Are you doing a Christmas special show too, Jeff(s)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:00pm Jeff Golick:

We'll let you decide, @doca! C'mon in!
Avatar Mon. 12/22/14 12:00pm Jeff J:

Hey Doca! Our Christmas show involves no actual Christmas music, but lots of tunes centered around Miles Davis who is the reason for the season, if memory serves?
Avatar Mon. 12/22/14 12:02pm βrian:

Please sir, could you help me scour my dour mien?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:05pm listener james from westwood:

Howdy, Jeff, Jeff, and all!

Feeling more festering than festive ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 12/22/14 12:06pm Uncle Michael:

Happy day-after-Nick-Gilder's-birthday, everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:06pm doca:

@Jeff G: I want a Christmas free jazz special, if I can decide that.
     Mon. 12/22/14 12:07pm 12539:

(is that a Christmas-free jazz-special, or a Christmas free-jazz special?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:07pm doca:

Good point, @12539
Avatar Mon. 12/22/14 12:08pm Jeff J:

Starting with the traditional Betty Davis Christmas Carol

Howdy Listener James, Brian, Uncle Michael, and 12439 - thanks for coming by! Hope you'll enjoy our fireside dreams of On The Corner.

Greetings of the season to one and all! @βrian; @listener james; @Uncle Michael; @12539
  Mon. 12/22/14 12:11pm Dean:

Nick Gilder's birthday was yesterday? Damn, I knew I had something to celebrate. I picked up Barnaby Bye's second album yesterday. Coulda wrapped it up and given it to Nick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:14pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, Dean.

Nick Gilder is outside my every-shrinking field of vision...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 12/22/14 12:15pm Uncle Michael:

I know not from Barnaby Bye but am now downloading three albums by their bad Alessi Brother-selves. Thanks for the provocative mention, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:15pm doca:

I always wondered if that and Peter Brötzmann's Machine Gun have something to do with each other. Imagine a meeting of the two along with the meeting between Hendrix and Miles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 12/22/14 12:15pm Uncle Michael:

There's light at the end of the tunnel, Jeff.

Always assumed that was the oncoming train, UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:17pm Jeff Golick:

Same to you, @duke!
Avatar Mon. 12/22/14 12:19pm Jeff J:

Happy holidays, Duke!
Doca - Love the idea of a meeting of Brötzmann and Jimi over Machine Gun. Though maybe that meeting happens in proxy with Sonny Sharrock in Last Exit?
  Mon. 12/22/14 12:20pm Dean:

BB does feature the Alessi Bros., the most guilty of my pleasures (except when listening to UMHDT, when no pleasures are guilty). But BB also featured Peppy Castro who formed Wiggy Bits when BB split up. WB is another worthy download.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:20pm doca:

You're right, @Jeff J. How come I never thought about it in that way?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 12/22/14 12:21pm Uncle Michael:

added to the queue, Dean. thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:26pm Jeff Golick:

@UM: I was at a bar on Sat. night, and the dj spun one of the funkier cuts undergirding the Hinky Dinky Time intro. I was fully primed to hear the rest -- "ev'ry doggone thing!" -- but alas was not to be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:26pm Jesse K:

greetings sellouts! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 12/22/14 12:27pm Uncle Michael:

I knew it was allover When Miles performed this on American Bandstand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 12/22/14 12:27pm Uncle Michael:

He wasn't even playing live.
  Mon. 12/22/14 12:29pm Dean:

But it has a good beat and is easy to dance to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 12/22/14 12:29pm Uncle Michael:

It just missed out on being the U.S. entry to the Eurovision Song Contest.
Avatar    Mon. 12/22/14 12:32pm duke:

We watched the old Bill Murray movie Scrooged the other night. Miles was in a brief scene as a street musician. My son and I both exclaimed "Holy shit. Is that Miles?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:34pm doca:

Haha I didn't know he was there, @Dean, but he really did a cameo on that movie

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:36pm Jeff Golick:

I love Scrooged.
Avatar Mon. 12/22/14 12:36pm Jeff J:

Doca - Hadn't made the Last Exit/Hendrix connection myself until you mentioned the Machine Gun correlation!

