Hello Tony

@ Carmichael What are the odds of the Irish Premier visiting the Queen & the Houses of Parliament TODAY?
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 12:33pm Tony Coulter:

Why is that "ooh" so Beatles-ish? Can't anybody say "ooh"?
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 12:33pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Brian!!
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 12:41pm Tony Coulter:

For my money (what little of it I have), G.F. Fitz-Gerald belongs up there with Derek Bailey, Fred Frith, Hans Reichel, et al in the pantheon of great experimental guitarists. Particularly given that this track is from '74 or so.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 12:42pm listener james from westwood:

I totally read "funky frogs" as "funky progs." As one does.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 12:43pm Tony Coulter:

The funky progs show up next set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 12:45pm Brian in UK:

@Tony an early reference to Fractals as well. (Small six headed creatures)
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 12:47pm Tony Coulter:

True! That occurred to me as well. By the '90s fractals had become over-referenced, I'd say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 12:47pm Brian in UK:

I had a pair of Fractal trousers in the mid Seventies, felt just like suede, 'til I realised they were inside out.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 12:48pm Tony Coulter:

Ha!
  Tue. 4/8/14 12:59pm Dean:

Get ready for a resurgence of fractals. The word appears in the lyrics to one of the popular tunes in the movie "Frozen" (alliteration, obviously), which my kids watch and sing incessantly.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:00pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 1:04pm Uncle Michael:

Ack, missed Family Fodder.

Hola, Uncle M! Dug your last show, btw -- listened to it last night.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:05pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Chris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 1:06pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Tony. It was pretty decent. I don't know what got into me.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:06pm Tony Coulter:

Morgan, on now, is Morgan Fisher's early '70s prog band!
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:08pm Tony Coulter:

I must say that Morgan Fisher has worn an unusually diverse array of musical hats over the years.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:12pm Rich in Washington:

Wow! That's Morgan Fisher? Of The Hybrid Kidz?
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:13pm Rich in Washington:

He's still at it, I guess. His original Miniatures comp is one of my all-time favorite LPs
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:13pm Tony Coulter:

Yep -- same guy!
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:14pm Rich in Washington:

I think I read somewhere that he became a follower of Bhagwan Shri Rajneesh, later known as Osho.
Northwest listeners would remember them as the red clad Rajneeshis.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:15pm Tony Coulter:

He did. And, of course, he was in Mott the Hoople too.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:16pm Tony Coulter:

Another sinister cult.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:16pm Rich in Washington:

when he was all younger, dude.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:17pm Rich in Washington:

at least Mott the Hoople never tried to poison a whole town via salad bars.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:20pm Tony Coulter:

What IS a "hoople," anyhow?
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:22pm Rich in Washington:

This sounds like an intriguing comp. Regional rock scenes of the 60s/70s were fascinating.
Have you seen the doc about Texas rock called Teen A Go Go? Pretty cool.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:25pm Tony Coulter:

Yeah, that Memphis comp is a good one. Haven't seen that Texas doc yet -- have been meaning to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 1:28pm Uncle Michael:

A Hoople is Mott. Mott is the one true Hoople. They weren't called Mott; a Hoople, after all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 1:29pm pacific standard simon:

A Hoople is a population of Hoops.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:29pm DCE:

you could probably write a doctoral thesis on that, UM
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:34pm listener james from westwood:

The term "hoople" was used in "Deadwood" as a term of derision for the rubes that populated the camp. Al Swearengen, frequent fleecer of said rubes, also referred to them individually as "hoopleheads." No new wisdom arose as a result on its real-world origin.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:39pm Tony Coulter:

Memphis in the house again....
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:40pm Rich in Washington:

According to the Urban Dictionary:
"Hoople
A useless or self-serving organization. A wasteful business run by incompetents. A public sector organization with no useful purpose other than to generate paperwork, internal reports and provide incomes for its executives."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 1:41pm pacific standard simon:

Like the Laps who live in Lapland, the Hoops live in Hoopland (a bit west of the Transvaal, I believe). There, because of an isolation-derived genetic mutation, they are uniquely subject to an infection known as "hooping cough", which is accompanied by a strange upward rippling motion in the torso.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 1:43pm Brian in UK:

Just had a classic dog chases cat round the house.

@pss The Lapps are good dancers too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 1:43pm pacific standard simon:

Whoops, look at the time -- gotta run!
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:44pm Tony Coulter:

Mott the Whoopsle -- see ya, P.S. Simon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 1:48pm Carmichael:

Oh my gosh, I have the Queen live DVD Queen On Fire. Morgan Fisher plays keys on Crazy Little Thing Called Love.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:51pm Tony Coulter:

And now it's Zedd the Moplin.

