Doug that's terrible You're probably going to need help. I've been in that situation in my past NJ life.
Avatar 9:09am glenn:

and if you have an electric blanket or heating pad, wrap it around the pipe near where it may be frozen, if it's accessible.
Avatar 🥁 9:09am Parq:

Must be something going around; we are without water as well. I was just barely able to finish the shower before it died altogether. Since I am in an apartment house, it's my role to sit and wait while other people deal with it. That suits the part of me that's lazy just fine; the part that likes knowing what's going on, not so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

I can't find anything actually frozen in the house (thought there are plenty of pipes behind walls). The fact that all faucets throughout the house aren't getting water suggest — I would guess — that it is a main water source and not just one internal pipe.
Avatar 9:13am glenn:

well, feed pipes shouldn't be traveling through exterior walls, for this very reason, although i don't know what the pittsburgh building code says. it's more likely that cold air is coming through a basement window or uninsulated joist cavity and freezing the pipe in that location.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

The main feed is underground coming in through a wall in the basement.

Joist Cavity was a great band. Before they sold out.

Avatar 9:18am ndanna:

@Doug: We had the frozen (and then bursting) pipes Jan. 2014. Yesterday one of our cold taps stopped running, but eventually thawed out. Constant monitoring, letting faucets drip and keeping open cabinet doors so warm air reaches the pipes has (so far) avoided a repeat of last year.
Avatar 9:19am ndanna:

B b baby, I can tell you've got a big problem
When I flush the john, then your shower goes on
Baby, now watcha gonna do?

If Drano's a joke and your plunger is broke
Baby, call the mensch with a monkey wrench
Baby, he'll be there for you

Shower's backing up, water won't go down?
Ba ba ba baby, don't forget my plumber
Ba ba ba baby, sink's been stopped up all summer
Ba ba ba baby, better call the plumber, he'll know what to do

Pipes been blowing up, pipes been breaking down
And the carpet's soaked right through
Ba, ba, ba, kitchen's flooded too
Ba, ba, ba, girl, you know it's true

B b betcha this guy makes more than my lawyer
If he works for one day, costs you half a year's pay
Baby, he can be here by two

So if you've got cash, he'll be there in a flash
Makin' service calls in his overalls
Baby, he'll do his best for you

Sewer's backing up, got you feelin' down?
Ba ba ba baby, don't forget my plumber
Ba ba ba baby, leaky pipes are a bummer
Ba ba ba baby, time to call the plumber, maybe call a few

Got a problem with plumbing? Gotta blame it on something?
Blame it on the drain, it was cloggin', cloggin'
Blame it on the faucet that drips all night
If hairballs, grease and goo won't let the water through
Blame it on the drain, yeah, yeah

When I flush the john, now when I flush the john
It turns the shower on

Was finally able to escape yesterday, only encountered 1 hazardous patch. Schools still closed though - it's been a full week. I sense no spring break for the kiddos.

I am assuming no news is good news re my pipes at home. If not...well, I just am not going to think about it right now.

Schools closed here for a second day in a row. Timing is good because my daughter is in L.A. with her mother screwing around!
Avatar 11:30am kat330:

Attending the Oscars? I heard it was like 85 in LA recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

Hey cats and kitties, we are above "water" here. It's 1°F!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:31am Uncle Michael:

It's pretty much stayed 1985 in L.A. They got stuck.
  11:32am andujar:

@Glenn..."Dopesmoker" is a classic! Ah, here's my record playing right now! Thanks Doug!
Avatar 11:32am kat330:

Hey, we're at 7°F -- really did generate some heat!
  11:32am andujar:

My math question for that last comment was 660+6=?
Avatar 🥁 11:32am βrian:

41°F in Kodiak, Alaska.

@UM: So did the Republicans / Tea Party.

Aren't you supposed to leave your water dripping at night? I heard that somewhere. Out here in California, it's always above freezing. Sometimes its above boiling.
Avatar 11:38am kat330:

Very resourceful.
  11:39am βrian:

27°F in Topeka? Smoking!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:40am Alex In Illinois:

@andujar: I think a few years ago, it was discovered that the number was miss-translated, and that it actually translates to 616 and not 666.
Avatar 11:41am kat330:

Found out yesterday we have to leave our kitchen tap dripping even all day, or all morning at least. Already been leaving taps overnight on drip. I HATE that considering I'm such water conservationist / activist.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:41am Andrew Waterloo:

having a dripping tap will help keep things from freezing.
  11:42am andujar:

I know that Lee Perry intro!
  11:42am tr//sh:

Allowing a slight drip helps ward off prone-to-freezing pipes.

And à propos of I dunno - ice? - hey glenn, how about that women's olympic team goaltender playing in the nhl? Good news.
Avatar 🥁 11:42am βrian:

@Alex: I read that, too. 616 is the area code for the conservative corner of Michigan.
Avatar 🥁 11:42am Parq:

Kat (I really feel guilty about making you drop your new name), put a dutch oven under it and use the collected water the next day for cooking.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:43am Alex In Illinois:

Schools in the Chicago area were closed yesterday, but then there were these announcements about YMCAs and museums being open and being staffed to handle more kids. My neighbor above us is a teacher and she was home all day with her music playing while I was working from home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

I love you all, you weenie boppers.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:46am Alex In Illinois:

@βrian: YES! I had forgotten about that part!
@Doug: Maybe I am not blaspheming yet, but I am a heathen infidel.
@Parq: I was going to suggest something like that too. Like maybe attach some sort of hoses to the faucets to fill up large buckets or tubs or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

I let my basement faucets drip last year when it got to -9°F. I just got complacent this time and figured it would be OK. Never again!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:47am Andrew Waterloo:

A lot of schools around here are closed too. Of course it looks like a beautiful sunny day from my perspective.
Avatar 11:48am still b/p:

Saw something years ago about a Brazilian architect/activist recommending a simple system and suggestion for everyone to collect the valuable but lost water that runs when you start a shower waiting for it to warm up, then to use that for plant and garden watering.

Avatar 🥁 11:53am βrian:

We moved the water heater closer to the shower and cut the wait more than in half.

Water saved in a bucket can be used to flush a toilet, mind you. Just pour.
  11:53am jessie:

geez, good work, hon! um it's pretty nice here this morning in Hollywood -- . We're going to Venice Beach. I owe you one.

Kimbrough...one of my all time favorites! Thanks for the music.
Avatar 11:54am kat330:

@Parq: Problem is, we have incredibly tiny sinks, both in kitchen and bathroom. Can't put anything very large under, but every drip counts.

Thanks, Doug, for the Prokofieffian profusion!
