Do check out Selvhenter. I saw them last week and they were great and possibly the kind of music you'd like
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
Doug Schulkind:

This song is dedicated to the great jazzman Howard Mandel, I'm guessing.

Howie Mandel?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Jeff Golick:

Hiya, Carmichael!
Yeah, I think the jazz writer Howard Mandel should henceforth be known to one and all as Howie.
  12:25pm
Jeff J:

Howard Mandel probably needs to pray to Jesus if he runs into William Parker anytime soon.
  12:27pm
Jeff J:

Shout out to Michael Shelley whose great gospel comps inspired these next few selections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Doug Schulkind:

I think Mandel needs to pray to Jesus if he runs into Patricia anytime soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
Doug Schulkind:

I think the jazz writer Howie Mandel should try putting a surgical glove over his head and blowing it up with his nose. It would be a step up for him.

What's the good word, @UM and @ngh!?
  12:58pm

Carmichael - I was just talking to someone about Martin Mull earlier this morning! Love to hear that song.

Is Beck singing about L . Ron here?
  1:21pm
Jeff J:

Much to the chagrin of Skip James, probably so.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 1:34pm

Diggin' it at the halfway mark, gents!
Also, finally read the recent John Jeremiah Sullivan piece; worth the wait.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
listener james from westwood:

Oooh, that Wright book is fascinating and frightening. I've also read the other one, "Inside Scientology."
His Battlefield Earth books have been printed in stunning quantities; whether anyone outside the CoS is buying them in bulk is anyone's guess.
Avatar 🦀 1:39pm
duke:

I have an L. Ron book called Fear. My Dad had it and I read it when I was about 10. Scared the hell out of me. I tracked it down years later. I was shocked to see it was by L. Ron.
Avatar 1:41pm
ndbob:

agree James - turns out L. Ron actually wrote some Westerns
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Jeff Golick:

Got GOING CLEAR by the bedside for "someday." Wife Kate read it recently and was impressed/astonished/creeped.
  1:46pm
Jeff J:

GOING CLEAR will deliver the full-on creeps, if anyone is looking for that. Thought I knew all the dirt on L. Ron but i was wrong....

Pianist Lamont Johnson killing it on this track.

@duke - Was Fear a sci-fi novel?
Avatar 1:57pm
Carmichael:

Is Alice officially "noodling"? Sounds good tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff
Impressed/astonished/creeped is the reaction many of GTDR's bedside partners would volunteer, if asked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm
Stanley:

On man's noodling is another's thematic free-interpretation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm
Stanley:

Sorry, where are my manners.
Hi Jeff, Doug, listeners.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
listener james from westwood:

Hubbard was a fairly competent pulp writer in the last great era when you could make a living doing that. Harlan Ellison and LRH apparently knew each other in that phase of their careers.
The new-ish Burroughs biography (which is excellent) details how deeply Bill got sucked into the cult, to his social and artistic detriment, until he finally broke with them over LRH's dictatorial tendencies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm
Doug Schulkind:

All Drummer Stream deejays are required to play a track by at least one unpronounceable artist per show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm
Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: I read Ted Morgan's monster bio of WB a long while back. Thought it great at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm
Jeff Golick:

This one goes out to Doug -- who hipped us to this great Nawa album. Recorded under not great conditions (ie, let's put this stuff on tape before the whole tradition is decimated).
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 2:16pm
fred:

I once a scientologist coworker, until they told him he couldn't work outside anymore. What puzzled me was how blatant a money grab it all is. They're pretty upfront about it, but it still works. That Nawa track was great, BTW
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm
Jeff Golick:

The celeb-courting angle is also pretty puzzling. Goes w the money, I suppose? And they're easy marks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm
Doug Schulkind:

That was a mast-listen.

I'm willing to confess I don't get the appeal. But I do get the appeal of that Badar Ali Khan track, amazing!
