All this makes me wish I was driving in a car. With the radio blasting. Hopefully it would be, like, a rural road, so I wouldn't have to worry about other cars. But there's still the deer. Always gotta worry about the deer. And jack rabbits. They're huge.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:17am KP:

So Nico is country rock?
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:17am Joe McG:

@Stashu: I want to upgrade you to a pick-up truck for this trip!
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:18am DJ Stashu:

Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:19am northguineahills:

It's funny how I avoided Southern Rock in my youth b/c it was omnipresent, then once I moved to NYC, I had to get some SR vinyl, b/c something was missing from my daily ambiance.

  Thu. 8/21/14 9:30am Bill Faulkner:

Say... This show is catchy.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:31am Joe McG:

@Brian: Yes, anything southerly. Buckacre may be the one exception, but it's SO Southern Rock, we'll give Illinois honorary status today.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:33am beavoux:

Toledo? No that would be south of the Ohio River, Cincinatti

I've been to the Illinois river valley. Yep. South.

I expect the playlist is already set, but for the record, the Brothers number that still sends me into orbit is "Mem. of Elizabeth Reed".

There was a guy in Australia named Billy Thorpe who was kind of great and sounded very southern rock.

Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:39am PKNY:

@DeaconDave - BOA *is* southern rock!
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:39am duke:

I grew up in the heart of Pennsyltucky. Southern rock was BIG down there when I was young, along with metal and soul. I was into soul mostly, so this stuff is kind of new to me.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:39am Marcel M:

Bob... that is an amazing cover hahahhahahha
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:39am KP:

Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:41am Greg from Bloomfield:

I missed Beaverteeth! God dam it.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:42am KP:

I saw Black Oak Arkansas long time ago. Yeah, they were like Southern Metal, same thing sort of.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:42am Jeff:

I went through an odd phase in my youth (well, many, but I speak of one on particular): for awhile, I decided I didn't like vocals.

During that time, the Dixie Dregs were my particular jam.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:43am βrian:

I saw the Black Oak Arkansas tour bus once. That was good enough for me.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:43am Joe McG:

@KP: No Brits today. Being very purist! There will be BOA. Soon.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:44am sphere:

its odd, but i find that a fair amount of Southern Rock has a Dead-ish feel.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:45am Joe McG:

@sphere: A bit, yeah! A lot of them were hippies.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:45am βrian:

I had a different problem with vocals. I could hear them only as music, not language. I was always astounded that people would hear — and remember — lyrics.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:46am Parq:

I remember that the two groups had overlapping fan bases
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:46am bobdoesthings:

@sphere - also feels oddly like white people trying to do gospel
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:46am common:

i am now 8 years old...again.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:47am northguineahills:

redneck hippies are a particular breed. Many are pretty cool, but some embody the worse of both stereotypes.

Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:53am Joe McG:

@beavoux: Ha ha ha!
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:53am bobdoesthings:

some of this stuff is bringing back memories of when Tom Scharpling would play Pig Pen from the Dead. and then rant about how bad pig pen was.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:54am PKNY:

To me, ZZ Top transcends Southern Rock, but I will never complain about hearing them in any context.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:54am KP:

Brian, having seen them, you said it!
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:54am beavoux:

@joe I forgot to put a comma there. And who they opened for.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:55am northguineahills:

Against my better judgement, faving this epispde.

Pig Pen was one of the better influences on the Dead.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:55am Brian in UK:

I moved from New Brunswick, NJ, to southeastern Va. in late summer of '76, at the start of freshman year of high school. Got an instant immersion in Southern rock.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:57am KP:

ZZ Top might look like dirtbags but they are not Southern Rock. For one thing all of them are still alive.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:58am beavoux:

Yeah, Texas is South but also West of the Mississppi, it's real different there than say Georgia.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:58am d¢ pät:

ZZ Top will always be the Moving Sidewalks to me...
  Thu. 8/21/14 9:58am herb.nyc:

