Caro writes very movingly about the connection between Selma and LBJ's amazing speech to the joint houses of Congress when he demanded action on the Voting Rights Act. That LBJ used the phrase "We shall overcome" in his address was a stunning moment of surreality.

Was fortunate to see an amazing performance of 'Alabama' given by The Archie Shepp-David Murray Quintet w/Elvin at UVa back in '93. Archie spoke some very sobering words of introduction. Always wondered whether any recordings of this made it into the wild.

Toby - I haven't heard Caro weigh in on the film. I've also heard it's a seriously overblown controversy. Reminds me a bit of how Newsweek was promising that showing Do The Right Thing in theaters was irresponsible and would surely lead to riots.

One of the few nice things that you can say about the Oscars is that an award given to a deserving film can generate a lot of interest, screen time, and viewers. Which makes it all the more of a shame when that opportunity is wasted.
