Listener ausmanx is probably asleep now (it's 2:36am in Sydney), but just about 3 hours ago, he made the pledge that put WFMU over the top! Thanks, ausmanx, and thanks everyone!!

When he awakens, ausmanx will find sacred nutmeats and ambrosia surrounding his bed. Hope he has slippers.

hi everybody!

Give the Drummer Radio is about $500 from reaching $30,000 for the 2015 Marathon. Needless to say, this is an all-time best! Thanks for helping out and making us tremendously happy and gratified!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, JtotheK!!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:09pm Tony Coulter:

Just occurred to me that there were two similarly named British experimental / post-punk groups releasing music at the same time during the early '80s: Two Daughters and Deux Filles. Don't think they were related, though!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

What Doug said ... and some!!!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

The Two Daughters cassette on now is the one with a photo of two figures (in the pic above the playlist, I mean).
  Tue. 3/24/15 12:12pm Mark Williams:

there's a Zwei Himmlische Toechter outfit out of Germany, but I think you'll find it's a TV show with slightly different aesthetics...
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:13pm listener james from westwood:

How do, happy and celebrating DJs and listeners! Sighs of relief and gratitude for all!!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:13pm Tony Coulter:

Ha! (Hey there, Mark W!)
  Tue. 3/24/15 12:13pm Mark Williams:

this is lovely, Tony. A friend of mine posted this cassette on a blog of his some seven years ago. Haven't heard it since.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

Their LP is also really good.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: What blog was that?
  Tue. 3/24/15 12:17pm Mark Williams:

@Tony - well he took it down, by the looks of it. Had a lot of things in this vein.

Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:18pm Tony Coulter:

Free trip to Marineville to anyone who can ID the LP underneath today's cassettes. I'll even give you a clue: It's related to the band Utopia.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Mark!

I used to avoid playing tapes on this show that had been blogged. Then I decided that since so many links are short-lived, I'd just play 'em regardless.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:21pm glenn:

meetnuts is something you DON'T want to hear.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

Glad to meat you, you nut! (Hola, Glenn!)
  Tue. 3/24/15 12:24pm Mark Williams:

your decision was a good one, Tony. Shame they can't be archived, but still.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:26pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah -- the non-archiving is not my idea. One way around the problem I've thought of, but so far rejected, is to only play one side of a tape -- then I could archive these shows. I MAY start doing that at some point.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:27pm Uncle Michael:

Can you do one side on one show and the other side on a different show??
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:28pm Tony Coulter:

Probably! (You have a tricky legalistic mind, I see!)
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:28pm Uncle Michael:

The urgent double-question-marks were really just a typo. I'm not that wound up yet.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:30pm Tony Coulter:

I never question your question marks.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:35pm still b/p:

Album as placemat is Jean Yves Labat/M. Frog, and designed by Milton Glaser. Offering those bits of fresh-to-me nutmeat only 'cuz I got all web-sniff-snoopity -- and saw many odd things in the process.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:38pm Tony Coulter:

You got it, still b/p!! Your tickets and fresh nutmeat are in the mail!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:41pm Tony Coulter:

Here it be (crappy picture, though): www.discogs.com...
  Tue. 3/24/15 12:52pm Mark Williams:

so many memories come to me when I hear sounds like this from that era. It was a period of mysterious discoveries, one more elusively unknown than the next. Is it my internal date stamp that still makes them sound that way to me now? Other musical interests from my youthful past have started to age and sag quite easily.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:53pm still b/p:

Is he big in Japan, big in Japan? A little bigger clickable here, although some of the wheel of music-notation-by-color is unforgivably covered -- how'm I gonna play that part?
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:56pm Uncle Michael:

Oh, look. A tree's down in the yard! I get to have some chainsaw fun? Whee!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:58pm Tony Coulter:

@ Mark: I suspect some of this stuff that was so obscure back when it came out still sounds fresh because it was more personal in approach and never got assimilated.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:58pm Tony Coulter:

NPR discovers cassettes (and Exiled, by far one of the best record stores in Portland): www.opb.org...

Fire it up, UM!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 12:59pm listener james from westwood:

Grand first entry today, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:01pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, James! The Elektrozange may be a bit more headache-inducing.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:01pm Tony Coulter:

@ Uncle Michael: Don't forget the hockey mask.
  Tue. 3/24/15 1:02pm Mark Williams:

@Tony - I tend to agree with that.

And here we go with some timeless "corrosive boredom" (aetzender Langeweile)!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:03pm Uncle Michael:

Tony, I think you're conflating your slashers.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

Here's the proper cover for this Elektrozange tape: www.discogs.com...

My cover sort of fell part (the glued-on white bits fell off the piece of black paper), so I photographed the insert instead.
  Tue. 3/24/15 1:09pm Mark Williams:

oh, an ADN cassette! I have but the one. Was it quality under one roof with them, Tony?
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:12pm Tony Coulter:

All that I've heard are excellent, for sure. The Comelade thing I'm playing next is also on ADN.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:16pm βrian:

Sometimes I think I ought to pull my Nakamichi dual-cassette deck out of the closet.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:17pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, βrian!

I think of our car as a giant cassette player.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:18pm Tony Coulter:

Not that I play Tape Hiss cassettes in it. The car is for 50 cent Heart cassettes and such.
  Tue. 3/24/15 1:19pm Dean:

50 Cent and Heart made a cassette together with Screaming Lord Such?
  Tue. 3/24/15 1:20pm Mark Williams:

it's when you go jive talking down the street with your boombox, that's when you pull out the Elektrozange, right Tony?
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:21pm βrian:

I still have a very foggy copy of 'The Clash' I could play.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:21pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dean!

