Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 9:03pm Dave Mandl:

Evening, all.
  Sun. 8/31/14 9:05pm Carmichael:

Caught you at the beginning, for once Dave. Ready for music fun, and the throng of bbq friends are listening. But no pressure ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 9:06pm JakeGould:

Hey Dave. Read about WFMU not having a Marshal Tucker Band song. That seems unpossible.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 9:09pm Dave Mandl:

Hey there Carmichael, Jake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:10pm Uncle Michael:

Holy mackerel.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 9:10pm Dave Mandl:

@Jake: I'm guessing we have some Marshall Tucker in the basement, where records get bumped when we run out of room in the main library. Didn't have time to go down there, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:10pm Uncle Michael:

No MYB? Forfend! Green grass and high tides FOREVER.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:11pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:13pm pacific standard simon:

I'm back. Whoopee.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 9:14pm Dave Mandl:

@PSS: Hey! And evening UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:15pm pacific standard simon:

Perhaps UM will remedy that situation when he does the Unofficial Loss Leaders Show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:22pm pacific standard simon:

I confess -- I listened to The Best of The Moody Blues all the way through, yesterday, and did not find the experience entirely unpleasant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:26pm Uncle Michael:

MTB are represented in the outtakes, for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 9:26pm JakeGould:

PSS, sounds like my experience with Blue Oyster Cult sat week… Except I visibly “bleeeched” when it was over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:29pm Uncle Michael:

Interesting...tenor guitar is an actual, specific instrument.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:30pm Uncle Michael:

Howard Devoto?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:31pm Uncle Michael:

n/m I'm embarrassed now
  Sun. 8/31/14 9:31pm Carmichael:

The Magazines. Now we're talking!
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 9:31pm Dave Mandl:

@UM: Yup. And you're right about tenor guitars. I once saw a tenor version of a Fender Telecaster, a pretty rare thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:32pm pacific standard simon:

BOC is one of those bands, like ZZ Top, whose official best-ofs would never match what I would put together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:34pm Uncle Michael:

I'm really only familiar with tenor guitars as acoustic instruments. A tenor tele sounds pretty neat-o.
  Sun. 8/31/14 9:34pm Carmichael:

HEEP!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:34pm pacific standard simon:

The range of ukuleles is: soprano, concert, tenor and baritone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:35pm BDR:

Wayback Machine! Quick, reach for the Yes, you can have heaven.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:37pm Siriusly:

I was gonna bet Captain Beyond, should'a known, had all the Heep records
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 9:37pm JakeGould:

Well, Blue Oyster Cult is just too… I dunno… Rush is juvenile & can tolerate them based on that… Blue Oyster Cult is just so… Post adolescent yet not mature. I can’t stand it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:40pm pacific standard simon:

Jake - Think of it as "comedy metal" -- THEY did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 9:43pm JakeGould:

That term “Comedy Metal” seems vile. Like all of the sudden Kevin DuBrow is on stage, turns around & is wearing a Groucho Nose/Glasses/Mustache thing… Because that’s comedy! God that term! Thank you for coining it but so vile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:43pm Uncle Michael:

There's non-comedy metal?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 9:44pm northguineahills:

David Cheworth, that was nice!
  Sun. 8/31/14 9:44pm Carmichael:

You buncha punks wouldn't know rock if it bit you in the underwear. Actually, you're right about Rush. But BOC are the saviors of western civilization! You can't play them in Russia. And you can't lay rubber in front of the Dairy Queen either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 9:46pm JakeGould:

Carmichael, you don't tug on Superman's cape… You don't spit into the wind… You don’t pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger… And you don't mess around with Dairy Queen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:47pm Uncle Michael:

Nice Midwestern t-storm about to hit. Nostalgic, Simon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:47pm pacific standard simon:

I gotta eat supper.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 9:48pm JakeGould:

Uncle Michael, we had a severe rain alert or something like that here in NYC/NJ area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:49pm pacific standard simon:

Very. I love those things. Summer of '81, tornado tore the roof of the Lawrence K Mart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:49pm Uncle Michael:

I'll take Shakti for my McLaughlin fix, usually...but I liked that Mahavishnu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:49pm Uncle Michael:

Tear the roof off the sucker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:51pm Uncle Michael:

In 1971-1972, Tull was the best ban I'd ever heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:53pm Uncle Michael:

I didn't stop loving that band till War Child. I'm not a big fan anymore but I still play the early stuff sometimes.
     Sun. 8/31/14 9:56pm 12539:

Late, but not too late for the Tull.
  Sun. 8/31/14 9:56pm ?:

horrific recordings lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 9:56pm JakeGould:

When did Tull really degrade? 1980s? Or 1990s? Wasn’t there a “jtull.com” album?
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 9:56pm Dave Mandl:

Check out live footage from 1970-ish. Unbelievably hot live band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:56pm Uncle Michael:

I think "Benefit" was the first cassette tape I ever owned. My cousin Peter gave it to me for Hanukkah.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 9:57pm Dave Mandl:

I stuck with them a lot longer than most people, till maybe '78. After that it was a rapid decline.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 9:58pm Uncle Michael:

I think Tull, before Anderson decided it wasn't to be a guitar band, is really underrated.

Are we contemporaries, Dave? I'm 54. I never saw them live till '79...and then only out of curiosity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 9:59pm JakeGould:

Kind of sad how bands tear on past their prime. Pressures.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:02pm SSS:

I saw them in '72. They were great! Isn't Ian A. running a smoked salmon business? For many years now.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:02pm Dave Mandl:

UM: I started going to concerts very young, so I saw them in the early '70s. By '79 I'd stopped following them.
  Sun. 8/31/14 10:02pm Carmichael:

I saw Tull live 4 times between about 73 to 81 or so. I always thought they were a powerful live act. But I'm from Ireland, and that style of music is way more popular there than here.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:03pm Dave Mandl:

@SSS: Yeah, a salmon farm in Scotland. One of the biggest salmon companies in the world, I think, if not the biggest.
  Sun. 8/31/14 10:04pm Carmichael:

Great, now I want some dalmon.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:04pm SSS:

I think it so cool to just keep moving....
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:04pm Uncle Michael:

I'd stopped following them too. But in '79 I seemed to go to every show. Having once loved them, I went. My concert history begins in '72 but alas, I didn't catch the Thick As A Brick tour.
  Sun. 8/31/14 10:05pm Carmichael:

*salmon
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:05pm Dave Mandl:

@Carmichael: I've got an older sister who exposed me to all that stuff. She used to see Tull at the Fillmore, and they supposedly kicked ass. There's some footage floating around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:12pm pacific standard simon:

Back again, with no Tull stories at all. Never saw them. Still like a lot of the pre-1971 stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:14pm pacific standard simon:

Dave, you could pepper your show with Eric Carbonara tracks, and see if anybody gets the joke!
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:14pm SSS:

My older sister and her first husband wanted to take me to see Zappa at the Filmore for my birthday, but my parents stopped it for, fear that some "would stick a needle in my arm". After hearing that I bought my own tickets.
  Sun. 8/31/14 10:15pm Carmichael:

@Dave: Fillmore East, I presume? I saw many concerts in SF, at the original Fillmore.
  Sun. 8/31/14 10:15pm Jamie Farr:

Jethro Tull were awful. just sayin'.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:16pm Dave Mandl:

@Carmichael: Yeah, NYC.
@Jamie: Fair comment.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:16pm SSS:

Yep, east coast boy by and large.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:18pm SSS:

You must remember, we were teen age boys. They were great!
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:22pm SSS:

Lucid.... he he... he said lucid......
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:23pm pacific standard simon:

I think he meant "ludicrous".
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:23pm amEdeo:

@pacific standard simon: 100 thumbs up for your avatar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:25pm pacific standard simon:

Thanks. BTW, if whoever it was who wanted to see my Elvis pajamas (a few weeks ago) is here, that picture is now up on my user page.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:26pm Dave Mandl:

Ha, that is a great avatar. I only looked at it up close just now.
  Sun. 8/31/14 10:26pm rw:

Hello Dave and all. Dave, thanks for coming in on Labor Day weekend!
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:27pm Dave Mandl:

Hiya, rw. And WELCOME, Mr. amEdeo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 10:28pm JakeGould:

So now that you are all nostalgic about concerts & NYC, did anyone here go to concerts at an old movie theater in Borough Park that now structurally is still around but a Hassidic furniture warehouse? I shit you not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:29pm pacific standard simon:

I recommend the current version of Ms Marvel, set in Jersey City. The villain has a cockatiel head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:30pm Uncle Michael:

I've never been to Jersey City. If I correct that oversight, I won't mess.
  Sun. 8/31/14 10:30pm Carmichael:

Jake, are they the Sofa Kings?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 10:30pm JakeGould:

I’ve been to Jersey City & thinking of moving there.
  Sun. 8/31/14 10:31pm rw:

Although DM's story about JT's bass player is a little sad, I have a half-baked theory that the more correctly one lives one's life the more frequently these sorts of coincidences occur.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 10:32pm JakeGould:

Sofa Kings? Not 100% sure. Will dig up some specifics on the Google now.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:32pm Dave Mandl:

@Jake: Ha, of course. It was originally the Loews 46th St., then became Bananafish Garden. I saw a few shows there when I was a teenager.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:33pm pacific standard simon:

'I've never been to Jersey City, but I kinda like the music.'
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:33pm Dave Mandl:

I believe it was also called the Rock Palace for a while, but that's before my time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:34pm Uncle Michael:

Bananafish are trayf.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 10:34pm JakeGould:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:36pm Uncle Michael:

I've been to Oklahoma.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:37pm pacific standard simon:

Not Arizona?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:37pm Uncle Michael:

What does it matter?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:38pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 10:39pm JakeGould:

And here is more. Thanks for jogging my memory of a that place. cinematreasures.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:40pm Uncle Michael:

"Harmony" was probably one of the first three albums I owned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:42pm Uncle Michael:

Dave, this is just exactly the chill out I needed tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:43pm pacific standard simon:

I've never owned a Three Dog Night album, but a hell of a lot of their songs are burned into my memory. They had great taste in songs to cover, and turned me on to a lot of songwriters.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:43pm Dave Mandl:

@UM: At your service.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 10:45pm northguineahills:

That Christina Carter was excellent!

pss: Those are some kick-ass Elvis pajama pants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:47pm pacific standard simon:

Whoah, you beat me to the punch, Michael! That's great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:49pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks. You can see there were a few where there was no version available by the actual songwriter.
Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 10:49pm Dave Mandl:

@ngh: Glad you liked it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:50pm Uncle Michael:

And I've never tracked down the Sammy Davis version of Black & White.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:51pm pacific standard simon:

You should keep it in mind for your next marathon premium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:52pm Uncle Michael:

Hmmm...that wouldn't be cheating?
  Sun. 8/31/14 10:52pm marmalade kitty:

Great show, Dave! (oops! I claim the?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:52pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:55pm Uncle Michael:

There's a little "theme from a summer place" in this melody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:56pm pacific standard simon:

Heh, this song is funny.
     Sun. 8/31/14 10:57pm 12539:

I heard a little "Brazil" as well, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 10:59pm pacific standard simon:

Gettin' all this chat in now; gotta go see a movie about a monosyllabic tree and an automatic-weapon-toting raccoon in a couple of minutes.
  Sun. 8/31/14 11:00pm trs:

Was that the John Scott? Or, are there many 'John Scott', organists, I wonder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 11:00pm JakeGould:

My condolences, PSS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 11:00pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Sun. 8/31/14 11:10pm dfb:

  Sun. 8/31/14 11:14pm Carmichael:

I gotta go see a man about a horse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 8/31/14 11:15pm Andrew Waterloo:

I'm surprised anyone would mistake a flying squirrel and a moose for a raccoon and a tree, but I guess we can't all be Canadian ;)
  Sun. 8/31/14 11:17pm BB:

Moose and squirrel? Here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 8/31/14 11:19pm northguineahills:

Kevin Drumm & Martin Tetrault, a good pairing.