Miles in "Scrooged" - so this show is holiday appropriate!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:37pm doca:

@Jeff G/Jeff J: I was in São Paulo a couple of weeks ago and saw Rob Mazurek's São Paulo Underground with a Danish saxophonist I didn't know. It was an INTENSE concert
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:37pm doca:

To say the least
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:40pm Jeff Golick:

Hey ho ho ho, @jesse!
Avatar Mon. 12/22/14 12:49pm Jeff J:

Would love to see that band live, Doca. Might be some Mazurek in the show's near future too...
Avatar Mon. 12/22/14 12:49pm Jeff J:

Hola Jesse!
  Mon. 12/22/14 12:54pm Dean:

A couple years ago I found a used copy of this Stockhausen LP at the same store where yesterday I purchased Barnaby Bye. For two bucks yesterday I picked up John Hiatt's Bring the Family. I had no idea this was the record that lead to Little Village.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:56pm Jeff Golick:

That store sounds aces, Dean.
  Mon. 12/22/14 12:57pm Dean:

It is. It's Chris Strachwitz's Down Home Records, El Cerrito, CA. The home of Arhoolie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 12:58pm listener james from westwood:

@Jeff: This first hour has been aces!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 1:01pm Jeff Golick:

Aw thanks, @ljfw!
Avatar Mon. 12/22/14 1:03pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi Jeff and hi Jeff.

@Dean
I haven't been to Down Home in 20 years. WFMU's Rex Doane used to work for Chris Strachwitz. OK, I'm out of gossip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 1:05pm Jeff Golick:

@Doug: Hi. More gossip, please.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 12/22/14 1:05pm Uncle Michael:

So much booty being kicked today, Jeffs. I will continue listening in my automobile and be back at the comments in a bit.
  Mon. 12/22/14 1:06pm Dean:

@Doug, I'd bet some of the records you saw there 20 years ago are still there. Or at least the dust that had collected on them.

Once I bought a Bruce Ackley CD (he the A in ROVA) there. The salesperson turned to a female colleague and said, "Look, he's buying your husband's record." Then he told me that Jon Raskin (the R) was in the store, too. No sign of O or V, though.
Avatar Mon. 12/22/14 1:09pm Doug Schulkind:

There used to be the most amazing Salvadoran take-out burrito joint in El Cerrito. Only went there once, but it was memorable. My East Bay-living sister says its closed now.
  Mon. 12/22/14 1:11pm Dean:

Almost directly across the street is a Korean burrito joint, Best Burritos. For the sake of truth in advertising, it should be called Mighty Good Burritos. The owner is a chef trained in Korea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 1:12pm Jeff Golick:

That's a nutty story, Dean. Nutty & lovely.

By coincidence, I think Nutty & Lovely™ is my hair coloring tonic.
  Mon. 12/22/14 1:14pm Dean:

I always assumed the guys in ROVA stuck together. You know, like The Beatles in that documentary, Hard Day's Night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 12/22/14 1:15pm Brian in UK:

Well hey diddle dee.
Avatar Mon. 12/22/14 1:15pm Doug Schulkind:

Who was Helen Butte, anyway?
  Mon. 12/22/14 1:18pm Dean:

Cities in Montana?
  Mon. 12/22/14 1:24pm Dean:

Getting some mileage out of my Down Home visit last night. I decided against purchasing an Arild Anderson mid-2000s ECM disk. The pianist was a Greek guy, but as you pointed out, the sound was predictable. OTOH, there are plenty of ECM releases from the past couple decades that hold their own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 1:28pm Jeff Golick:

The traditional cowbell "Thank you Jesus" solo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 1:32pm Jeff Golick:

Twitter seems to be indicating that we have lost Joe Cocker?
  Mon. 12/22/14 1:34pm Dean:

News, too. "Undisclosed illness." Bummer. RIP.
  Mon. 12/22/14 1:35pm Dean:

Another: "a battle with lung cancer."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 1:44pm doca:

Does this album has anything to do with Dostoevsky's book?
Avatar Mon. 12/22/14 1:45pm Jeff J:

Doc - yes, but also referencing Ralph Ellison and the Underground Man section in Invisible Man
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 1:48pm Jeff Golick:

@doca: you can d/l the CD booklet here - www.bmop.org... - includes notes by Davis and George Lewis
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 1:50pm doca:

Oh nice, never heard Ralph Ellison's book, though I should do it. Thanks for the booklet, @Jeff G!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 1:52pm doca:

Thanks for the show, by the way. Have to go. See ya all later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 1:53pm Jeff Golick:

Bye, @doca! Happy happy merry merry etc.!

Thank you Thank you Happy Happy Jeff Jeff!
Avatar Mon. 12/22/14 1:57pm Jeff J:

Glad you liked it, Northguineahills. The whole record is killer.
  Mon. 12/22/14 1:59pm Dean:

This Wollesen et al. disk brings to mind much earlier stuff, namely the Clemencic Consort's several disks of Carmina Burana: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3coQUDanATk I gather Rasa Rasa is Lithuanian, where CB comes from further south and west. But the party vibe is there.
Avatar Mon. 12/22/14 2:00pm Helen Butte:

That show rocked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 2:00pm northguineahills:

Damn, it's 2! I played once w/ Wollesen once upon a time. Not familar w/ the others, but that was a great track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 2:01pm listener james from westwood:

Many thanks, gents!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 2:03pm Jesse K:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 12/22/14 2:04pm Jeff Golick:
