Hey everybody, I am happy to announce here/anywhere for the first time: The great STEINSKI has produced a new hour-long radio show and it will be airing here on the Drummer Stream at 3pm on October 10. (As old WFMU colleague Laura Cantrell would say) Mark it in your mind...

Avatar Mon. 9/29/14 12:54pm Doug Schulkind:

Here is kind of a weird observation: Arthur Blythe has always played with such a wildly oscillating vibrato. Sort of the way one could imagine a sax player with Parkinson's might sound.

Blessings unto Arthur Blythe

The odd thing, was that I was at the Bunker techno party at the same venue the night before for a belated bachelor party. Odd how a venue can be so different w/in 14 hours of each other.

Arthur Blythe, aka Black Arthur, aka Black Arthur Blythe.
Avatar Mon. 9/29/14 1:01pm Doug Schulkind:

I have always blamed Columbia Records for the dropping of "Black" from Blythe's nom de stage "Black Arthur Blythe." I have absolutely no knowledge of any major-label pressure on the radicalisation of the name, and yet I assign blame unreservedly.

Avatar Mon. 9/29/14 1:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Didn't Blythe also record "In the Tradition" for Columbia? Amiri Baraka wrote a poem called "In the Tradition: For Black Arthur Blythe." That poem was released on the India Navigation LP "New Music—New Poetry" featuring David Murray and Steve McCall backing up Baraka's recitation. Here: www.discogs.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/29/14 2:21pm Jeff Golick:

@doca, my man! Nothing better.

The *only* thing that could have improved the Threadgill event was if HT himself got up and played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/29/14 2:26pm doca:

@Jeff: Just came to my mind: Air can be understood as an earlier version of Trio X. Both bands feature stellar players and are devoted to recreating or working with traditional blues music in a new jazz spirit. And both are good as hell.

I don't know, but I guess those sort of things weren't the most usual in the 70s NY jazz scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 9/29/14 2:30pm Jeff Golick:

Good point, doca!

One of the main points (subterranean, mostly) of D:O, when it was an active site, was the continuity between New Thing (etc.) and Old Things.

  Mon. 9/29/14 2:46pm John in England:

I mentioned it because she has the form of Parkinson's that makes you freeze up rather than shake (something I didn't know about). Assumptions about vibrato can be wide of the mark.
Avatar Mon. 9/29/14 2:48pm Doug Schulkind:

@John in England
In case you were wondering, I was making no assumption that Blythe's vibrato was due to Parkinson's. I am aware of the timeline and have been enjoying AB's particular sound long before his current diagnosis.

Interesting note about the "freezing" variety of Parkinson's. Never heard of that.
