Hello Drummer man.
Hey ausmanx trying to beat the Kiwis at the Summer game.
Agree about arts funding, I know a spiral goes both ways but nowadays it tends to follow gravity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 9:06am ausmanx:

hey, Brian. a few years back the Australian govt sent sporting equipment to New Guinea as part of aid package. in their wisdom, they decided to send cricket sets, even though PNG kids love basketball and rugby league. they decided to use the stumps as spears and the bats as clubs. there's a lesson there!

Doug, thanks for the reminder, need to get a watermelon and slowly infuse it with a white spirit over the next seven days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 9:09am doca:

It's watermelon season on the Northern Hemisphere, right?
Avatar Fri. 5/22/15 9:09am Jeff Golick:

God I thought you were working up to "Strange Fruit." I saw Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series, now on view at MoMA, yesterday morning, and in among the supplemental art rooms was a large video projection of Billie singing "Strange Fruit." There were four of us in the small room; I think we all held our breath for the duration of the song.

I know I did.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 9:12am doca:

@glenn: Watermelon juice is also good for hot days.
Avatar Fri. 5/22/15 9:13am Frank from VT:

I once tried to grow watermelon. It only set one fruit. As soon as it got as big as a cantaloupe, a red squirrel ate it. ***sigh***

@Frank: You haven't watermelon juice in the US? Strange, but you can put it on the mixer and it gets good too.
@Brian: Great trip, lots of good food, good music, the record fair, and seeing a friend a long time I didn't see. Though I found NYC very different from what I expected in the first couple of days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 9:26am doca:

It will betray my (lack of) age, but I was a Smashing Pumpkins kind of kid when I was a teenager. Still find them important, for personal reasons.

@Andrew: That's a sentence I wish I could say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/22/15 9:36am Uncle Michael:

There are no seedless watermelons. There are watermelons that mature before the seeds develop fully.

I adore watermelon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 9:36am Andrew Waterloo:

saw him play with Natural Information Society (Josh Abrams) last weekend. Highly recommend his work with Fred Anderson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 9:37am Webhamster Henry:

I concur with doca, blended watermelon with some lime is a great experience. I'm a tea-totaller, but I but alcohol lovers would know what else to put in it.
Avatar Fri. 5/22/15 9:37am glenn:

sheeesh. part of the joy of eating watermelon is spitting the seeds at your older sisters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 9:38am doca:

His work on DKV trio with Ken Vandermark and Kent Kessler is also good, really fun jazz. He has a couple of recordings as a leader, I remember listening to one that was really reggae-inflected
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/22/15 9:39am Andrew Waterloo:

My Drake highlight is an improv duo that he did with Larry Ochs.

The auto-play bullshit is...is BULLSHIT! Also have to wonder about anyone who puts a music autoplay dingus on his tumblr set-up, or anywhere else similar, so any post you open starts one of about eight particular songs. You can pause it...but who wants to keep doing that? Especially if you're streaming other CHOSEN audio at the time?

I like also how the second amendment turns out to be something that is only for white men. I mean really, how many black people are going to try "open carry?" "Open carry" in black neighborhoods means "police target."

My wife Jessie and I had a spectacular vacay at Ocracoke many years ago. Had a huge expanse of beach, as far as we could see in either direction, to ourselves. And this was in July.

I think it would be ludicrous to frame stories about armed conflict between criminal organizations as one would frame stories about the presence of violence as an element of political protest.

But hey, that's just me.

@Uncle Michael
The point I was attempting to make is that the violence in Waco is being covered like a sort "boys will be boys" froo-froo, while the legitimate protests in Baltimore were covered as though they were committed by a bunch of lawless thugs.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/22/15 10:35am Uncle Michael:

I'm not getting that "boys will be boys" hit off of it at all. What I'm getting is an implied question, "why are people so freaked out about some rioting where no one got killed but not so freaked out about a gangland shootout in which nine people died?" I don't find the answer to this implied question very mysterious.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/22/15 10:41am Uncle Michael:

People aren't prepared to deal with the fact that our culture has marginalized and oppressed many people to the point of frustration that culminates in rage. That rage terrifies people because they know that it can, and perhaps even *should be* directed at *them*. It's hard to distance ones' self from the discomfiture that comes from seeing how close to a brink we are and how culpable we are.

When criminals kill each other, that evokes none of that stuff. Much as has been noted for so long; that black on black crime barely gets attention (bloods and crips killing each other over turf...so what?) Other than for the sake of spectacle and a few news cycles, nobody really gives a shit about biker gangs killing each other. *we* are not implicated...or particularly at risk.

The handwringing over the comparative coverage relies on a lot of false equivalency, in my opinion.

An album with Piazzolla and Borges called El Tango. Not definitive or anything.

Hey there, northguineahills! Things go better with Ocracoke.

The Piazolla/Borges record really should have been called, "Se Necesitan Dos."

Not buying that U. Mike. I saw/heard a lot of reactions to Baltimore in the vein of "see? that's what those people do." Rioters were presented as just looters and low-lifes, not oppressed people with pent up rage.
Avatar Fri. 5/22/15 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

It is my show and you are wrong, Uncle Michael.

Same here, @dc pat. My gmail inbox is very wonky right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/22/15 10:50am Uncle Michael:

"That is what those people do" is a great way to shield one's self from examining one's own role in creating the conditions that are being raged against. I saw a lot of the same reaction you describe...from right wing mouthpieces with an agenda. I also saw a lot of recognition that the protests were almost entirely peaceful, that the police overreacted and that there are always a few knuckleheads...who were very possibly provocateurs. Somehow I'm able to recognize that from my distant perch...so the message is a bit more complex than "that's what those people do."
Avatar Fri. 5/22/15 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

When would I eat, Jeff Golick? When would I sleep? (I'd still do it, however.)

Truly, I don't read all that much of a difference between Doug's and UM's takes on the Waco and Baltimore, uh, dust-ups. So, I'll change the subject. It occurred to me this morning that the exemplary band name Holy Modal Rounders applied to a band that was none of those things.
Avatar Fri. 5/22/15 10:56am Jeff Golick:

Jaga Jazzist should cut an album called Jaga Jazzist Raga Jazz.

We're in Buxton, on the Banks. Just on inlet up from Ocracoke. Six miles of white sand beach, protected as a wildlife refuge just steps from our surprisingly affordable room. It's a magical, restorative place, just one good storm from disappearing into the sea. We try to come for a week each year. Reading, body surfing, fish sandwiches, and gritty shorts. Off to climb a lighthouse now. Thanks for the lovely morning soundtrack and conversation.
Avatar Fri. 5/22/15 11:03am d¢ pät:

Well, yeah definitely more complex but there are those that only see that one level and also think the Waco bikers are cool somehow.

I gave my friend a flat little human figure carved out of bone (cow bone? More cow bone!) to bury for a few hours in the Ocracoke sand in some frivolous-ritualistic-vicarious-vagabondy-gesture-as-shore-souvenir concept.
