Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 9:39am doca:

@Doug: It is really difficult to understand it, lots of slang and regional accent. When I catch the archives I'll listen to it with more attention.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 9:39am Doug Schulkind:

I will write your title on a ping-pong ball and throw it in the lottery machine, Listener James!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 9:42am annie:

my own personal mental slow-motion fireworks
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 9:44am doca:

@Doug: It is part of those kind of challenges between singers/players. In Northeastern Brazil it is related to the tradition of the "repentistas", which is improvised and sung storytelling. In South Brazil (where I live) it is more related to the pajador (payador, in Spanish) thing. But both are duels around guitar playing. The "novelty" thing is not so much about being funny but around "dissing" the other guy. (The same kind of music exists in a lot of other places, of course).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 9:44am Andrew Waterloo:

May as well pardon our English while we're at it.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 9:46am Jeff Golick:

The "dozens" aspect of that Brazilian thing came through pretty loud and clear.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Interesting. I have heard some amazing music like what you are describing, with rapid-fire back-and-forth almost freestyle rapping between two vocalists.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 9:49am Flash Strap:

there's some really good calypso in that vein
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

The artists I am thinking of who perform this style are Geraldo Mousinho e Cachimbinho. Amazing stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 9:50am doca:

@Doug: Yeah it is very traditional and folkloric in Brazil. Portuguese wikipedia says it comes from the Middle Ages. I wonder if it is still exits in Portugal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 9:50am doca:

@Doug: Never heard of neither of them. I'll have a look!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 9:50am βrian:

Quel vacarme !
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

Interesting background on this French performance art troupe:
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 9:53am Flash Strap:

see ya friends, i'm off to smirk at the factory
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 9:53am doca:

@Doug: Brazilian countryside keeps some interesting and very VERY old Portuguese traditions. One of them is the cavalhadas, which are representations of battles between Christians and Moors in the Middle Ages. I think "repente" comes from the same background.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 9:53am annie:

Going a tad crazy over here. I have a phone interview this afternoon for a job at Amazon, and I'm supposed to fill out some kind if i-application form online, ahead of the interview. I keep following their instructions to receive my password via email, but the email never comes. I feel like I'm trapped in some kind of horrible, recursive loop, which may in fact stand in for the interview itself.

@Mr. C
The artist alone decides! (Virtually every artist I've ever spoken with or read in print who talked about recording for ESP has called Bernie Stollman a thug and a thief.)

And a gluten-free Guten Morgen to you, too!
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 11:00am Jeff Golick:

Recently came across an ESP-Disk' title that was totally new to me: Billed as John Surman's debut on wax, I think.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

Jazz played a notable role in the Cold War. With emerging and liberated nations joining the world stage in the late '50s and '60s, the U.S. State Department sent out waves of happy black American musicians to sell the notion that the USA was full of racial harmony and brotherhood. For the musicians, it was a paying gig; for the U.S. it was rank propaganda.

There, I said it.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 11:04am listener james from westwood:

Doug, you must be OVER the weather then.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 11:11am Alex In Illinois:

But how do we know whether you spelled it incorrectly or just the way the title is actually spelled on the album or mp3 info?
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex in Illinois
Hmm. That's deep. I think you should just assume I fucked up and go from there.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

Since it's approaching lunchtime (here in Pittsburgh), I thought I would play music from Hungary.
  Fri. 2/27/15 11:15am Robert:

Couldn't you just call today's show "Music" & ship it in a plain brown wrapper?
  Fri. 2/27/15 11:16am Dean:

@Brian in UK: Aware, yes. I have two or three records of his, maybe some by others on which he appeared. I bet a gig with Sly & Robbie would hit the sweet spot.
  Fri. 2/27/15 11:18am Dean:

Add Greece and Turkey to the mix, then. My favorite book that was never written about classical history was Bacon's Greece.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 11:18am glenn:

mmmm. greek bacon.

@Dean Think you are right. Better get the plastic out. It is on the day after my birthday, so my treat to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 11:19am Hugo:

Molvær, yes. Seen him live several times. Before striking out on his own, he was a member of Masqualero, named after a Wayne Shorter tune. Info here:

This was more of a mainstream outfit, with two members from the old Garbarek quartet.

The break as far as Molvær is concerned, came with this one:

It marked a turn to electronica and special effects. He has worked quite a lot with Bill Laswell over the years.

So, no Vanilla Ice?
  Fri. 2/27/15 11:34am Dean:

@Hugo: I don't know that one at all. There is this: ...but I seem to recall having this disk included with the original Khmer disk, not as a separate release.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

No, I but I would play Frappuccino Mocha Ice!

My wife made a delicious Christmas Pudding Ice Cream recently. It sang in my mouth.

As another Oklahoman aside, they banned AP History classes b/c the courses didn't celebrate America enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 11:44am Hugo:

@Dean: You may very well be right. I have the Khmer, but I don't think there was a remix cd attached to it. The one I listed is definitely a separate release.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 11:44am Jeff Golick:

You know that line from The Conversation, "He'd kill us if he had the chance"? I think that every time I look at my cat.

Ok, going to bow out a tad early to take a walk, clear my head pre-interview. Thanks so much, Doug, for the great show, and to all drumsomes for the great company.
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
I like pudding ice cream in my mouth, too.

@Jeff Golick
You don't need to take a walk to clear your head. Just hit control-alt-delete.

Sometimes you can have a lot of fun pointing out that International Panel on Climate Change was never the International Panel on Global Warming.

Thanks for Junior!

This has been a no bars holed show. Lovin' it, Doug.

Did I ever tell you about my Junior Murvin mix up? WELL, I was down at the beach and saw that Jr. Murvin was playing a couple of towns north. I got some relatives into the car and drove up there to see him. Turns out, it was Junior MARVIN. A bit embarrassing.

You're mighty welcome, d¢ pät!

Wow. Legal jargon in the lyrics of a blues tune! "I'm gonna subrogate you, baby, pursuant to the clause."
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

@d¢ pät
Are you sure it wasn't Lee Marvin?

My pleasure

Quick, what rhymes with "certiorari"??!!

(Although some pronounce it sur-sho-RARE-ee.)

@Doug, @dc pat: Lee Marvin! Now I'm humming along to "Wandering Star" Uncle Michael-style.

@Doug: Purty Ferrari.

Also, George Kerr's totally boosting the Green Lantern vow in that "shall escape my sight" lyric. Not complaining now....

Didn't the comments this morning commence with a riff on "hey"?
Avatar Fri. 2/27/15 12:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Who's certiorari now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/27/15 12:01pm Parq:

The nomenclature is a no-win situation. My guess is that they originally went with "global warming" because it sounded more urgent than "climate change". ("What's the big deal? The climate is always changing.") Of course, calling it "global warming" opened the debate to the simpletons who figure "It's cold, so there's no global warming." Now, any attempt to change the focus to "climate change" invites the response, "Ah hah, so you admit that 'global warming' was wrong all the time", kind of the way saying "progressive" is a tacit admission that being "liberal" is bad.

I think we should call "gravity" something else. It's too somber. How about "fallingdownness"?

Just catching up on the archive bits I missed due to dog walking. Agree on Tom B. On the last album the song 'Today is a Bright New Day' despite the title still had the line 'there is no one I can talk to when I have so much to tell'. I'm just a sucker for that kind of sentiment.
