I was tortured... I had friends that thought it would be funny to bring me to some Dead cover show at the Winter Garden Theater years ago. I was told we were going to hear some live music, which I was excited for. As we near the place, I start seeing a lot of tie dye. I smell a lot of patchouli. I start to get scared and say- ummmm, what's with all the hippies? In the end I won. I made it miserable for them and they realized that it is not fun to be around those people for an experiment to see how I would react. Why torture someone who adamantly hates that music?

The irony of the Dead is: they did an end-run (ugh - sports metaphor) around the Strictures of Pop Music: Album-Hit-Tour - & just did there own thing - & succeeded ! - a whole SubCulture of their own, really
- & then - became an Institution & a Grind all their own (summa them Deadheads - yeah - seriously)
...not a DeadHater by any means - but can you imagine if, say, King Crimson played that much - ?! They'd get so tight they'd Apotheosize the Human Race & we'd all disappear...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19am

the Dead aren't tight! They forgot what they were doing half the time. I'm not saying it shouldn't exist.... I am saying it's not for me. I hate it. I know people hate Nick Cave who I adore. There is something for everyone!

Some people get sensitive when some of us express our honest opinion. OTOH, there are some frequent commenters who are often dissing something and, for whatever reason, no one piles on them. @Dave B: Yeah, the worse for me are the people without enough sense of self they only like and dislike whatever someone(s) they worship likes or dislikes. I have no patience for that toady behavior.

And anyone who says their preferences are not influenced by circumstance -- like what you were doing, how old you were, etc., when you first hear a song or group -- is lying to him/herself. I know there are things I will never dislike because of when and how I found it, but can also recognize how someone happening on it at this day and age would *not* like it.

@kat: I also can't stand people who only listen to one genre of music, or say out and out that they don't listen to this or that genre because "it's all crap". Limiting yourself with artificial definitions is foolish. Chances are, there's something you'll like in every genre of music (and something you hate, too), so why close something off without even trying it.

Or any crazed fans that go berserk if anyone dares say anything that might be considered a slight of their idol. 12-year-olds en masse threatening to kill people for retweeting a negative news report about Bieber? The recent glut of fans who go nuts if anyone dares suggest that "Queen Bey" is not an omnipotent, perfect deity? Sheesh.

Seriously, I think there's a little bit of snobbery here...
Like in WFMU-land there's a prejudice that any act that's had some big hit records and gotten a ridiculous amount of airplay and exposure couldn't really be that good...
if the Heartbreakers, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, etc. were relatively obscure bands sopported primarily by cult followings, but their records sounded exactly the same, they'd be respected and even championed here......just sayin'.

listener james from westwood:

Meghan, thanks for the Boston Phoenix love. As a Boston College undergrad I always looked forward to the big stacks of Phoenixes that would appear in the student commons before each weekend. It filled me in on so many local cultural options that I'd have had no other way of finding out about, barring visiting each venue every night (which was indeed a temptation).

i've played both steely dan and fleetwood mac (yes, stevie lindsey mac). there might be a bit of fmu snobbery but only a bit of a bit. i'd argue less so than at lots of "nonmainstream" stations.

Caryn:

@RRN63: oh, I don't know. Queen always put on a great live show at the same time as sounding very much like their records. Especially with the amount of overproduction and autotune being used, if someone manages to reproduce their recorded sound live, I'm more impressed than upset. It just proves they actually have musical ability. (This does not include those acts that "reproduce their recorded sound" by miming.)

@P-90: Again, we're sharing a soapbox, only I'd increase it from "a little bit" in certain corners. If people just go with their honest gut instead of what they read or what they're told, I think they'd be surprised time and again with what they actually like.

...wrong emphasis maybe: some Petty tunes I really like - too much Byrds & stuff in it for me to resist
...I call myself Anti-Populist - I'm sick of what's Overplayed - & that's basic to what used to be called 'Alternative' - which like 'New Wave' was the polite version of Punk, probably...
- & it'd be weird if there's none of that in the FreeForm Community (...or - whatever it is)
- why most of us are here - to hear something else...

...Queen are an interesting example: their Abilities to both Rawk - & Record - are unequivocal. It happens that their earlier stuff is more to my taste than what got in the Top40 later.
- also - playing 'clean' & precise whilst Rawking is kinda their speciality specifically...
