Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

this is...um...fucking awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 12:21pm Mike East:

and HELLO!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:23pm Wilson K:

Dude, Hinky Dinky Time rules and all, but you mustn't ever play Xmas songs out of season! Even if they're ostensibly about the weather! It's against the nature of things!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:26pm Lane Steelpicker:

Wilson, point of order: Let it Snow is a winter song. And I like this steel version of Snowbird. Wish Michael wouldn't talk over the pedal steel
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 12:26pm Uncle Michael:

You only have to put up with my winter music for six more weeks.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:27pm Alex In Illinois:

It's not an Xmas song. It's snow song, or winter song as Lane jut stated. When I was a kid watching the evening news for school closings, they would show the names of the schools scrolling upwards over a background of falling snow while playing that song, even if in February or March.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 12:29pm Uncle Michael:

I'll let you know that I had two other seasonal music beds in mind for winter but could find instrumental versions of neither of them. They were Neil Young's "Winterlong" and Tommy Roe's "It's Now Winter's Day."
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:31pm Wilson K:

Friends, let's all admit "Let it Snow" is a weather song AND a Christmas song. Otherwise you'd be hardpressed to explain its ubiquity in the Christmas catalog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 12:32pm Uncle Michael:

So stipulated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 12:34pm Stevel:

bubububububububbubububububu

[bass run] awesome
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:34pm Wilson K:

But the statement I stand by most firmly is my primary one: Hinky Dinky Time rules.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 12:35pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Wilson!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:35pm listener james from westwood:

It's a dessert topping AND a floor wax! And hear, hear to the ruling status of HDT!

Ah, tender young Alice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 12:37pm Stevel:

"Let it Snow" is a cheerful acceptance of the undeniable fading of the light, heat and, of course, life itself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 12:38pm Mike East:

Screw the snow, man. Makes winter so much harder than it already is. Miami, here I come.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 12:38pm Uncle Michael:

We're gonna play name that tune in a moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 12:39pm Stevel:

I had not known of Don Covay until last night's Spazz tribute. Wow, to the influence on Mick Jagger (perhaps not so much in this cut, but still...) Cool stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 12:39pm Stevel:

Hmmmm
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:40pm Lane Steelpicker:

HDT rules. The fact that the Santa/Baby Jesus cabal has subsumed winter/snow songs should not change the identity of the Winter/Snow songs. For that matter, my Idol even contributed to that appropriation. Buddy Emmons put Sleigh Ride on his Christmas album. But there's neither Santa nor Jesus in it
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:40pm listener james from westwood:

AC/DC, what is it, THunderstruck?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 12:40pm Stevel:

Besides Thunderstruck?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 12:40pm Uncle Michael:

James wins!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:40pm listener james from westwood:

And I like the cover!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:41pm listener james from westwood:

I'll take a photo finish alongside Stevel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 12:45pm Stevel:

James: You might want to consider the negative effect on your image, but thanks!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:45pm Alex In Illinois:

I was going to call this Thunderstruck rendition "ear candy", but it is something tastier--maybe "ear cannoli" or "ear baklava"?
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:45pm listener james from westwood:

UM: Sad to hear you were illin'. Week's been unkind to a lot of folks I know; hope yours finds an uptick soon!
Avatar    Fri. 2/6/15 12:47pm PKNY:

@UM - I heard recently it's actually Donovan on co-vocals w/ Alice on "Billion Dollar Babies".
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:49pm Wilson K:

"Let it Snow" is an unapologetic nookie ploy... yo, I brought popcorn, wanna get frisky?
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:50pm Alex In Illinois:

There are no many people who will treat us to ? & the Mysterians tunes other than 96 Teardrops. I can think of only Uncle Michael and Ted Baron
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 12:50pm Uncle Michael:

PKNY, WHAT?!

Thanks, James.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 12:51pm Alex In Illinois:

AHH. I meant "not many people"
Avatar    Fri. 2/6/15 12:52pm PKNY:

@UM - pretty sure I heard Donovan mention this in an older interview that Howard Stern did, but it's also listed in the Wikipedia page on the song:

Hi chromaphone...likewise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 1:05pm Brian in UK:

Just read Glyn Johns' Sound Man. He did the early Steve Miller LPs. Loved Sailor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 1:05pm Mike East:

I won the Big Star doc during last year's marathon. I really gotta find "I Am the Cosmos" somewhere. Chris Bell's story makes me sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 1:05pm Stevel:

Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 1:06pm Lane Steelpicker:

I remember a few years ago listening to him on the Opry, when he did a song about Jesse James, and prefaced it with a brief history lesson, and wondered why idolize a murdering sociopath.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 1:06pm Uncle Michael:

The early SMB stuff still works well for me. The '70s hits, not so much.

Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 1:37pm Alex In Illinois:

It sounds like he is playing a set of pan pipes
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 1:38pm Uncle Michael:

I guessed a recorder.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 1:41pm Alex In Illinois:

I was thinking that it was panpipes on a bracket so he can play them and the guitar at the same time, like what is sometimes done with a harmonica.
Avatar    Fri. 2/6/15 1:41pm V Priceless:

fine show, Uncle M!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 1:42pm ndbob:

pretty sure it's panpipes
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 1:42pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, V!

I really don't know, Alex. It could be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 1:45pm Uncle Michael:

It's "quills" which I take to be essentially, pan pipes.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 1:47pm Doug Schulkind:

That was one motherfukkin great segue right there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 1:47pm Uncle Michael:

I'll take that compliment! Thanks!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 1:48pm Alex In Illinois:

Yes, "quills"! The first time I read about that term being used for pan pipes was from a British guy writing about US music, and I had some doubts, but I have been coming across that more often.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 1:49pm chromaphone:

very cool. Never heard of such an instrument. Love that song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 1:50pm Uncle Michael:

I will speculate that a set of quills was probably actually made from bird quills. Turkey, perhaps? Something large.

Damn, UM, you weren't shitting about the fresh pack. Hot hotness here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:07pm Uncle Michael:

Jessie Mae, I know of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 2:08pm Parq:

Look, Mommy and Daddy are wrestling!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:09pm Uncle Michael:

Heh. Hi Parq.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:09pm Alex In Illinois:

Is this pornophonic?
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:09pm Lane Steelpicker:

Serge sounds like Lenny Cohen to me
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:10pm glenn:

is this hinky, or dinky?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 2:11pm Parq:

Lane, well, they were both ugly as plywood, yet revered as over the top sexy.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:11pm Dominick:

You got your dinky in my hinky
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:11pm Uncle Michael:

you're getting warmer
Fri. 2/6/15 2:11pm Holly in NC:

@Doug - am kinda obsessed w Jessie Mae
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 2:12pm Parq:

Okay, that's it, I'm turning off the speakers on my work puter. (By the way, this Rita came out while I was in college radio. We had a lot of fun with it, but never got away with playing it on the air.)
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:12pm glenn:

ummmm, leonard cohen was pretty good looking when he was tearing up the montreal nightclubs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:13pm Uncle Michael:

I don't know how to tell you all this...but this isn't the last song in this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 2:13pm Parq:

I figured.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:13pm Uncle Michael:

Earbuds, Parq!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:13pm Alex In Illinois:

If you are listening at work use headphones!
I wish I were working from home today.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 2:15pm Mike East:

hehe, I'm playin' this at work.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:15pm Doug Schulkind:

It's funny how every one of the tunes in this set were recorded at Katz's Delicatessen.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:15pm listener james from westwood:

@UM: As a nice lady once said, more more more!
@Parq, Alex: I used to have the same race-for-the-headphones moment with dear old Kenny G when he had a show. As for me right now, all hail freelancing!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:15pm Lane Steelpicker:

Parq, there's something about being good with lyrics. As Steve Martin said in Roxanne, A few frilly words, and you're counting ceiling tiles
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:15pm Uncle Michael:

All I know is that kidney stones are a bitch.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:16pm glenn:

which makes gall stones a bastard?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 2:17pm Parq:

I'm moving around the office too much for headphones. Besides, honest, I'm blushing just having this on low volume in the background.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:19pm listener james from westwood:

@UM: I frequently found a coworker of mine bent double over such stones.
@Doug: Clever nod there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

I never had a microphone nearby when working a stone. I coulda made a killing.
  Fri. 2/6/15 2:26pm Dean:

Amy Camus!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:27pm Uncle Michael:

Do you subscribe to that theory, Dean?
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:29pm glenn:

it's as a good a theory to explain her as any other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:30pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah, heads; Amy Camus...tails; space alien.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:33pm listener james from westwood:

My mom always liked that theory but I think she was of a "print the legend" mind on Yma.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:34pm Doug Schulkind:

Gotta go do some stuff. Have a killer last 26 minutes, Uncle Michael!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:34pm Lane Steelpicker:

Hippies play pedal steel strange. But purdy
  Fri. 2/6/15 2:35pm Dean:

My subscription to that theory lapsed. Now it's all Sartre.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:35pm Uncle Michael:

I thought that was fake pedal. No?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:37pm Uncle Michael:

Nope, real! Live and learn today, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:37pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Doug!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:39pm Alex In Illinois:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 2:44pm Mike East:

NO! I mean, YES!
  Fri. 2/6/15 2:45pm Dean:

For a second there I thought this was the Germs' "No God."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 2:45pm Parq:

For my money, the live version of "Roundabout" blows this away, but I'm turning it up anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:45pm Uncle Michael:

I've decided that the statute of limitations has run out on Roundabout. Amnesty.
  Fri. 2/6/15 2:46pm Dean:

Was it here that I first heard of "In and Around Greg Lake"?
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:46pm Slater:

ELP next?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:46pm Brian in UK:

Uncle have you heard 'In and Around Greg Lake' by Wondermints? The only reason BrianWilson can tour is Wondermints?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:46pm Uncle Michael:

Alas, ELP for me...no guilt...also no pleasure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:47pm Uncle Michael:

No. I must hear it!
  Fri. 2/6/15 2:47pm Dean:

I second UM's ELP experience. For me the Copland does them in.
  Fri. 2/6/15 2:48pm Dean:

Also, Wakeman eats Emerson for breakfast. (Trolling.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:49pm Uncle Michael:

I have the Nice when I need any Emerson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 2/6/15 2:49pm Parq:

Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Center of the Earth. There, I said it.
  Fri. 2/6/15 2:50pm Dean:

Yes, he seems nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:50pm Uncle Michael:

I once gave my dad The Six Wives of Henry The Eighth for fathers day. Can you imagine?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:50pm Brian in UK:

Uncle cookin' show.

Will drop you a line soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:51pm Uncle Michael:

I should do that again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:51pm Uncle Michael:

See you later, Brian. Thanks.
  Fri. 2/6/15 2:52pm Dean:

Sometimes a Wakeman concept album is just a Wakeman concept album.--S. Freud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:53pm Brian in UK:

Who is Shirley Freud?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:53pm Uncle Michael:

How the hell was this a b-side?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:54pm Uncle Michael:

Shirley U. Geste.

Beau's sister.
  Fri. 2/6/15 2:54pm Dean:

Stop calling me Shirley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:55pm Brian in UK:

This is an eye opener. Agree Uncle.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:57pm chromaphone:

yea that Charlie Rich was amazing! Guess I gotta check out more of his stuff.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:57pm ndbob:

excellent show UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:58pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks a lot for hanging out today, everyone!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:58pm Lane Steelpicker:

Michael, it's POSSIBLE that it was faked, but highly unlikely.
1) the pedal steel tonality in the midst is almost unique
2) I thought I heard a couple of instances of two notes bending at different rates. A slide guitar with a B-bender COULD do that, but they'd have to be pretty damn good.
I'll give it a cynical listen looking for fakery. But my on-the-fly ear says it's a pedal steel, probably a Zum, Franklin or Emmons (modern guitar, not a 60s honky-tonk hero)
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:58pm Dominick:

!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 2:59pm Lane Steelpicker:

I tucked back in, thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 2:59pm Uncle Michael:

The steel player on the Matthew Sweet was Greg Leisz, Lane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 3:00pm Uncle Michael:

Hiya, Dominick.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 3:00pm listener james from westwood:

Ah, should've known Neil would have given this one some love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 3:01pm Uncle Michael:

Syruppy...yet he nails it.
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 3:01pm Lane Steelpicker:

Greg Leisz is awesome. I told you I have a gear connection with him?
Fri. 2/6/15 3:02pm Holly in NC:

In and around the lake... (singing).. :-)
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 3:03pm chromaphone:

Listening to GUitar in the Space AGe today in my car :)
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 3:03pm listener james from westwood:

What's life without a bit of syrup here and there?
Wouldn't be a Friday if it didn't end here. Thanks, UM, and be well, all!!
Avatar Fri. 2/6/15 3:03pm Lane Steelpicker:

I bought a used speaker for my Fender Super Twin head from Milkman Amps. It was used by Greg on the Eric Clapton tour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 2/6/15 3:06pm Uncle Michael:

Very cool, Lane. Thanks everyone.

Till next week...
Sat. 2/7/15 8:11am David in ATL from NJ:

Listening to the replay. I'll be back after a cold shower.