So, is Diane Kamikaze here yet? I JOKE! This stuff is alien to me, but i can groove to it.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:58am Marcel M:

I never thought of ZZ in the southern rock context, but it makes sense. I think it fits... Texas schmexus... its all down there!
  Thu. 8/21/14 9:59am Santos L Halper:

Hey Joe! Will have to mostly listen on archive, but looks like plenty of gems that I missed growing up down here in Dixie. Y'oughtta make this a yearly show IMO. Play it pretty!
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 9:59am KP:

A guy i knew was huge Molly Hatchet fan. He would proudly claim they were the first southern rock band to have every member croak.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:00am beavoux:

I'm seeing ZZ in a couple of weeks with Jeff Beck in ATL.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:00am Joe McG:

Will do, Santos!
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:01am Marcel M:

There is a "rig rundown" video from Premier Guitar on Billy Gibbons, and it takes place at Kid Rock's house, and at the end they do a little jam with Kid Rock... its pretty funny.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:01am βrian:

ZZ Top reminds me of the south of France. (Long story). In any case, I hold that there's no such band as "Zed Zed Top."
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:01am KP:

I saw Charlie Daniels get booed off stage in Central Park. His original group was set up and sounded just like ABB. NYC was crazy about the Brothers and didnt dig it.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:02am Joe McG:

@KP: Shame! CDB cooks.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:02am KP:

At that time they did not have own sound or approach at all.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:04am Marcel M:

Ah yes... Provence France... Listening to ZZ Top and drinking fine wine and eating camembert...
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:04am MD:

Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:05am beavoux:

Yet Molly Hatchett continue to exist despite having 14 former members and even more former touring players!
  Thu. 8/21/14 10:05am mains hum:

Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:05am βrian:

Not fine wine, by any stretch. We referred to it as "high velocity" wine.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:06am beavoux:

The original David Lee Roth.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:06am Marcel M:

Hmmmm High Velocity... what region is that from?
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:07am common:

that does sound good marcel. good call, beavoux!
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:07am KP:

Also saw Billy Gibbons recently with Moving Sidewalks. THat was disappointing because it was really just him but watching that guy turn it on from 15 feet away was amazing.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:07am KP:

Thanks for the BOA, Joe!
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:07am PKNY:

@beavoux - damn right. Watching old BOA clips, you see how much of an influence Jim Dandy was on DLR.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:08am Cork:

this song is awesome
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:09am PKNY:

@KP - that reminds me, I still need to pick up that Moving Sidewalks comp, everything I've heard off of that has been facemelting.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:09am northguineahills:

what Cork said!
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:09am Marcel M:

What the hell does the title of this song have to do with anything? haha
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:10am βrian:

It spans regions and bears no scrutiny or contemplation. Pinard is another term for it.

now wha?
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:11am Jeff:

When I was going to school in NC, I don't believe the music you've been playing was necessarily referred to as "Southern Rock".

Another common name for it was... "music".
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:11am Marcel M:

Came in at a good moment Kurt
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:12am Marcel M:

Joe you are the master at being on time with your playlist!
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 10:12am beavoux:

As part of training for the 2nd college station I worked at, one needed to make a "cart" promoting said station (yep, just dated myself immensely). My ex-husband & I were training together, and somehow we made a pretty kickass cart incorporating the flute breakdown from Marshall Tucker's "Can't You See", Laura Dern's "Sailor Ripley, you get me some music on that radio this instant! I mean it!" rant from Wild at Heart, Ministry's "Jesus Built My Hot Rod" and Rock Hyrax calls courtesy of the NC Zoo in Asheboro. Again, so young, but actually it was really good ;-) This is back when liking Pavement was really deep & edgy.

