Buncha Brazilian hippies these are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/30/15 9:17am Konin:

Actually my full name is Konin The Barber. But I like your suggestion too, Doug.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

Duly un-noted.

For some reason, that makes me think of Spike Lee's first film, "Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads"
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 9:20am Doug Schulkind:

Flutes and bongos? Flutes and bongos!
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 9:21am glenn:

isn't head cutting what the old blues and jazz dudes used to call after hours jam sessions?
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

Just cutting, as in "cutting sessions." These were the late-night affairs in clubs after all the musicians finished their regular gigs. They would gather and play collaboratively. but competitively. If another player on your instrument outplayed you, you had to leave the bandstand.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 9:26am glenn:

hell, i'd never even make the bandstand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/30/15 9:31am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/30/15 9:53am Holly in NC:

Morning! Blow, man, blow!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/30/15 9:56am Brian in UK:

Hello Doug and desperadoes.

Was it Bette Midler who said 'I'm a librarian really'.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

The theme, βrian, is songs about calling your woman like a pig and urging gentlemen to exhale explosively through a saxophone.

Welcome aboard, Holly in NC!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/30/15 9:56am Holly in NC:

??! Please direct me to 'flutes & bongos', dear Doug!
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 9:57am βrian:

Sounds risky to me.

wait! flutes and bongos! is that any relation to bongos, bongos, bongos or bongos, flute guitar? Two classics on vinyl in my good friend's collection. Could really clear the room after the keg died and it was time to sleep...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/30/15 10:08am Lewis:

oh yeah, and they were In Stereo!
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:09am Doug Schulkind:

@Holly in NC
The flutes 'n' bongos appeared in the first set.

@Brain in UK
How the frack are ya?!

@Artie Haywire
You gotta warm up your embouchure first.

I like your story better than mine. My flute and bongos appeared in the Brazilian hippie set at the start of the show.
  Fri. 1/30/15 10:13am Mr C:

I forgot how good this album is...didn't know McCoy story
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/30/15 10:16am Artie Haywire:

Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr C
McCoy Tyner, another Philly stalwart.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

This tune by Rocky Boyd is queerly reminiscent of another song, made famous AFTER this was recorded. Can you guess the song?
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:21am Shaun:

'So Why', Doug??

Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

You are most welcome! Pull on a spacesuit, grab some freeze-dried Tang and let's go!
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr C
It would be interesting to do some deep listening to all the recording sessions Watts engineered. Did he have a discernible "sound" I wonder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/30/15 10:33am Blacktooth:

That Crystallized Movements track was BONKERS!!!!!! Thanks for the pre-lunch mind-fry....
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:34am βrian:

Mmm, Moon Tang!
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

You're on the "wrong" playlist. Go here:
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:35am Alex In Illinois:

Do they still make Tang? Do Astronauts still drink it? I wonder if Cosmonauts have ever had a freeze-dried Vodka drink.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:36am Doug Schulkind:

Careful, Sonny. You almost said "poontang." Ack!

@Alex in Illinois
There simply has GOT to have been some freeze-dried vodka somewhere in human history.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:36am ndbob:

Yep they do though I can't remember the last time I saw it
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:37am Alex In Illinois:

@Blacktooth: Are you doing that thing were you have 2 pop-up players running playing so you are listening to 2 different shows at the same time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/30/15 10:38am Spaniel:

@Alex what ever happened to Palcohol?
Avatar    Fri. 1/30/15 10:38am duke:

You can buy Tang on Amazon. I couldn't find freeze dried vodka though.

Yes, this is my "Tony Coulter set."

@Spaniel: According to their site: "We expect Palcohol to be available in the spring of 2015." It's made here in the USA and not in Russia
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:48am βrian:

@Editor James: Wow. I'm curious to know the author's approximate age.
Avatar    Fri. 1/30/15 10:48am Guido from Cologne:

- Most influential album for generations of experimental/DIY-musicians to follow.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:50am listener james from westwood:

βrian: No idea. But you're never too old to be lazy.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

I can't stress this enough: I wish you no stress.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:52am βrian:

Will the editor require seppuku in atonement?
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:52am listener james from westwood:

@still b/p: Bill Parcells is worth no stress.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:53am βrian:

That is, nó stress!
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

Whatever one thinks of Bill Parcells his nickname "The Big Tuna" has got to bring some measure of joy into one's life.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:54am listener james from westwood:

βrian: I will look down the entirety of my copy editor's nose on him while adding a query to suggest ways to "tighten and rewrite this section of text if it's not going to be set as a formal quote from the source you used."

Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:59am Shaun:

Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Andrew Waterloo
A different robot, you mean perhaps?!
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 10:59am βrian:

Mittens' next task: to pass through the eye of a needle.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener James
In my years as a book editor, I found the job to be about 75% therapist, 28% salesman, 3% editor.
  Fri. 1/30/15 11:02am Dean:

@βrian: I read somewhere that that's hard to do.
  Fri. 1/30/15 11:03am Dean:

@Doug: And maybe a half a percent or so mathematician?
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:03am listener james from westwood:

I'll believe Willard isn't running by some time in late January 2017.
Avatar    Fri. 1/30/15 11:04am Guido from Cologne:

Isn't that Davie Allan and the Arrows behind a moniker?
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:06am listener james from westwood:

By contrast, I'll vote for these Senators as many times as I can. Possibly in the same election. Better move to Florida....

... naaaaah.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:06am ndbob:

Smart move on Mitt's part
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

Davie Allen was behind the music performed as "Max Frost and the Troopers." Not sure if they were performing that track though.

The Paupers are right--I'll never be the same after hearing this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/30/15 11:11am Brian in UK:

Doug, is that a given that Romney is not running or maybe a McGovern given Romney's givens are governed by jibberish jibber jabber.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/30/15 11:13am Parq:

As far as Mitt goes, we still have Trump, Palin and Huckabee. What I want to know is, what's keeping Rick Santorum?
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:13am listener james from westwood:

The Alaskan person set a new high (low?) for gibberish at one of the recent Republican bund meetings when her teleprompter committed suicide.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener James
Too many hanging chads down there!

That percussion open on Magic People just slays me.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

Please don't mention Rick Santorum here. This is a family show.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:14am listener james from westwood:

@Parq: Santorum's kept by a rotating circle of BDSM folks. He sleeps in a box most Wednesdays like the Gimp in "Pulp Fiction."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/30/15 11:14am Brian in UK:

Doug, did you say that Plainsong were Canadian? Really.

There was a wonderful Ralph Steadman cartoon if memory serves called 'Penguins on Hearing the Death of Ameila Earhart'
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

Owch, that hurts!
Avatar    Fri. 1/30/15 11:15am Guido from Cologne:

- Davie Allen made an album of cover versions from that soundtrack. I mixed this up.

Guess one can run an entire radio station with Les Baxter music alone.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Guido from Cologne
Les is more, more or less.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/30/15 11:19am Brian in UK:

Thomas clone?
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

I find this sweeter than the more "edgy" Mapfumo.

The Dendera Kings were also known as... The Marxist Brothers.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:24am βrian:

Mapfumo should cut down on the caffeine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/30/15 11:25am Brian in UK:

It is ironic that he used to sing for the Zanu party but now with that dictator in power he is as far as he can get (Oregon) from Zimbabwe.
  Fri. 1/30/15 11:27am Dean:

These guys are ripping off Santana!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/30/15 11:27am Brian in UK:

The scary thing is that Mugabe's wife is taking a more dominant role in politics and shopping these days. She was his secretary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/30/15 11:27am Mike East:

@Dean - just heard that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/30/15 11:28am Brian in UK:

This is not Mike Shrieve drumming though.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
I find Mapfumo's opposition to Mugabe to be straight in line with his political orientation from the beginning. It's just too fucking awful to comprehend that every rotten, disgusting thing that Rhodesians in power said about Mugabe came pretty much true.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

Mike East is a beast! (Way better than Mikes North, South and especially West. He's just a jerk.)
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

Just to say it officially: This is my favorite track of the show.

So far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/30/15 11:36am Mike East:

Why thank you DJ Schulkind. Great set you have going here. May have to look into that "Living Is Hard" comp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/30/15 11:38am Mike East:

I need more West African music in my life. This is a feeling I've had for some time now.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:40am βrian:

@Mike East: Aye, that.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:40am βrian:

I think Rev. Henry was guilty.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:50am listener james from westwood:

Killer Clarence Carter! I feel like it should go on a compilation or DJ premium of story songs along w/ "Ode to Billy Joe" and "Harper Valley PTA." And, of course, "Patches."
Avatar    Fri. 1/30/15 11:51am Guido from Cologne:

Is this Clarence Carter track what they call Country Funk?
It's a bit Tony Joe White'ish in a way ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/30/15 11:53am Uncle Michael:

Guido, a lot of southern soul is just funky by nature.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

Well put, Guido. The Candi Staton was countryfunkish, too. I've been trying to ascertain the author of that song with no luck.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:54am βrian:

I hear the siren call of chicken kebab with hummus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/30/15 11:54am Uncle Michael:

I was wondering if Candi was covering a country track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/30/15 11:55am Uncle Michael:

See you all in the next room. Great show today, Doug.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

Sam Dees has got his Curtis Mayfield on right here.

Be careful, I hear the chicken kebab's song will turn a man to stone.

some southern soul as a certain Country tingle ... just considering my Joe Tex records ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/30/15 11:56am Stevel:

I hear the siren call of whatever the F leftovers I brought from home. Luckily, I cooked it, so its not bad.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
The next song on the comp, Candi is singing Dolly Parton's Jolene.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/30/15 11:57am Uncle Michael:

Candi's Jolene is fantastic.
Avatar Fri. 1/30/15 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

See you soon, Guido. And everyone!
