Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

@Dominick 12:35 - I did see a piece on him on "The Sunday Show" last week celebrating his birthday. Absolutely genius invention, love the sound, hate the fact that people think there's such a big difference between that "portable" piece of furniture and the many ACTUALLY portable substitutes that are more reliable.

Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 1:00pm Dominick:

@Mike East - Having humped a C3 up a snow covered hill, I know the "fun" involved. Being a player, though the contemporary substitutes are certainly more reliable, the consistency of them is often at the expense of the mystery.

28℉ on the isthmus today, 38 tomorrow! I'm pulling the hammock out of storage.

Sometimes you just have to go with the original, not the short version.
Avatar    Fri. 1/16/15 1:28pm V Priceless:

nice Quiet Sun selection, UM!
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 1:31pm βrian:

This takes me back to the cork-lined "sound room" we had in the basement. Black lights, even.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 1:32pm Uncle Michael:

kama sutra poster?
Avatar    Fri. 1/16/15 1:33pm V Priceless:

Third Eye made some great Black Light posters
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 1:33pm pacific standard simon:

I had the poster of Dennis Hopper flipping the bird in Easy Rider.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 1:34pm βrian:

No poster, sadly. Just bean-bag chairs and Marantz speakers the size of small refrigerators.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/16/15 1:35pm Mike East:

never listened to Sugar...that's Bob Mould, right? I dig this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 1:35pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, Mike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 1:36pm pacific standard simon:

Well, that's about all the fun I'm allowed today. Guard says exercise period is over. Thank you for being there, Michael.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 1:36pm βrian:

Now that you mention it, there was a BL poster. Can't recall what it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 1:36pm Uncle Michael:

Sugar was fucking great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 1:36pm Uncle Michael:

See you later, Simon. Thanks for hangin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 1:36pm pacific standard simon:

@βrian - Probably something involving MC Escher.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/16/15 1:36pm Mike East:

yeah, I'm gonna have to explore this further. Thanks for being a catalyst, UM.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 1:41pm βrian:

I met M.C Escher on the stairway.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 1:44pm chromaphone:

Keep wondering, did you get this background music from The Sound Gallery comp? This is my fav track from that
Avatar    Fri. 1/16/15 1:47pm V Priceless:

wow - haven't heard this in decades - fine track! Had a cat named after this song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

Ye, it's probably from that comp. I'd have to check...because I use it here out of a different folder.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 1:51pm chromaphone:

dnt bother checking. so cool that you use it :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

Got a soft spot for 'When You Are a King'. I was young.

I was spacing a bit when I first heard this bed music, and I found myself asking which grocery store I was in.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:05pm βrian:

(It was a happy store. They had everything I've ever wanted.)
  Fri. 1/16/15 2:07pm Flash Strap:

There's a dim possibility that I enjoyed Siamese Children TWICE as much as you did, but I wouldn't want to presume
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:08pm βrian:

Is there a mute on that kazoo?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:08pm Uncle Michael:

That makes me happy, Flash.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:12pm ndbob:

nice one here UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:12pm Uncle Michael:

The kazoo was a mouth trumpet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:16pm Uncle Michael:

I only heard three "F"'s.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:17pm Lane Steelpicker:

I have a siamese grandchild...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

I've seen him on Facebook. Beautiful boy.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:28pm Lane Steelpicker:

I'm in the middle of cleaning the kitchen before cooking. The workwife was so sick, we lost 8 hours on Tuesday's trip. I sent her to the doctor, so no work for me. Getting ready to do red beans and rice
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:29pm Uncle Michael:

Lane, if you haven't tried a Beeler's smoked pork shank in dishes such as that, do.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:29pm Lane Steelpicker:

And as soon as it ends, I'm gonna download the new Dr. Who
Avatar    Fri. 1/16/15 2:30pm quinn:

I love this show
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:31pm βrian:

Just put my faux cassoulet back in the oven. Should be ready in another 4 hours or so.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:31pm Lane Steelpicker:

Yummmm. I'll remember that for the next time. I'm gonna cut up a pork steak, dust it with jerk seasoning and brown it on the George Foreman today. I showed Mrs. Gray the recipe and she asked that I substitute a cut of pork for the Andouille
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:31pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks so much, quinn.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:31pm βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:36pm Uncle Michael:

It was just nuts.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:36pm Lane Steelpicker:

I'd been in the car, being a good kid (not looking at my phone) when you were playing the Kenny Ball. I guessed it right. Have you heard his version of "Sukiyaki"? It was pretty cool.
I've still never been able to find the twangy Tele version of that that lives in my brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:38pm Uncle Michael:

I did a whole history of Sukiyaki on the old show and I played it on that show.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:40pm Lane Steelpicker:

What do you think of substituting chicken stock for at least part of the water in the beans? The other week I boiled a few carcasses down, I have a mess of stock in the freezer.
I may try to find a backing track for Sukiyaki and play it on the RTH (Redneck Table Harp). Cool melody
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/16/15 2:41pm Parq:

I'm so glad I'm not in an all white NJ high school like I was in 1973 so I can admit I dig this Kool track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:42pm Uncle Michael:

I wouldn't just because the beans don't need it and chicken stock is precious. Your smoked pork should do the job.

I season with cumin and chili powder...salt and pepper,
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:42pm βrian:

I smell purple sage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/16/15 2:45pm tikk:

Go over UM! Show The Man you won't conform to these oldfangled notions of punctuality and time and space.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:45pm Lane Steelpicker:

It's not smoked. Just plain pork steak from Herman.
I have another three or four carcasses. First Monday in February, those go in the pot for more stock. When we do a roast chicken or similar, the carcasses go in a ziploc bag for winter stockmaking
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:46pm Uncle Michael:

man, you gotta have some cured or smoked pork in those beans
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/16/15 2:46pm Mike East:

I'm in favor of chicken stock in beans...but if its homemade, UM is right, it may be too precious. My wife uses a bouillon cube in her beans sometimes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:47pm Brian in UK:

Give the man some pancetta.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:48pm Brian in UK:

Great show Uncle. Got to hit the kitchen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:49pm Brian in UK:

Hell, I always preferred The Driving Beat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:49pm Uncle Michael:

See ya later Brian. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:52pm Brian in UK:

Paul Roberts produced great covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/16/15 2:52pm efd:

hit or miss today as far as being able to listen, but I'm glad it was "hit" for Sniff 'n' The Tears!
Avatar    Fri. 1/16/15 2:52pm quinn:

killllin it
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/16/15 2:52pm Artie Haywire:

If you use good, tasty beans then you don't need much. If you haven't done it before, you owe yourself an order from Rancho Gordo.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:53pm Lane Steelpicker:

Maybe I'll go to Brookwood as the beans simmer and get some smoked hocks. Does Dillon's have 'em?
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:53pm chromaphone:

1977 but on 80's comp?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/16/15 2:53pm efd:

heh, pretty sure I've made that same segue myself over the years!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:54pm Brian in UK:

I will never get there at this rate. Flip by Grace is pretty good too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:54pm Uncle Michael:

The only place in town that sometimes has that is Natural Grocers...but I'd call...they were having issues with Beeler's deliveries.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:54pm chromaphone:

Does "new wave" mean rock with lots of keyboards from late 70s/early 80s?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:55pm Uncle Michael:

I think it was re-released in '79 and charted in '80 the second time around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:55pm Uncle Michael:

see if you've made this one, Evan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/16/15 2:55pm efd:

A hit of the '80s that was made in the '70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/16/15 2:57pm efd:

I can say "no" with confidence.
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:58pm chromaphone:

Look forward to listening to the archive of the show again, thanks UM
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:58pm Uncle Michael:

I think this has settled in as my favorite EJ album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/16/15 2:58pm Mike East:

I think this Elton John is in my current rotation of records, but hasn't made it to the platter yet...this weekend while I'm cooking for sure. I bought it because of this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:58pm Uncle Michael:

thanks, cromaphone! see you...
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 2:59pm Lane Steelpicker:

Someone wants to be Danny Gatton
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 1/16/15 2:59pm Mike East:

I pulled it out on NYE because the kids were watching Elton John performing on the TV and I felt I had to educate them on what good Elton John sounds like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 1/16/15 2:59pm Uncle Michael:

who doesn't?
Avatar Fri. 1/16/15 3:00pm ndbob:
