Oh, the Jeffs. Oh, the duality!
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:09pm Shaun:

Wasn't Who'll Stopthe Rain watchable?
Hi Jevs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/12/15 12:11pm doca:

Hey, Jeff(s)! Hi, listeners.

@Jeff G.: I'm still laughing at that discussion about how many days there are in the week by two bodybuilders that you've posted last week
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:12pm Jeff J:

Shaun - Who'll Stop the Rain is *watchable* but it's a pale shadow of the technicolor majesty of "Dog Soldiers."
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:15pm Jeff J:

Hey Artie! And welcome Doca!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/12/15 12:17pm doca:

@Jeff J: This wasn't released before?
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:17pm Jeff Golick:

@doca: A timeless classic. About time.

BEHOLD our first hyperlinked album title on the playlist! Many thanks for GTDR dj Charlie Lewis for walking us through the technological hurdles, as he welcomed us to 1998!
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:17pm Jeff J:

Not to our knowledge -- or according to the press release....
  Mon. 1/12/15 12:19pm Allsoul:

Hey y'all! St. Louis in the house. Listening with earbuds at work. Whole atmosphere of office just changed dramatically. I can make it.

Welcome, @Allsoul! In St. Louis -- recognizing No Borders!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/12/15 12:22pm doca:

@Jeff J: Great recording. But those FMP-like album covers tricked me on this one.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:22pm Jeff Golick:

Aha, @Dean. Thanks!
Wouldn't want anyone leaving the playlist, now, would we.
Try now?
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:22pm Shaun:

Ashamed to say Dog Soldiers is the only Stone I've read. What should be my next?
  Mon. 1/12/15 12:23pm Dean:

Perfect. Shows you whatthefuckIknow.
  Mon. 1/12/15 12:23pm tr/sh:

Where's the prow on this playlist? Crack a bottle in celebration on that link. Set sail ye link.
Yeah, ye.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:26pm Jeff Golick:

Howdy, @tr/sh! Bilge the anchor! Jib the spinnaker!
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:27pm Jeff J:

@Shaun - I'd say "Children of Light," his Hollywood novel. Much maligned at the time, but Stone's favorite of his own work. You also can't go wrong with "A Flag for Sunrise" his Central American book.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:30pm Jeff Golick:

I'll read CHILDREN OF LIGHT with you, @Shaun. Book group! (Can also recommend FLAG FOR SUNRISE.)
  Mon. 1/12/15 12:32pm Allsoul:

This is similar to coooer-moore's fretless banjo sound
  Mon. 1/12/15 12:34pm Allsoul:

Or really his twanger I think he calls it
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:36pm Shaun:

CHILDREN OF LIGHT. I'm on it. Cheers.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:37pm listener james from westwood:

Been in since about noon but been filling out condolence cards and a cover letter for some sympathy cookies; friend lost her dad over the weekend. Happy to have smooth tunes and all of you this suitably gloomy New Jersey Monday.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:38pm Rich in Washington:

Bring in the SKRONK!
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:39pm Shaun:

Ooh. Torygraph obit for Stone just up. www.telegraph.co.uk...
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:42pm Jeff Golick:

Sorry to hear that news, @listener james. Glad to have you aboard, though, as always.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:42pm Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @Rich!
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:43pm Shaun:

Man, he wrote a sailing novel.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:43pm Jeff J:

Welcome @Rich and @Listener James. Glad the show can provide some solace.

I forgot that D:O was on. I hope I didn't forget my pants.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:52pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks Jeff & Jeff. I have some practice from 2013 (nasty year in my circle, lost 3 moms, incl. my own and that of the deceased's son-in-law), but it's never easy. A still-young 66 and took fatally ill in the middle of the night.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 12:53pm Rich in Washington:

Hiya Jeff!
This is amazing! I am a huge fan of any grouping including Brotzmann and SHarrock! Had no idea this existed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 1/12/15 1:01pm Brian in UK:

Hello Jeffs 'n folks.

Robert Stone passing. I remember Dog Soldiers and A Flag for Sunrise from half a lifetime ago. Good reads as I recall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 1/12/15 1:04pm Brian in UK:

For some reason I have been yearning to re-read The Lost Steps by Alejo Carpentier.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 1:09pm Jeff J:

@Rich - Thanks! This set snuck out last year, released via Bandcamp.

@Brian in the UK - hey! Just recently read Carpentier's The Kingdom of This World which I loved. Need to get back to The Lost Steps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 1/12/15 1:13pm Brian in UK:

Dylan is a big fan of Harry Smith's Anthology of Folk Music. He just made his own version up in Woodstock unwittingly.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 1:16pm Jeff J:

@Brian - Definitely on the Harry Smith connection, though hard to say how unwitting anything is with Dylan! The newly found 30 tracks recast the Basement Tapes in yet another light. So much to digest.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 1:20pm Jeff Golick:

Going back a bit: SLIDE CRAZY! comp. ist here -- luckylocus.blogspot.com...
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 1:21pm Jeff Golick:

Apologies for the rough segues here, most songs end (and sometimes start) pretty unceremoniously...
  Mon. 1/12/15 1:22pm tr/sh:

Sounds great. Great listening.
What segue?
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 1:23pm Jeff Golick:

Just some rough starts and stops on the tape, is all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 1/12/15 1:24pm Brian in UK:

With The Band there, your palette has all the colours you need.

Jeff G bit like later Monet paintings, after he had got the effect he did not always paint to the borders, why bother. Rough edges. Job done.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 1:28pm Jeff Golick:

Agreed, Brian. Was thinking that's all a producer need worry about, the starts and stops, making them smooth.

I mistyped a playlist for this show as the bastement tapes, and rather like that spoonerism.
  Mon. 1/12/15 1:39pm tr/sh:

Hey, that was one of my intro dj talkover tracks.
Or, get lost listening and often forget to talk bed music.
Talk or listen. Fish or cut bait.
  Mon. 1/12/15 1:40pm tr/sh:

(Lovely album, that, by Michael Moore Trio.)
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 1:40pm Jeff Golick:

Subliminal dj powers in full effect, @tr/sh.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 1:43pm Jeff Golick:

Very lovely. Did a deep dive on their Dylan catalog for a little while there...
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 1:45pm Jeff Golick:

Getting the munchies...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/12/15 1:48pm northguineahills:

Thanks for playing the basement tapes!
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 1:48pm Jeff J:

"It goes something like this" -- the feel of conjuring arrangements from the air, almost.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 1:49pm Jeff J:

@Northguineahills - You're welcome! There's so much weird and fascinating stuff on here. It'll take a while to process it all.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 1:49pm Jeff Golick:

"It goes something like this..." -- launches into song never once performed or written down before.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 1:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Been trying to listen over the noise of my vacuum. Your show made a nice accompaniment at certain points!
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 1:59pm Jeff J:

I think this trombone solo might've been inspired by a vacuum cleaner.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 2:00pm Jeff Golick:

This song turned up again as Romance in Durango.
  Mon. 1/12/15 2:01pm Dean:

Sounds like he's reading the lyrics off a Taco Bell menu.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 2:02pm Jeff J:

@Dean - While on laughing gas. Taco Bell menus haven't been fully explored as inspiration for Dylan lyrics.
  Mon. 1/12/15 2:03pm Dean:

I'm referring, of course, to the old days, when TB provided pronunciation tips (buh-REE-toe). I haven't been in a TB in decades. Maybe all menus have been translated into fluent Dylan.
  Mon. 1/12/15 2:05pm Dean:

"Quid non lusimus in sono tamen?," if Google is reliable, and in lieu of "key," "tone" will work.
  Mon. 1/12/15 2:06pm tr/sh:

Thanks thanks, guys. A Monday unfurling, here.
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 2:08pm Rich in Washington:

Wonderfully Skronky show, Jeff and Jeff!
Mucho thanks!
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 2:08pm Jeff Golick:

Thank ye, @Dean, @tr/sh, and @Rich!
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 2:09pm Jeff J:

Thanks all!
Avatar Mon. 1/12/15 2:09pm Jeff Golick:

@Dean: now we have short stories and essays on Chipotle bags.
  Mon. 1/12/15 2:10pm Dean:

The evolution of the cereal box.
