Mysteries abound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Doug Schulkind:

I haven't come up with any reasonable explanation yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Doug Schulkind:

I am so ashamed.
Avatar 6:00pm ndbob:

evening Doug Artie everyone!
  6:00pm Maricôt:

What's that about misteries?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Doug Schulkind:

I will explain everything, Maricôt.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Artie Haywire:

Sorry, I meant mistresses. Records are my mistresses.
Avatar 6:02pm Carmichael:

Hiya Doug and the Mysterians.
  6:03pm Maricôt:

Let it go, Doug
  6:03pm Dean:

I learned the hard way, too. Sold so many good LPs and 45s in the '80s both for cash and to make space, but also to prove to myself I hadn't cathected upon them.
  6:04pm Dean:

Ain't anti-Tina tain, Nita.
  6:05pm Jeff g. out:

Not the Mighty Mekons??!!!?¿¡
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

My wife and I left so many books behind in Brooklyn when we moved to Pittsburgh. We feel stupid stupid stupid about it every single day.
Avatar 6:05pm ndbob:

I've gotten rid of all my vinyl a couple times - some things I really miss - but the world of mp3s has made that easier
  6:06pm Jeff g. out:

Ps. Mekons touring No. America soon think...
Avatar 6:07pm Carmichael:

"cathected". Nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
Reading that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

@Jeff g. out
Love the Mekons. Every last flammable ounce of them.
  6:07pm Dean:

And then there's the stuff I almost unloaded, but didn't. Completely random mix of stuff, which tells me I have in fact cathected upon them: Supertramp's "Crime of the Century" in the Mobile Fidelity box, Beatles bootlegs, an EP of Der Plan, tons of oddball vocal recitals...
  6:08pm Jeff g. out:

Our Brooklyn block is planning a big stoop sale this weekend and I will definitely be pulling some CDs to get rid of... (sniff)
  6:08pm Maricôt:

Throw a farewell party to the loved belongings that are no longer close to you, breathe, accept and love the ones you own.
Avatar 6:08pm Carmichael:

Hey! Dead Dog's Daniel Johnston song.
Avatar 6:08pm Flash Strap:

Had a yardsale a few moths back, tried to sell all sorts of our stuff to make some cash. The only things that sold were records, no one showed up but records guys for some reason. Made five hundo and didn't lose a single record that I'll miss, somehow. The only book that sold, I regret every damn day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Doug Schulkind:

Oh no no no, Maricôt, my dear. Not records. Not ever records. Unless you have to. I mean, who am I to judge? I judge only myself and I find myself guilty.

Heya Carmichael, hoo-ha, Flash Strap!
  6:10pm Jeff g. out and about:

App truncating my "
  6:11pm Maricôt:

I've never owned a vinyl. I don't know the feeling. I'm a torrent gal.
Avatar 6:12pm Carmichael:

Buy some vinyl, Maricot. Touch it, love it! Oh, and get a turntable.
  6:13pm Dean:

Only three of Kübler-Ross's stages of grief apply to lost vinyl: anger, bargaining, and depression. There's never denial, never acceptance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

@Maricot
Wow. Vinyl is like a puppy that licks the inside of your ears.
Avatar 6:14pm hyde:

man, I sold LOTS of my blues and jazz when I was a bit of a punk rocker. I had all sorts of great free jazz stuff on Delmark and the like that is now worth a frikking mint. Some of them I've never even found mp3 files for. What the HELL was I thinking?

Avatar 6:17pm Carmichael:

No Jeff, I found that out the hard way. It truncates the rest of your message. I tried to talk about Guns & Roses and couldn't get past the Guns.
Avatar 6:17pm hyde:

on the bright side, I did also sell my Oregon and Billy Cobham LPs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Doug Schulkind:

Some of the records I loathed the most at 20 I love the most now. Do not trust your current tastes and preferences. They will change.

@Maricôt
I long ago decided to never get in the vinyl vs. CD argument. I have my own personal view, but my my main thought is I'd rather be listening to something, anything than having a silly argument about it.

@hyde
You see, I would be right there with you, but I but when I turn 72, I will fall head over heels for Oregon.
  6:18pm Jeff g. waiting on line at Haagen Dazs*:

@Carmichael: I'll alert the authorities!

Also asterisks, it seems --

I hoped you're not too Dazsed and confused to present The Magic Hour tomorrow morning — 9-10am (ET) — right here on the Drummer Stream!

Hey, LA Times, today: http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow/la-sp-sn-yogi-berra-turns-90-quotes-20150512-story.html
Avatar 6:23pm hyde:

@Doug heh, it's possible. but it's been 30 years, and there sure aren't too many of those fusion-y records in that sale that I have sought out again. Maybe some day Ralph Towner and I can reconcile. I have come back to the Mahavishnu Orchestra, after all.
Avatar 6:25pm Flash Strap:

Audiophilic arguments for vinyl notwithstanding (and being as flawed as they are), the key to vinyl-love is the fact that no other format is as imbued with the aura of the artifact. The music will speak for itself in any decent format, but the record argues for itself as a thing unto itself more than anything else.
  6:27pm Maricôt:

I got it. I'm a skeptic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Doug Schulkind:

Flash Strap, I love you.
  6:28pm Jeff g. enjoying an ice cream cone:

@Doug: I'll be fully sugared.
Avatar 6:30pm Flash Strap:

Love is a two-way street my fellow monk of the sacred black circle
Avatar 6:31pm Flash Strap:

This set has got me at attention, by the way. Loving it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Doug Schulkind:

Love the music. Hate the deejay that almost sold it.
Avatar 6:34pm Flash Strap:

how's the rest of Terry Dame's Electric Junkyard Gamelan ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Doug Schulkind:

@hyde
If I could play Mel Tormé on the show, I could play Oregon. I mean, really, what the hell is the difference?
Avatar 6:36pm Flash Strap:

heh, the velvet fog. I have a soft spot for the guy
  6:36pm Jeff g.:

@Doug: about ten pounds?
Avatar 6:36pm hyde:

the difference is, Mel Torme is still wayyyy better'n Boregon!

and you realize, of course, that this show theme means I am now lamenting about selling my Shakti and Air records, Crap and that Hound Dog Taylor and Mississippi Fred McDowell. Oh, and Two Sevens Clash by Culture. ARGH
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Doug Schulkind:

@Flash Strap
I must come clean. I never even listened to this Terry Dame record (or his other one) since the day Terry sent them to me in the mail—more than 10 years ago. I was kind of repulsed by the idea and I just resisted. it turns out that the only repulsive thing is me. The music is lovely.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Doug Schulkind:

I probably should have pronounced it bahsssss holes, but I didn't. I'm terrible awful rotten.
Avatar 6:49pm Carmichael:

More than a little nod to Spoonful in the guitar line.
Avatar 6:51pm Flash Strap:

Very similar to "Primitive" from whichever Nuggets
Avatar 6:52pm Flash Strap:

this is BONKERS. can't believe I've never heard this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Doug Schulkind:

I've got 13 more Divine cuts here, Flash Strap. But only 7 minutes left.
Avatar 6:56pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar 6:56pm Flash Strap:

seriously
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Doug Schulkind:

@hyde
Dick Hyman is from Oregon! Isn't that ironic!
Avatar 6:58pm hyde:

ha, figures! thanks for the tunez!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Doug Schulkind:

My pleazure! (Your seizure.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Doug Schulkind:

I wish you all Dazs and Dazs and Dazs of Haagen!
  12:39pm Listener Gregory:

Doug, please take this as a compliment: I think your first impulse to sell these disks was correct! Don't second-guess yourself. Well, at least don't go beyond third-guessing. I've been through fourth-guessing, and it's brutal.
