Hello Doug and duke and anyone else too
  Mon. 4/21/14 12:04pm Jeff J:

We're a little behind - on D:O time - BUT WORTH THE WAIT! Some ear-popping tunes in the oven for ya.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:07pm ndbob:

heya Jeffs and everyone - here for a while
  Mon. 4/21/14 12:07pm Jeff J:

Gospelized goodies and lots more on the way.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:08pm fred:

Do check out Selvhenter. I saw them last week and they were great and possibly the kind of music you'd like
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:20pm Doug Schulkind:

This song is dedicated to the great jazzman Howard Mandel, I'm guessing.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:21pm Jeff Golick:

Ay yi yi
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:23pm Carmichael:

Howdy, numerous Jeffs and others.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:24pm Carmichael:

Howie Mandel?!?
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:25pm Jeff Golick:

Hiya, Carmichael!
Yeah, I think the jazz writer Howard Mandel should henceforth be known to one and all as Howie.
  Mon. 4/21/14 12:25pm Jeff J:

Howard Mandel probably needs to pray to Jesus if he runs into William Parker anytime soon.
  Mon. 4/21/14 12:27pm Jeff J:

Shout out to Michael Shelley whose great gospel comps inspired these next few selections.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:27pm Doug Schulkind:

I think Mandel needs to pray to Jesus if he runs into Patricia anytime soon.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:28pm Doug Schulkind:

I think the jazz writer Howie Mandel should try putting a surgical glove over his head and blowing it up with his nose. It would be a step up for him.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:30pm Doug Schulkind:

  Mon. 4/21/14 12:33pm Jeff J:

Ha!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:39pm earrie:

Great set of horns in that Mingus track. Yeah. LIke a string section, sorta.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:41pm Jeff Golick:

You know it, @earrie!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:45pm Uncle Michael:

This is terrific!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:48pm northguineahills:

I used to live next to a gospel church in Bed-Stuy a decade ago. The music was awesome, but not at 7am on a Sunday.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:51pm Doug Schulkind:

Hitting into an Infield Fly Rule for Jesus.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:52pm Doug Schulkind:

He is Murray Kempton's son.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:55pm Carmichael:

Martin Mull had a great old gospel song called "Let's Give Jesus Christ the Football, Let Him Even Up the Score".
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 12:57pm Jeff Golick:

What's the good word, @UM and @ngh!?
  Mon. 4/21/14 12:58pm Jeff J:

Carmichael - I was just talking to someone about Martin Mull earlier this morning! Love to hear that song.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:00pm Uncle Michael:

The good word is that I am now six steps closer to completing an entire set of Warner Brothers loss leader samplers!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:02pm Uncle Michael:

More jubilee quartets, please!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:04pm ndbob:

great UM!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:06pm Uncle Michael:

There's likely an all-WBLL show in my future.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:11pm northguineahills:

I'll second UM's request for more jubilee quartets.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:19pm Jeff Golick:

Yah, UM!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:20pm Jeff Golick:

Is Beck singing about L . Ron here?
  Mon. 4/21/14 1:21pm Jeff J:

Much to the chagrin of Skip James, probably so.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:34pm listener james from westwood:

Diggin' it at the halfway mark, gents!
Also, finally read the recent John Jeremiah Sullivan piece; worth the wait.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:39pm listener james from westwood:

Oooh, that Wright book is fascinating and frightening. I've also read the other one, "Inside Scientology."
His Battlefield Earth books have been printed in stunning quantities; whether anyone outside the CoS is buying them in bulk is anyone's guess.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:39pm duke:

I have an L. Ron book called Fear. My Dad had it and I read it when I was about 10. Scared the hell out of me. I tracked it down years later. I was shocked to see it was by L. Ron.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:41pm ndbob:

agree James - turns out L. Ron actually wrote some Westerns
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:45pm Jeff Golick:

Got GOING CLEAR by the bedside for "someday." Wife Kate read it recently and was impressed/astonished/creeped.
  Mon. 4/21/14 1:46pm Jeff J:

GOING CLEAR will deliver the full-on creeps, if anyone is looking for that. Thought I knew all the dirt on L. Ron but i was wrong....
  Mon. 4/21/14 1:50pm Jeff J:

Pianist Lamont Johnson killing it on this track.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:54pm ndbob:

excellent show Jeffs - need to go - might be back for the end
  Mon. 4/21/14 1:54pm Jeff J:

@duke - Was Fear a sci-fi novel?
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:57pm Carmichael:

Is Alice officially "noodling"? Sounds good tho.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 1:59pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff
Impressed/astonished/creeped is the reaction many of GTDR's bedside partners would volunteer, if asked.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:01pm Stanley:

On man's noodling is another's thematic free-interpretation
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:01pm Jeff Golick:

I wonder if Alice ever choogled...
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:01pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks for coming and commenting, @ndbob!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:01pm Jeff Golick:

Hey there, Stanley!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:02pm Stanley:

Sorry, where are my manners.
Hi Jeff, Doug, listeners.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:05pm listener james from westwood:

Hubbard was a fairly competent pulp writer in the last great era when you could make a living doing that. Harlan Ellison and LRH apparently knew each other in that phase of their careers.
The new-ish Burroughs biography (which is excellent) details how deeply Bill got sucked into the cult, to his social and artistic detriment, until he finally broke with them over LRH's dictatorial tendencies.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:07pm Doug Schulkind:

All Drummer Stream deejays are required to play a track by at least one unpronounceable artist per show.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:08pm Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: I read Ted Morgan's monster bio of WB a long while back. Thought it great at the time.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:10pm Jeff Golick:

This one goes out to Doug -- who hipped us to this great Nawa album. Recorded under not great conditions (ie, let's put this stuff on tape before the whole tradition is decimated).
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:16pm fred:

I once a scientologist coworker, until they told him he couldn't work outside anymore. What puzzled me was how blatant a money grab it all is. They're pretty upfront about it, but it still works. That Nawa track was great, BTW
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:18pm Jeff Golick:

The celeb-courting angle is also pretty puzzling. Goes w the money, I suppose? And they're easy marks?
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:26pm Doug Schulkind:

That was a mast-listen.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:26pm northguineahills:

wow!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:27pm fred:

I'm willing to confess I don't get the appeal. But I do get the appeal of that Badar Ali Khan track, amazing!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:32pm listener james from westwood:

Nobody here is gonna complain over a 4:10 ending to this show!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:34pm Doug Schulkind:

I gotta run. My daughter has a soccer game. Hugs everyone.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:35pm Jeff Golick:

Who's that riding? Doug! See yuz!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:38pm earrie:

Happy soccerring, Doug.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:43pm Stanley:

Yeah. One of the great albums of its day.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:44pm Jeff Golick:

Co-produced by Mayo Thompson!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:53pm northguineahills:

Most awesome Congos album, thanks to Lee Scratch Perry's production.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:55pm Stanley:

A terrific track.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:58pm Uncle Michael:

Thank you for the music, gentlemen.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:59pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks for tuning in, Uncle Michael!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 2:59pm earrie:

Great to the last tracks and notes.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 3:02pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @earrie!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 3:03pm Stanley:

Hallelujah GTDR.
Praise to the almighty WFMU.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 3:06pm Jeff Golick:

Yah jah, sing it, Stanley!
All reading from the same hymnal, for sure.
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 3:08pm listener james from westwood:

Huge thanks, Jeff and Jeff, for the super show!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 3:09pm Jeff Golick:

Gracias, listener james!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 3:11pm northguineahills:

Thanks Jeffs!! Awesome w/ Al Green!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 3:12pm BDR:

Happy Birthday Iggy!
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 3:16pm duke:

Thanks Jeffs and Doug
Avatar Mon. 4/21/14 3:18pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks for the great company, @ngh, @BDR, and @duke -- and everyone that tuned in!
