Anyone out there see SELMA yet?

Haven't seen it yet, but looking forward to it.

One very positive endorsement from my Twitter stream, and another from my Tumblr stream from a person who watches ~300 movies/year, but have not yet seen it.

Very happening show guyz

Hello D:O Just in time for one of the greatest Coltrane pieces
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 12:23pm listener james from westwood:

Indeed, duke. Always happy to hear this one.
  Mon. 1/19/15 12:24pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello from the Target lunchroom. I've got 30 unpaid minutes to enjoy my sandwich, then it's back to shelving economy-size cartons of laundry detergent. #justshootme
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 12:25pm listener james from westwood:

I really need to get my ass into the Robert Caro LBJ books, it occurs to me. I just missed his presidency as a live act and I find it (and him) contradictory and fascinating.
Avatar    Mon. 1/19/15 12:25pm duke:

@Doug see if you can pipe D:O through the Target PA system
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 12:26pm listener james from westwood:

duke's onto something here.
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 12:26pm Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: right there with you on the Caro tomes. Then I pick one up and I'm like...nah.
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 12:26pm Jeff Golick:

@duke! Nothing says "hey you there buy something" quite like Coltrane.
  Mon. 1/19/15 12:28pm Doug Schulkind:

@Listener James
I am a Robert Caro groupie. I can't recommend his LBJ books maniacally enough. When you're done with them, take on The Power Broker.
  Mon. 1/19/15 12:28pm Toby:

Hey JG!
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 12:30pm Jeff J:

Greetings Toby, Duke, and Doug!
Hope this is making the lunchroom a bit more bearable, Doug.
Also been meaning to check out those Caro LBJ books. Always thought the current Dems could take some lessons from his operating style.
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 12:31pm Jeff Golick:

The only Caro I can vouch for is THE POWER BROKER, which should be required reading for all NYC residents. A massive, fascinating book.
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 12:34pm Jeff Golick:

Also, I found this NYer piece re Congress now and then to be really worth my time: www.newyorker.com...
  Mon. 1/19/15 12:36pm Toby:

"Power Broker" & Joe Mitchell's "Up in the Old Hotel" are my two fave NYC books. Has Caro weighed in on "Selma"?
  Mon. 1/19/15 12:36pm Doug Schulkind:

@duke
I could put my walkie-talkie next to my iPhone and pump D:O Radio to all the employees. I can't sat it's much if a Coltrane crowd.
  Mon. 1/19/15 12:36pm Dean:

I'm confused. Wasn't Caro that "Goochie, goochie!" singer married to Xavier Cugat? She sang about El BJ?
  Mon. 1/19/15 12:37pm Dean:

Love that Mitchell book!
  Mon. 1/19/15 12:39pm Toby:

Ornette's "Crisis" is another out-of-print or can't find on CD collections that seems to have suppressed by the folks @ Langley
  Mon. 1/19/15 12:40pm Toby:

"talking" on "Alabama" (which was actually recorded in the studio) is, I think, Elvin hum/grunting as was his want...
  Mon. 1/19/15 12:41pm Doug Schulkind:

Caro writes very movingly about the connection between Selma and LBJ's amazing speech to the joint houses of Congress when he demanded action on the Voting Rights Act. That LBJ used the phrase "We shall overcome" in his address was a stunning moment of surreality.

OK, back to the detergent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/19/15 12:42pm Artie Haywire:

Was fortunate to see an amazing performance of 'Alabama' given by The Archie Shepp-David Murray Quintet w/Elvin at UVa back in '93. Archie spoke some very sobering words of introduction. Always wondered whether any recordings of this made it into the wild.
  Mon. 1/19/15 12:42pm Toby:

never really understood what "post-racial" even means or is, in fact, desirable. Isn't "post-RACIST" more to the point?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 1/19/15 12:43pm Brian in UK:

Hello Jeffes & Detergent Man.

MLK Jr came to our daughters junior skool many years ago.

