Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Doug, you realize that we can never, ever un-see that image.

Just read the Dylan speech. Thought provoking, but I'm not backing off anything I've said about the Christmas album.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 12:28pm kat330:

I can't get past the music to get to the lyrics -- sorry, but country twang ain't my thing (got my overfill w/ my dad's rural radio station as a kid).
  Fri. 2/20/15 12:30pm Santos L Halper:

Howdy UM! Read that speech last week, ol' Bob was pretty rough on Tom, but overall great.

Growing up I mostly associated him as a reference in a Robin Wms riff and shilling for dog chow on TV IIRC. Thanks for playing him today.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 12:31pm chromaphone:

Psyched to check out more BL Riley. Always loved Red Hot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 12:34pm Brian in UK:

I read somewhere that Dylan has recorded more covers off Harry Smith's anthology than anyone else. Likes to keeps it real you might say.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 12:36pm kat330:

I do like Freedy though!
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 12:36pm chromaphone:

Seems like Hall did for coffee what Red Simpson did for trucks :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 12:36pm Parq:

Given all that Zimmie's done and been through, it strikes me as reasonable for him to tell all of his detractors to get off his lawn.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 12:36pm kat330:

Lots of local airplay for his "Bad Reputation."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 12:37pm Uncle Michael:

Tom has his share of truck songs too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 12:38pm Uncle Michael:

I remember Freedy as a restaurant worker in lawrence, KS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/20/15 12:39pm Spaniel:

Oh man, Little Bitty, nice! Enjoying this one.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 12:39pm kat330:

Hope you gave him some good tips.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 12:41pm Uncle Michael:

He was washing dishes and bussing tables. Baking too, maybe.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 12:41pm kat330:

@Parq: When I first read the speech and linked to the AARP interview, I was more interested in whom he thanked for his success, which, after all, was rather meteoric and easy compared to most artists.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 12:43pm kat330:

He mentioned Baez almost as an afterthought, but man, he sure rode her coattails and owes her big time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 12:43pm Parq:

I'm a reasonable person and I accept that the world is constantly changing, but I am just not ready to accept that it's possible to use "Bob Dylan" and "AARP interview" in the same sentence.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 12:43pm Doug Schulkind:

I am enjoying this immensely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 12:44pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Doug. So am I.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 12:47pm kat330:

@Parq: BTW, I know have little pots underneath both dripping taps. We have one of those low faucet heads in the kitchen -- what I'd give for a tall gooseneck!-- so can't fit anything substantial there, and the bathroom oval basin is even worse. But I'm collecting for recycling! I foresee lots of pasta in coming days.

Excellent set....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 12:51pm Parq:

"Can You Believe This Town" should also be mentioned in this discussion.

@kat I only saw him that one time - but what a way to start my concertgoing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 12:57pm Uncle Michael:

A great song, Parq!
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 12:58pm kat330:

Leaps and bounds over mine: Sonny & Cher (though I went for Peter & Gordon and headliners Herman's Hermits ;). S&C got a mention in his speech (or interview?? I'm conflating the info now, and it was the first day it appeared in the NYer I read all that).
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 1:02pm ndbob:

@kat Sonny and Cher was my second concert - same tour maybe? with Len Barry, the Changing Times, etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/20/15 1:04pm Webhamster Henry:

Thanks for this little trip to Harper Valley, Covers and Answer Tunes department.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 1:04pm kat330:

Glad you're diggin' it, Henry.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 1:05pm ndbob:

Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 1:11pm kat330:

Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 1:12pm Doug Schulkind:

Pretty Totally Awesome
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 1:14pm kat330:

It's My Party and Judy's Turn to Cry is a nice pair, speaking of Lesley Gore. Oh, we weren't? Sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/20/15 1:14pm northguineahills:

I was introduced to the Wilhelm scream via Disney's Goofy.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 1:18pm kat330:

@UM: Dylan's very literal in his early ballads about real, specific people, Medgar Evers and Hattie Carroll come to mind.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 1:18pm kat330:

Hurricane Carter, u.s.w.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

I agree, writing about historical events that he wasn't personally present for, he's literal.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 1:20pm Doug Schulkind:

I gotta up and run to work. Will devour the rest on archive. Thanks Michael Uncle!

"Sarah" was pretty darn specific, but I guess that's an exception that proves the rule.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 1:56pm Uncle Michael:

It's my pleasure. if you'd have asked if I ever imagined a three-hour Tom T. tribute, I'd have bet against it.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 1:59pm chromaphone:

I wonder if it's as simple as Dylan really doesn't like overly happy/sentimental songs and that was his competition of sorts.

Dangit. So focused on truck repair and motels I forgot about this show.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 2:15pm chromaphone:

I would think Dylan would be a heavy metal fan since he is so into bad boys. Maybe he could do his versions of Motley Crue songs on a future album...

Thank you, hyde.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/20/15 2:28pm Alex In Illinois:

I've enjoyed being convinced that Bob Dylan has Tom T. Hall a little wrong.

Uncle Michael, you are like Tom T. Hall's lawyer/advocate, but instead having to make people endure a court proceeding, it's mostly done letting the music speak for itself.

Maybe if someone else in the music field needs a reputation defended, they will hire you.
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 2:28pm Lane Steelpicker:

They mentioned the new diesel emissions control system to eliminate NOx from diesels. In the presence of a catalyst, Diesel Exhaust Fluid (65% urea, distilled from sheep urine) turns NOx into N² and water. But our catalytic reactor messed up.
I may not like Hall's voice, attitude or fists, but I like his voice and especially his writing. Except this one (Clayton Delaney) and I Love. He wrote much good. But also much schlock. And some schlock au gratin
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 2:30pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 2:31pm Uncle Michael:

Is there more than one, Brian?
Avatar Fri. 2/20/15 2:31pm Lane Steelpicker:

Alex, I don't think Zimmy did him wrong. He wrote many good, much cheese. And I've promised to be good, but I have experienced him firsthand. Cliff's Notes version: excluding schoolyard bullies, I've had ONE fight in my life and The Storyteller hit me first.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 2:41pm Uncle Michael:

That can still be corrected.

This song slays me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/20/15 2:43pm Alex In Illinois:

@Lane: In any case, Uncle Michael presented a view that seemed different from what Dylan was suggesting. I am certainly not claiming to know much about Hall on my own.

Tom T. Hall hit you? Wow. I think that is the first thing anyone other than Uncle Michael mentioned about Hall's character.

I was comparing Uncle Michael to a lawyer because a laywer does not need to like everything about his client, or even have to like his client at all. But I think Uncle Michael was presenting the whole thing well.

I shall play Pimp the Prine/Wiseman. I love The Voice With the Heart.

So will you take up for Merle, too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/20/15 2:49pm Uncle Michael:

Bob walked his Merle nonsense back and Merle spoke up too.
Avatar    Fri. 2/20/15 2:52pm hyde:
