I nominate this show already for a future rerun episode, as I haven't been able to listen to much of this loveliness this busy morning. In fact I gotta leave my desk again. Can you hit 'pause' on the tape deck for, like, 5 minutes, Tony?

Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 12:54pm βrian:

Mine was Lao-inflected, so it would surely throw off the calibration.
  Tue. 9/30/14 12:58pm MrFab:

This tape is nicely Residents-y.

The Question Of The Day: When (and why) did The Residents jump the shark? I suggest after 'Stars & Hank Forever' in '86, afterwards they seem to have lost their sense of humor, and became overly reliant on routine synth sounds. Prove me wrong!
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:00pm still b/p:

For no graspable reason, it struck me right away that "Was your Thai food robot-tested?" would fit nicely in the lyric meter of Eno's song, Miss Shapiro.
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:00pm Tony Coulter:

@ MrFab: For me, the Residential rot had already set in by "George & James." They got lazy -- and too reliant on samplers.
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:09pm Tony Coulter:

@ still b/p: I can also hear Laurie Anderson archly intoning those words.
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:15pm βrian:

Speaking of rot, there's a fun Updike poem: Ode to Rot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 9/30/14 1:25pm DCE:

pretty cool stuff here, Tony
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:28pm Tony Coulter:

So, next week's program will a special themed show -- but it's kind of hard for me to put the theme in words. Everything will be from the '80s (with an occasional late '70s outlier) and will be from the U.S. There will be lots of new wave and some power pop. It'll be heavy on self-released and regional/small-label stuff.
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:28pm Tony Coulter:

@ DCE: Glad you approve!!
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:34pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I'm with Tony on the Residential Rot. The American Composer Series felt like a disposable basement-tapes project. I'll take anything up to that point. My first exposure to their sound was Eskimo, so that has a special place in my heart valves.
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:35pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I have close comrades that swear it's all good up to the elvis record, but that one really didn't work on me ay-tall.

However: 'not available' is one of the finest works of all humankind.
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:36pm listener james from westwood:

Looking forward to the untheme-abale show! Small and regional ought to be a lot of fun. As is today's show!
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:37pm Rich in Washington:

I have read somewhere that the Residential Rot started with the sudden departure of 50% of the founding members. Somewhere around The Commercial Album.
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:38pm Tony Coulter:

Here is the I Scream tracklist: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:39pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

@Rich - that sounds right. The tide pulled away gradually after that point. I did dig the mole show "extraneous" ep (intermission) but that's about it on the timeline, i think..
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:39pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Yeah, I'm sure departing members had a lot to do with the decline as well.
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:42pm Rich in Washington:

I think sometimes concepts just have a halflife of their own. I have to say, some of the Residents recent instrumental albums are quite nice on their own. Nothing spectacular, but nice and interesting listening. I can't really follow their proper albums, really. The storyteller stuff. I think it's kind of worn out.
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:44pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

alas, need to vacate for a meeting at 2pm, i fear no Bene Gesserit for the clergy... [cue depressing sigh]
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:47pm Tony Coulter:

Without receiving the Bene Gesserit wafer, your flock may be doomed to eternal tarnation. Oh well, can't save 'em all.
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:47pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

whoa, that flute line was right off "children of the sun" from the 2nd hawkwind record. Nice flashbacky.
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:50pm Tony Coulter:

The funny thing about a tape like this, if this had come out on vinyl when it was recorded (mid-'70s), say on Brain or sumpin', it'd probably be fairly well known and appreciated. Being on cassette, it pretty much vanished without a trace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 9/30/14 1:50pm DCE:

really a shame, it's too good to disappear
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 9/30/14 1:50pm DCE:

you're doing the lord's work here, Tony
  Tue. 9/30/14 1:52pm MrFab:

One reason I pushed the golden age to '86 was the "Kaw-Liga" 12" that used MJ's "Billie Jean" beat, one of the first mashups I ever heard. i'm sure that must have had some kind of impact on me.

Tony, perhaps the concept for next week's show can be boiled down to: "DIY New Wave"? One of my fave genres, so really looking forward to that one.
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:55pm Tony Coulter:

@ MrFab: Yeah, that is kind of the concept of next week's show -- except there will also be a smattering of power pop, and a wee bit of failed major-label new wave. Nothing avant or harsh, though -- just fun in the '80s sun.
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 1:57pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

i can dig that.
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 2:01pm still b/p:

And we should dress appropriately?
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 2:01pm Tony Coulter:

Definitely! Shades and fashionable angst are required.

I'm gonna be either rereading the novel or rewatching the Lynch adaptation by the end of the day, I suspect. :)
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 2:58pm Tony Coulter:

I learned that Frank Herbert pronounces "Gesserit"with a hard 'g' -- but Bene Gesserit the band pronounces it with a soft 'g' ... so that's what I'm sticking to.
  Tue. 9/30/14 2:58pm Santos L Halper:

Ljfw: go for the re-read. Unless you just need a laugh
  Tue. 9/30/14 2:59pm Santos L Halper:

Better yet the Jodorowsky flick. Surely that must be out on disc or metflixbu now? It's great
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 3:01pm Tony Coulter:

See you everyone! Thanks for showing up!
Avatar Tue. 9/30/14 3:02pm listener james from westwood:

Too bad we never got Herbert to opine on the GIF/GIF pronunciation debate.
@Santos: I owe myself a viddy at the Jodorowsky film for sure. I have a soft spot for the baroque mess that is the Lynch film. Plus we'll never see another sci-fi film with that many practical (vs. CGI) effects again.

Many thanks, Tony; looking fwd to the Oct specials!