@ Mark: I did once try walking down the street with a boombox playing experimental music. The problem was, it was too damn quiet.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:21pm still b/p:

I do NOT want 50 Cent going crazy on you...or me.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:22pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean RE 50 Cent and Heart: The beats are amazing.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:24pm Nutmeat and the Meetcutes:

Greetings and nutmeats to all, esp. Tony!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:25pm Tony Coulter:

Nutmeat Jeff! Greetings!!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:28pm βrian:

My favorite are hazelnut-meats. (Much better than filberts.)
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:36pm V Priceless:

Wow - I remember hearing Pascal Comelade back in the early 80's on WNYC's 'New Sounds', and writing down his name (FMU was not an easy signal to secure back then - 'New Sounds' was my go-to back in the day. Much respect for Mr. Schaefer).
  Tue. 3/24/15 1:38pm Dean:

A Portland question, sort of: I just learned yesterday that the headquarters of a tube amplifier manufacturer, Whammerdyne, are on Alberta NE. My in-laws live walking distance from this neighborhood. Any idea what these things cost?
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

John Schaefer's "New Sounds" book is worth tracking down too. It's in a shelf nearby, in fact.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:39pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: No idea, no. Sorry!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:39pm V Priceless:

@ Tony - will look for it - thanks!
  Tue. 3/24/15 1:39pm Dean:

William Duckworth's Talking Music is a good read, too.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:40pm Tony Coulter:

I can recommend a good place to get donuts on NE Alberta, though.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:40pm βrian:

The internet is a series of tube amplifiers, I read.
  Tue. 3/24/15 1:41pm Dean:

I've probably been to that donut shop.

I'm actually a solid state kinda guy, but those Whammerdyne's look awesome. And hi-fi really is all about how the gear looks, right?
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:45pm Tony Coulter:

Also, who can resist a name like Whammerdyne? Wham, Bam, Whammerdyne.
  Tue. 3/24/15 1:47pm Mark Williams:

Wham, Bam, $13,000 Ma'am.
  Tue. 3/24/15 1:47pm Mark Williams:

or Sir...
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:47pm V Priceless:

@ Dean: I'd be cautious. With a name like that, you could be headed to Looney Tunes territory!
  Tue. 3/24/15 1:49pm Dean:

For reals? Yeah, I kinda figured as much. Truth be told, this is on the low end of the range of gear I am hoping to sell my various limbs and, if need be, children, to acquire. Th-th-th-that's all, folks!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:49pm Doug Schulkind:

Once you squeeze the Internet out of the tube amplifiers, there's no squeezing it back.
  Tue. 3/24/15 1:51pm Dean:

I've rigged my wireless router here for perfect, flossless signals.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:51pm listener james from westwood:

A copyediting conference being held in Portland in 2016 is within walking distance of like 3 doughnut places that look intriguing, plus Powell's. SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY
  Tue. 3/24/15 1:52pm Dean:

Have to head out to run errands with my security deposit. I mean, daughter.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:55pm Tony Coulter:

Godspeed, Dean.

@ Listener James: Heresy, I know, but there are Portland bookstores that are at least as good as Powell's -- and they're cheaper too!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:57pm Tony Coulter:

(a bugbear of mine)
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 1:58pm V Priceless:

good stuff, this Comelade
  Tue. 3/24/15 1:59pm Mark Williams:

just remembered that I was at a party a year ago where someone was playing Comelade's "Paralelo" LP that you mentioned earlier. Had totally forgotten that. Not a particularly bawdy party, that.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

You are certainly getting your money's worth today when it comes to hiss.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:03pm Tony Coulter:

In part because these cassettes are all dolby-free.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:06pm listener james from westwood:

@Tony: I will have to ask for their names should I be able to make it to that conference!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:07pm Tony Coulter:

Do ask! I'm all for donuts and a bag of cheap books.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:12pm Tony Coulter:

I'll just say now that Bingo Books is THE place for cheapskates (like me): www.bingousedbooks.com
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:19pm Tony Coulter:

I like Yann Tiersen as much as the next guy, but I have to say he TOTALLY copped his sound from Pascal Comelade.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:19pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks! Cheap books are my jam. Especially from bookstores I wouldn't normally visit owing to distance. Really hoping I can make it out there next year!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:20pm Tony Coulter:

Give a holler if you do.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:23pm Jeff Golick:

Big laugh there.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:29pm Ike:

Hello hello hello!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:30pm Tony Coulter:

Ike! Ike! Ike! Ahoy there!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:32pm Tony Coulter:

Funny how the live side of this tape has better sound quality than the studio side.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:50pm Tony Coulter:

Here's the bandcamp page for this Rascal Reporters thing: rascalreporters.bandcamp.com...
  Tue. 3/24/15 2:53pm Dean:

Back from errands. Turns out high-end stereo manufacturers are not interested in trade-ins of kids, particularly when their drawers are wet. (The kids, I mean.) Working on an alternate strategy...
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:54pm V Priceless:

fab show, Tony! Thanks!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:55pm Tony Coulter:

My pleasure, VP!
  Tue. 3/24/15 2:55pm Mark Williams:

digging these Rascals, Tony. It's awkwardly smooth. And then not.
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:56pm Tony Coulter:

I'll be taking next week off -- so see you all in 2 weeks!! THANKS AGAIN, EVERYONE, FOR MAKING THE MARATHON A WHOPPING SUCCESS!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:56pm Uncle Michael:

Really what the virtual doctor oredered for me today, Tony...thank you!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:57pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:58pm listener james from westwood:

1.2 million thanks, Tony! Enjoy the break!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:58pm JtotheK:

Great show, thanks!
Avatar Tue. 3/24/15 2:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Great show, indeed!