Oh do you like my new hair cut?
  Mon. 1/19/15 12:44pm Toby:

King's "Why We Should End the War in Vietnam" speech @ Riverside Church exactly a year before his assassination scared many on both sides of the aisle & beyond.
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 12:45pm Jeff J:

Toby - I haven't heard Caro weigh in on the film. I've also heard it's a seriously overblown controversy. Reminds me a bit of how Newsweek was promising that showing Do The Right Thing in theaters was irresponsible and would surely lead to riots.

Yes, post-racist, exactly!
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 12:46pm Jeff J:

Hello Brian in the UK. Lookin' sharp!
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 12:47pm Jeff Golick:

I heard commentary to the effect the the "We Shall Overcome" speech by LBJ is underplayed in the movie some.
  Mon. 1/19/15 12:49pm Toby:

I've also been a bit miffed by the controversy re: "Selma" not receiving more Oscar nods. Could it be that while important and certainly well-done, it's just not that great.
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 12:51pm Jeff J:

Toby - I don't put any stock in Oscar nods, one way or another. I can vouch that some of the nominated films are extremely mediocre, per usual.
Avatar    Mon. 1/19/15 12:53pm duke:

When I had cable I used to dread TCM's month of oscar winners. A few were good, but for the most part they were mediocre.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/19/15 12:56pm Artie Haywire:

One of the few nice things that you can say about the Oscars is that an award given to a deserving film can generate a lot of interest, screen time, and viewers. Which makes it all the more of a shame when that opportunity is wasted.
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 12:57pm Shaun:

A'ternoon, Jeff and d:O bros (of all sexes).
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 12:58pm Jeff Golick:

Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 1:07pm Jeff J:

Afternoon, Shaun!
Agreed on both Oscar counts, @Duke and @Artie. Seems like the Academy was more adventurous in the 70s, but it's pretty hit-and-miss now.
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 1:09pm Jeff Golick:

Hi hi hi, @Sissophonic Cheryl, and welcome - though are you perhaps here for Joe Belock's show? wfmu.org...
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 1:18pm listener james from westwood:

I am just starting a proofread on a book about the US drone program post-9/11. Around New Year's I proofed a book for the same publisher on the Mt. Zion church burning & the MS Three in Neshoba Cty. This month is costing me a lot of tooth enamel....
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 1:20pm Jeff Golick:

Lord. I follow a drone-related instagram account that posts aerial photos of the most recent drone strikes -- as these tend not to get noted in ANY Western press reports. Just as a way to chronicle what goes on...
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 1:22pm listener james from westwood:

Book's 382 pp. I'm guessing it covers a lot of them, as well as GWB/BO's policies, justification, etc. Complex issue but still prima facie unnerving.
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 1:23pm Jeff Golick:

WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 1:25pm listener james from westwood:

well I just spotted that one wedding disaster, so i'm going with EVERYTHING
  Mon. 1/19/15 1:26pm snake:

Anyone know the what the long held horn tones is on this recording....it was a horn hooked up to a car battery
  Mon. 1/19/15 1:27pm Dean:

Speaking of drone, I'm dying to know what POTUS thinks of Nadja and Stuart Dempster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 1/19/15 1:28pm Uncle Michael:

Who's playing smoke detector on this?
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 1:28pm listener james from westwood:

The only drone programs I want any part of are those I hear on WFMU. Or maybe the Drone Zone stream.
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 1:34pm Jeff Golick:

@snake: No idea!
@UM: No idea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 1/19/15 1:35pm Uncle Michael:

That was some of the best Smoke Detector Ensemble of Chicago ever.

I'M KIDDING.

Wait, what?

I liked it!
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 1:37pm Mister Dobalina:

You're playing the songs that speak of my life at the current moment (ಥ‸ಥ) (ಥ‸ಥ)
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 1:38pm Mister Dobalina:

In case that you need to be explained,... those are sad owls ... cryin'

Was wondering, @Mr Dobalina...thanks and sorry to hear!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 1/19/15 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

I love this groove.
Avatar Mon. 1/19/15 1:41pm Mister Dobalina:

I appreciate you doing so...Mr G. I'm going to a rock&roll show tonight so it should left my spirits.