Got some Led Zep on wireless tonight - well done.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:53pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Cornflake!
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:53pm SITTING ON A CORNFLAKE:

could someone please enlighten me - TOMMY BOLIN
- WAS HE A FUSION JAZZ GUITARIST OR AN EARLY ROCK GUITARIST?
- IS HE DEAD OR WHAT?
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

Dead as a doornail. Style-wise, a bit of both.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 1:57pm DCE:

Tommy liked the drugs too much
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 1:59pm Brian in UK:

.......and the drugs liked Tommy.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:00pm SITTING ON A CORNFLAKE:

Here is another bit of confusion in my mind
Black Oak Arkansas
were they a southern bogie band or a late 60s acid rock band?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 2:02pm Carmichael:

Southern (from Arkansas) rock band, played boogie and hard rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/8/14 2:03pm steve:

hey Tony, just tuning in. i just a few days ago rediscovered my copy of Matmos The Civil War LP. what a great album, apparently forgot i had it for the past 7+ years.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:03pm Tony Coulter:

B.O.A. are quite comically over the top -- I shall play them on the show some day.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:04pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Steve-o!
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:04pm SITTING ON A CORNFLAKE:

So is the Musicworks mag like The Wire UK arty farty mag for music anal retentives?
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:06pm northguineahills:

Yeah, Matmos' 'Civil War' is pretty frickin' sweet.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:06pm Tony Coulter:

Sort of Wire-like, yes -- from Canada, though.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:06pm Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, NGH!
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:10pm Tony Coulter:

Pretty sure that Musicworks has been around longer than The Wire -- goes way back.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:10pm Rich in Washington:

I leave for a moment and all this Vielgestältiglasterhaft goes on...
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:11pm Tony Coulter:

Ha! Pity me for having to type that word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 4/8/14 2:12pm steve:

which track was the "who wants to die i do not" ??
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:13pm Tony Coulter:

Same thing as what's on now -- was the beginning of "Vielgestältiglasterhaft"
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:14pm Tony Coulter:

Thank god for cut-and-paste.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:18pm northguineahills:

Been here since noon, just busy w/ other things. Today's set is kicking ass, thanks Tony!
  Tue. 4/8/14 2:18pm Dean:

Nothing, except perhaps the two major US audiophile magazines, comes close to The Wire's knack for pretentious baloney. But I'm biased, 'cuz Musicworks favorably reviewed a paper I wrote (not without a hint of pretentious baloney) in its Summer 2005 issue, and lately a buddy of mine has been writing regularly for MW.
  Tue. 4/8/14 2:19pm Dean:

"Thank god for cut-and-paste." Precisely. That's what "Vielgestältiglasterhaft" means!
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:20pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, NGH!
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:21pm Rich in Washington:

Whooo!!! I cherish my editions of Songs in the Key of Z, the book and CDs.
Irwin's like the Harry Smith of crazy, delusional musicians.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 2:22pm Carmichael:

I didn't realize Irwin put out a 2nd volume of Key of Z. Just one more thing to buy.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:23pm Tony Coulter:

Think it's up to Vol. 4, actually -- I need 3 and 4 myself (being far from FMU's library).
  Tue. 4/8/14 2:27pm Elvez Hoople:

"All the Way To Memphis"
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:27pm Tony Coulter:

I'm talking CD comps, not books.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:27pm Rich in Washington:

Woah! I had no idea! There's a 3 and 4?! Are they commercially available or are they just made for WFMU's library?
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:29pm Tony Coulter:

They are commercially available -- think they're pretty recent?
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:29pm Rich in Washington:

I've sent Irwin stuff I've found or stuff crazy people have sent me. Especially stuff I don't want to play on the air because it's local and I don't want the people stabbing me outside of the radio station.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:31pm Rich in Washington:

I do know the original CDs where reissued as one double CD fairly recently. I have it. In fact, when I got it, one of the CDs is misprinted so it looks like I had two disc 1s, when the content is indeed 1 and 2. I had to mark one so I knew which was which
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:34pm Tony Coulter:

OOPS!! my mistake. There are only 2 volumes after all. The others are just reissues w/ different packaging. As you were.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:35pm Tony Coulter:

Should also mention that Sam Gopal is a person as well as a band -- he's their percussionist.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:42pm Rich in Washington:

I've always been curious about Sam Gopal's music.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:42pm Tony Coulter:

It's not much like Motorhead.
  Tue. 4/8/14 2:43pm Future Tense:

"The Past Sure is Tense"
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:44pm Kay:

Thanks for the tip about Key of Z. I just had volume 1. I realized my music service had three more volumes available for download, plus some additional tracks for volume 1. Wish I could see the book(s?).
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:44pm still b/p:

Hoople-a:
In the 70s, mentions of Mott the Hoople kept bringing to mind Major Hoople, whom I was seeing daily.
www.bullworks.net...

Also, apropos "the one true Hoople," I recall a 70s radio promo for a show or an album that said the band is properly or fashionably referred to as just "the Hoople." Don't know if that was a band idea, a promo writer idea or a record company idea.

As of yesterday, I have now seen just one episode of Deadwood, and wouldn't ya know, in that episode Wild Bill got it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 2:45pm Carmichael:

Just read John Martyn's bio; didn't know too much about him. This is his 1st wife, yes?
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:45pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Kay!
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:46pm Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael:I believe so, yes.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:47pm Tony Coulter:

i.e., don't think it was his sister.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:49pm Tony Coulter:

Thank god I wasn't doing this show on TV. My wife just pointed out that I forgot to comb my hair when I got up this morning. Apparently, I've been sporting a ridiculous cowlick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 2:49pm Carmichael:

I recall that he married a promising folksinger who gave up her career for him. In hindsight, worst move ever.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:51pm northguineahills:

Thanks Tony. Had fun!
  Tue. 4/8/14 2:52pm Dean:

Ridiculous Cowlick...great name for a band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 4/8/14 2:54pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the superior cow licking, Tony.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:55pm Rich in Washington:

I was born with a ridiculous cowlick. My hair is my worst enemy.
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:56pm Rich in Washington:

thanks for a fun show, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 4/8/14 2:56pm indeterminacy:
