hallo, frowskateers! what did you learn this week?
Avatar 12:09am
sanitariumhill:

This is a great song You're Dreaming
Avatar 12:11am

I learned to corn my own beef
  12:13am
nate:

I learned that the eagles could be difficult to work with
  12:14am
P-90:

whoah! it's Frow! whazzup, Bro?
wait, I mean:
WOW! it's Frow! whazzup now?
Avatar 12:15am
sanitariumhill:

@nate the eagles are tough but the beef was easy
  12:17am
P-90:

I learned that every time this show comes on, I remember when it was on Sunday nights and when Gaylord would announce that it was coming up, he always sounded skeptical about the pronunciation of the name, never seemed to get used to it.
  12:24am
nate:

Pertaining to the Red Rhodes song from last week, I learned that steel guitar music vendors are still living in the late 90s with their website designs

awesome set so far!!!!!!

Enjoying the music jj

I learned that the women who work in the preservation lab at the New York Public Library wear white lab coats.
  12:29am
rw:

sanitariumhill, how do you corn beef?
Avatar 12:30am
sanitariumhill:

@rw You place a brisket in a brine of salt and spices for 5 to ten days.
  12:35am
JakeGould:

Corn this beef.
  12:37am
rw:

Sounds easy. After a few days I'd probably forget about it though. How'd it turn out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37am
coelacanth:

olá Jesse and Frows,and others!

i learned this week that "frow" in this context is a reference to a mis-spelling of "fro"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38am
jj.:

ha, did you learn that by listening to the Marathon archive or did you learn it elsewhere?
  12:40am
JakeGould:

@jj.: Yeah, I remember that from a show a few weeks back. You were DJing something and your choices weren’t going over that well and someone slipped you a note: “Yo! Fro!”
  12:40am
wendy del formaggio:

I'm glad I'm still awake so I can tune in. This is a great coupla sets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40am
coelacanth:

i listened to your marathon show. Great story!
Avatar 12:42am
sanitariumhill:

@rw It was delicious. I made corned beef hash with the leftovers tonight.
  12:45am
JakeGould:

@sanitariumhill: Seriously, I envy someone who does that to meat.
  12:46am
P-90:

I heard that "origin story" during the marathon too. I just always remeber Gaylord pausing almost imperceptibly before saying Frow Show, like he wanted to be sure he was using the correct pronunciation. He thought at first that "Frow" probably rhymed with "Show". Perfectly reasonable, just wrong.
  12:47am
nate:

If you are in the mood for learning, do a search for the essay "coming in like El Niño" by Jeremy Lavine, as well as the companion piece "lightning!!!". this music makes a good backdrop
Avatar 12:48am
sanitariumhill:

You corn it with salt, saltpeter, brown sugar, cinnamon stick, mustard seeds, black peppercorns, cloves, allspice berries, juniper berries, crushed bay leaves, and ginger
  12:53am
JakeGould:

@sanitariumhill: Neat! Any proportions you go? Or just basically like one tablespoon—or 1/4 cup—each?
Avatar 12:55am
sanitariumhill:

@Jake Just search for Alton Brown's corning your own beef recipe and I used 1 cup Morton Tender Quick
Avatar 12:57am
sanitariumhill:

and I added coriander

Was that last song about 37 minutes long or did it just stretch my imagination.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04am

little of both. it's been about 37 minutes over 4 pieces of music segued into one another. oregon's been going since just before midnight. swimming in bengal was the 20 minutes before that...

No cumin?
  1:08am
rw:

Hmmm... I just learned that saltpeter does not curb the male sex drive.
Avatar 1:10am
sanitariumhill:

ie. No cumin. The myth is that saltpeter causes impotence.
  1:13am
P-90:

No cumin! And coriander is key! Was it really not in the recipe? This discussion is making me very hungry for a corned beef sandwich on seeded rye. With a little brown mustard.
Avatar 1:14am
sanitariumhill:

The seeded rye is key. Tomorrow I'm making that rye and reubens to finish it up.
Avatar 1:15am
sanitariumhill:

@P-90 coriander was not in the recipe.

This week I learned that the prevalence of latex condoms is a complicated situation. (Slate had a surprisingly enjoyable longform piece about the situation.)

Knile, My grandfather used to work at the Chicago Water District. He said they clogged up the works there.

sanitariumhill, No. Robert.
Avatar 1:30am
Knile:

@sanitariumhill I can't do it justice at this hour/mindstate but a lot of it boils down to whether condoms that felt better (e.g. lambskin) would be just as effective. The research was fuzzily done & led to strong policy & cultural norms, but maybe non-latex alternatives are the way to go, in terms of safety.
Avatar 1:33am
sanitariumhill:

When I was at Pratt I used to use those NYC condoms. Broke all the time

Avatar 1:38am

I. Bridges' photography is also worth checking out, he's been doing it for a while and has a style, not a dabbler.

yeah, i stumbled on a mini show of the dude's photography at the lincoln center movie theater a few years ago. nice stuff. still scared of his C&W band, though.
  1:54am
rw:

P-90, If I remember correctly that camera has a lens that swivels on an axis to get that sweeping panorama. It's called a Widelux.
  1:55am
P-90:

[in Count Floyd voice] Scary, kids, really makes me want to pull the covers over my head, the thought of that Dude's band. Ooh, so scary!

░Ī Ҡ ℰ░::

Fascinating article, @Knile. I had no idea so many people had problems w/latex condoms.
  2:04am
P-90:

rw: yep, it's a Japanese model of what photographers generically term a "pano" or "pan cam." Some have swivel lenses, some have an internal "tilting lens board" mechanism. Bridges has a good eye and a real sense of how exploit the unique properties of that technology.
  2:10am
rw:

P-90, I like the idea that with those cameras there's a time difference between the left and right (top/bottom if vertical) sides of the photos. And I agree, he seems to have a pretty good sense of how to use the thing.
  2:25am
rw:

It's funny, so many of the Bridges photos seem to be taken on movie sets. It creates an odd blend of reality and fiction. (Which is something that's inherent in the photographic process to begin with.)
  2:31am
rw:

Jesse!!

Enjoying the drift.