Just picked up this album for two bucks.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:36am Parq:

Had to work but back for the big finish. KP talked about seeing these bands. I note that I saw at least five of them, separately counting the Brothers and Wet Willy as their opening act. Saw CDB do a 17 minutes set, as an opener, can't even remember for whom. He was riding high at that time with a top 40 hit, that talking blues about dealing with rednecks. Can't help but wonder how that song would come out if he wrote it now.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:37am beavoux:

Dire straits aren't southern and the Black Crowes play Faces style music

Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:38am Parq:

Outlaws is one of the bands I saw, actually. Great musicians, but dumb as dirt when it came to 'tween-song patter.
  Thu. 8/21/14 11:38am ron:

I know he doesn't fit the format but anyone who likes southern rock should check out rory Gallagher
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:38am KP:

I saw the Outlaws. I think they did this one.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:38am Stevel:

The Outlaws! Lucky enough to have an am station in Denver that played the live version of GGaHT. Awesome stuff. More Freebird than Freebird.

(I think you've hit a nerve here!)

If endless Southern rock guitar jams are outlawed, only outlaws will have endless Southern rock guitar jams.

the poor man's freebird , whipping post ..
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:41am KP:

ron, the best "southern rock" is just talented guys jamming. The Allmans were closely associated with Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green days). Basically the Grateful Dead loved ABB and helped them break out.

Stevel: yes exactly.

I saw ALL these bands. Charlie Daniels was true shit kickin fun.
I would go see the DKs or Circle Jerks one weekend and Marshall Tucker the next - got a lot of crap back then for appreciating both sides.

@Joe - awesome show. BTW, My favorite LS song = "Simple Man", but I can't imagine you not playing "Freebird", because, well, Freebird. I need to find a lighter.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:46am Cecile:

My favorite performers at one time were Ornette Coleman, Judas Priest, feedtime and Womack and Womack. Yeah, I was weird.

Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:47am Joe McG:

Apologies to all the great Southern rock bands I didn't get around to today: George Hatcher, Mose Jones, Garfeel Ruff, Oklahoma, Jackson Highway, etc., etc. etc. But I'm sure you'll all agree this song is worth it!
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:48am Parq:

Okay, I can't deny it, I am digging the daylights out of these solos.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:48am coelacanth:

Allmans, while Duane was around; and Grateful Dead, while Pig Pen was around, were not southern rock at all. They were influenced much as the "brit-blues-rock"bands were. (as KP said!)
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:48am beavoux:

The singer takes a nap here
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:49am Joe McG:

OH, YEAH, and the Allman Brothers. How could I forget 'em? :)

Joe, have you put away all the records and cleaned up the studio yet?
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:51am KP:

Yes, coelacanth. there's a fantastic boot of the dead at the Fillmore East doing Lovelight for 40 minutes. Duane, Berry, Peter Green and others are in on it.

Oddly, Chris, I was just thinking that these guys could usually pull off a drum solo better than straight-up rawk bands.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:53am KP:

At least they only had one drummer.
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:53am beavoux:

We're still on "Green Grass and High Tides", right?
Avatar Thu. 8/21/14 11:54am beavoux:

It started at 11:37
  Thu. 8/21/14 11:54am Brendan:

Heres some light (wiki)reading on the song while it plays , quoted from the founding Outlaw member Henry Paul,

"From what I gather, there was an album out, the best of The Rolling Stones, called 'High Tides and Green Grass.' That was the name of the Rolling Stones' greatest hits - this is like 1966 - and I think it was a manifestation of that title turned in reverse, 'Green Grass and High Tides.' I know that much. And I know that it was a song written for rock and roll illuminaries, from Janis Joplin to Jimi Hendrix, and it had nothing to do with marijuana. But it had to do with, I think, a specific person's [Thomasson's] lyrical look at rock and roll legends. 'As kings and queens bow and play for you.' It's about Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. 'Castles of stone, soul and glory.' A lot of it is just sort of a collage of words that really don't have all that much to do with anything, they just fit and sounded right. But I have to say it's one of my favorite lyrics. My songwriting is more Steinbeck, really rooted in accuracy and reality; this is definitely Alice In Wonderland. It's the whole 'White Rabbit.' It's sort of like one of those magic lyrical moments that will forever be mysteriously, unclearly conceived."

  Thu. 8/21/14 11:55am Dean:
