lot of recognition that the protests were almost entirely peaceful, that the police overreacted and that there are always a few knuckleheads...who were very possibly provocateurs. Somehow I'm able to recognize that from my distant perch...so the message is a bit more complex than "that's what those people do."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

When would I eat, Jeff Golick? When would I sleep? (I'd still do it, however.)
  10:51am Dean:

Truly, I don't read all that much of a difference between Doug's and UM's takes on the Waco and Baltimore, uh, dust-ups. So, I'll change the subject. It occurred to me this morning that the exemplary band name Holy Modal Rounders applied to a band that was none of those things.

We're in Buxton, on the Banks. Just on inlet up from Ocracoke. Six miles of white sand beach, protected as a wildlife refuge just steps from our surprisingly affordable room. It's a magical, restorative place, just one good storm from disappearing into the sea. We try to come for a week each year. Reading, body surfing, fish sandwiches, and gritty shorts. Off to climb a lighthouse now. Thanks for the lovely morning soundtrack and conversation.

Avatar 11:08am still b/p:

A young Dan Ackroyd to Hell's Angels who came up to SNL offices to bitch and menace after the show used fake Angel colors in a sketch: "You guys are real men," he said. "Real, true Americans. We really respect you. You guys are great."

I still haven't fully cleaned out the layer of mental filth I built up after reading Hunter S. Thompson's book.
Avatar 11:12am northguineahills:

Holy crappers, I have this Joe Gibbs comp. I got it in Miami b/c I was disappointed I couldn't find any music in Jamaica NYE 2000.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:13am Andrew Waterloo:

I imagining Canadian Dan Ackroyd saying that in his Joe Friday voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

You should have gone to Jamaica, Queens, northguineahills!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:17am Jeff Golick:

What does he mean by "Touch Her Where She Want It Most?"
Avatar 11:19am Carmichael:

Hello Doug and Memorial day weekenders. Cry on a grave, laugh at a party.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:19am Gary:

Whoa, this Brenda Ray -- great voice! I need to Google her
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:20am Brian in UK:

@Jeff give me the crayons, I will draw you a picture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

Laughingcrying with ya, Carmichael!

@Jeff Golick
If you want to blush, change it to "moist."

I gave my friend a flat little human figure carved out of bone (cow bone? More cow bone!) to bury for a few hours in the Ocracoke sand in some frivolous-ritualistic-vicarious-vagabondy-gesture-as-shore-souvenir concept. She agreed, with the warning that she might not remember to dig it back up and carry it home.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:21am Brian in UK:

She wants to get her hands on my watermelon what i just purchased.
  11:26am Marie:

Love that bed music, Doug. Great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

I'm so glad, Marie! Hello!

Animal label logos are great - one of the best being the Filet-of-Soul label with the fish skeleton logo

Always appreciate hearing vintage reggae. I'm in the process of downloading what will turn out to be about 11,500 A and B sides of vintage reggae from Usenet (which isn't well known these days). They will wind their way towards our dear host eventually.

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Uncle Michael is a cool uncle. Not the creepy kind who pulls quarters out of your ear while putting his hand on your butt. He's the kind of uncle who gives you your first joint and tells you your parents are uptight. He also does a slamming radio show. It's up next here on the Drummer Stream. Playlist page here: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

SO many rare and brilliant vintage reggae tracks in your dear host's collection have come from Listener Hugo. It's fairly miraculous, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Webhamster Henry:

He's the uncle flipping through the LPs in the back of the Salvation Army. OH WAIT! I'M THAT UNCLE!

Not "Wade in the Water"?
Avatar 11:40am northguineahills:

Thanks Doug, I've gotta skadoodle!
Avatar 11:40am still b/p:

I bought a 25 cent thrift store LP the other day -- someone else doing Glenn Miller tunes. I bought it for one reason: the vinyl is yellow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

Webhamster Henry, the man who knows so much.

See ya next time, northskaguineadoodle!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:42am Jeff Golick:

And Hugo is > than Doug, by the way. By a wide margin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

Right you are, bobdc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

I was going to talk over this track after my opening set, but got so enamored with it, I wanted to play the whole thing!

Hi. Been quiet this morning, but listening. Thought that was a score -- Doug 1, Listeners 0. Was gonna say it seems kind of the opposite, unless you take the view that everyone wins when Doug's on.

Hug 'n Dugo...the really out-there musical pair to be featured in a Mighty Wind sequel.

An apropos though out-of-period number for the gif scene, given the conductor's mien, might be Quentin's Theme from Dark Shadows, but it would leave most of the orchestra idle.

I derive more pleasure from doing this radio show than should be allowed in nature.

Brian: I downloaded a BBC programme about Viv, but I'm not sure if it was this one. I don't think Stephen Fry was in it. Of course, I do have the various installations of Sir Henry at Rawlinson End from the John Peel sessions on radio 1.
