I am so looking forward to this.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 11:52am Tony Coulter:

Hi there, Kay!
  Tue. 11/25/14 11:56am Marc:

Play some hissy Rascal Reporters!
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 11:57am Tony Coulter:

Farre out, man! (Hey, Marc!)
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 11:59am Tony Coulter:

Unfortunately, the fi of today's first tape (John Livengood) is pretty lo, though it does get better on some tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/25/14 12:00pm Carmichael:

Hiya Tony and Coulterians. Daddy loves his lo-fi.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:00pm V Priceless:

Hey Tony! FMU schedule changes, and I forgot about my Tuesday commitment here - senior moment - sheesh!
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Lo-fi, high-hum, I smell the blood of a Tape Hiss, man!
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:02pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Carmichael, V Priceless and Doug!

It is pleasantly strange to be (seemingly) immune to schedule changes.
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 12:03pm holland oats:

tony // peeps // hullo!
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 12:04pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

fi is over-rated.
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 12:04pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

YO, fokes!
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:05pm pierre:

Bonjour Tony Coulter and folks
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

Hey ho hiya, Holland O, Turnip & Pierre!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/25/14 12:07pm Carmichael:

From Prog Archives: "Best known for his involvement in the legendary band Spacecraft, john livengood released a few curiosities in solo. His work is mainly devoted to synthesizer's experimentations. his first solo effort published during the early 80's is a strange and original combination between hypnotic-efficiently repetitive pop melodies and unusual programmed electronic arrangements. Livengood has also collaborated with the guitarist Richard Pinhas (Heldon) for the album Cyborg Sally (1994). "
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:09pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Carmichael!

Apologies again for the lo fi-ness. It does get better further on in the tape.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

... and, of course, this is just how the tape is.
  Tue. 11/25/14 12:10pm ZRW:

Sounds just fine to me!
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

Heya ZRW! Glad to hear it!
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:11pm Rich in Washington:

it sounds fine to me. It's got some of the inherent mixing choices one now fondly remembers from the 4-track cassette machine era; things hard-panned to either left or right, etc..
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

The Livengood cassette, of course, is the one on the left in the pic above the playlist.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:13pm Tony Coulter:

Heya Rich! Yeah, the panning on this track is a bit extreme!
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:18pm Rich in Washington:

It's wonderful. I love this kind of Electronic Music.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:20pm Tony Coulter:

The Spacecraft album is tops: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

The other member of Spacecraft (Ivan Coaquette) was also in MEV.
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 12:24pm βrian:

A friend's young daughter — on seeing the overhead cab lights of the snow plow silently appear though the swirling snow: "Oooooh. Spaceship!"
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, βrian! Might as well think positive when the aliens arrive.
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 12:28pm βrian:

My great great great grandparents emigrated here from Vegon during the great Xylon famine. We're all aliens at root.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:32pm Tony Coulter:

I'm almost a full-blooded Vegon -- it's just that I do eat fish occasionally.
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 12:37pm βrian:

Aye, I have the same weakness. And we're having octopus for Thanksgiving … (A midwest tradition, in my book.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 11/25/14 12:38pm DCE:

finally I am here. Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/25/14 12:38pm Carmichael:

I'm having football for Thanksgiving. And ale.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:38pm Tony Coulter:

@ βrian: Hmm. Octopus and cranberry sauce ... I don't know about that.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:39pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, DCE! Glad you made it.
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 12:40pm βrian:

Oh no? Think of a cranberry chutney, with the octopus marinated in fresh orange juice, garlic, and rosemary. For example ...
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:44pm Tony Coulter:

I'd eat a rubber tire if it was smothered in garlic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/25/14 12:47pm Carmichael:

As long as everyone else eats it. I don't want to be the only one reeking.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:49pm Tony Coulter:

I *like* the smell of garlic. I'd wear a garlic cologne, if they made one.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:51pm pierre:

this is very sweet
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 12:51pm Tony Coulter:

Glad you like it, Pierre!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 11/25/14 1:00pm DCE:

merging perfectly with my noisy printer, thx tony
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:03pm Tony Coulter:

Music to press print by....
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:08pm Tony Coulter:

In case any eyeballs are just tuning in, the focus of today's Tape Hiss is progressive electronic/new age cassettes.
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 1:08pm βrian:

What do they call it, the stinking rose?
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:09pm Tony Coulter:

Garlic? Garlic by any other name would stink as sweet.
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 1:12pm βrian:

It's a good stink, not a vertiginous-retching-horror kind of stink.
  Tue. 11/25/14 1:13pm MrFab:

Hi y'all!
Brian, we have a garlic-themed restaurant here in LA called the Stinking Rose. I even drank a garlic martini there.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

Ni hao, MrFab!
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:15pm northguineahills:

Why does Ian MacFarlane sound familiar?
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:16pm Tony Coulter:

Dunno, NGH. I have played this LP of his on past shows, tho it's been years: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:17pm Tony Coulter:

... and greets, btw.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:19pm Tony Coulter:

One garlic-related trick I learned in high school: Garlic extract rubbed into your armpits will induce a temporary fever. It's a great way to get out of school early.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:21pm northguineahills:

I must have read about him about an article on "essential" new age releases.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:21pm northguineahills:

btw, totally digging MacFarlane.
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 1:25pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

korean taco truck has been beaten into submission. Staying put now. Yay this.
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 1:27pm βrian:

Our bi-bim-bap burrito truck vamoosed at the first sign of snow. Alack.
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 1:31pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

βrian: that's completely unacceptable.
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 1:33pm βrian:

The lack of kimchi leaves me breathless, so to speak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 11/25/14 1:34pm DCE:

forget food, eat sine waves
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/25/14 1:36pm Carmichael:

A unique review of MacFarlane's music from the Mutant Sounds blogspot: "Wonderful and endearingly rinky dink Dr. Who-ish one-man space rock/electronic oddity and part of an unacknowledged (and rather late arriving) late 70's/early 80's Aussie cosmic rock scene that also included Rainbow Generator/Krozier & The Generator, Quasar and (ahem) Cybotron."
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

Sounds like a review of the 1980 LP "Back from Beyond"?
  Tue. 11/25/14 1:40pm Dimsdale:

What is Vdo/Eric/Ex-Mutant S. up To Now?
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:41pm Tony Coulter:

He made a major cross-country move, which I imagine kept him pretty occupied for a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/25/14 1:41pm Carmichael:

Could be, Tony. It was just thrown into MacFarlane's description.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:42pm Tony Coulter:

... oh, and greetings Dimsdale...
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:50pm Tony Coulter:

As I just mentioned on-mic, Xaliman was/is a member of Melodic Energy Commission: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 1:51pm Tony Coulter:

... a group that Del Dettmar of Hawkwind also joined....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 11/25/14 2:01pm Carmichael:

Jerome Jarvis, who played drums on this tape, has a website out there: recordingsunlimited.com...
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 2:03pm Tony Coulter:

Interesting! Thanks, Carmichael!
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 2:19pm northguineahills:

New Age, the genre that is the final frontier for crate diggers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 11/25/14 2:21pm DCE:

when 90s 70s revisionism becomes a crate digging fad we'll know we've had it
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 2:22pm βrian:

But I thought newage was a particular kind of effluent.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 2:22pm northguineahills:

I love the sound of 80s digital synths.
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 2:28pm northguineahills:

What about 00s 80s revisionism in crate digging fads?
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 2:29pm V Priceless:

Yay Daevid Allen!
  Tue. 11/25/14 2:32pm PHP:

Listen to I See You-2014 Gong Freaks "All Is One & One Is You"
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 11/25/14 2:32pm DCE:

I've heard good things about the new Gong record (from a die-hard lifer fan, of course)
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 2:33pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, PHP!
Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 2:36pm Tony Coulter:

One amazing thing about Daevid Allen is the continuity of his output. This thing is from 1966, but would fit in with recordings of his from any period.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 11/25/14 2:41pm DCE:

pretty visionary for '66 indeed
  Tue. 11/25/14 2:52pm Dimsdale:

This pariah/fish is a most delicious holiday treat.
Avatar    Tue. 11/25/14 2:56pm βrian:

Avatar Tue. 11/25/14 2:59pm Tony Coulter:
