1926? OK, fully 12 years before Les Paul was hired by Waring.

Les used to say that Waring complained to him & his trio at their audition that "he was feeding a lot of people already", it was the depths of the Depression, steady work was hard to find for anyone, much less for musicians, and Waring had a BIG band already by any standard. Then he went and hired them anyway; Les became the first electrified guitarist to appear regularly on the radio, and he later claimed that CBS got more mail about the electric guitar sound than for everything else the Pennsylvanians did combined...
