Is this going to be the first show with both of you guys?
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 11:40am Jeff Golick:

Alas, no, Gary. But we have a plan that could work -- testing this week.

Welcome back, Jeff, and hello, all!

Hello D:O'ers
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:02pm Jeff Golick:

duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuke!
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:02pm Gary:

I'm totally fascinated by the two people broadcasting from different places for some reason ... can't wait to hear it in action!
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:02pm doca:

Yo, D:O is in! Hi all
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:03pm doca:

The two-headed radio show
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:07pm Jeff Golick:

Greetings, doca!
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 12:12pm Carmichael:

OK, DO is here. Now if I could just get rid of this head cold, I might be able to hear it.
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:15pm Jeff Golick:

Feel your pain, Carmichael, and sorry to hear! I've had what feels like one long headache since Thursday...
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:17pm fleep:

March now comes in like a lion, and goes out like a slightly smaller lion.
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:20pm Jeff Golick:

Seems so, fleep. Sadly.
How you?
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:21pm earrie:

2014: Hey March, you ready to do your thing? Y'know, be March?
March: Pass.
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:22pm Jeff Golick:

HARD pass. Hi, earrie!
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:23pm earrie:

Hard pass and a dark stare to Feb.
Heya! April and all.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 12:23pm duke:

I would like to take dancing lessons from Sunny Murray and Cecil Taylor. I'm sure it would be better than Zumba.
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:26pm Jeff Golick:

Agreed. The post-lesson "notes" might be tough to take, though.

Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 12:37pm Brian in UK:

Hey Jeff or is it Fredo?
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:38pm Jeff Golick:

Hi, Brian in UK! Fredo's fine, but I'm not going on any rowboats.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 12:39pm listener james from westwood:

fleep: Trader Joe's lots can be chaotic even on weekdays. Someone lost a leg in the one near my apt—no shit. Be careful!
Also, for those also exercising caution in the Whole Foods parking lot, for your post-D:O delectation: www.youtube.com...
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 12:40pm listener james from westwood:

That's what Fredo got for ordering fish in a landlocked state. Oh, and the ratting-out stuff.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 12:40pm Brian in UK:

Quit horsing about.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 12:41pm listener james from westwood:

Jack Woltz shouldn't have asked for a little wake-up head.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 12:42pm Brian in UK:

Oh james I just loves delectation. Not used enough these days.

Today we take care of all radio family business.
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:46pm northguineahills:

I know Mazen Kerbaj is one of the co-owners of Al Maslakh, his old comic blog was www.kerbaj.com and here's an excerpt he did as an improv duo of trumpet & the Israeli air force over Beirut during the last military incursion. (The full 40 minutes version can be found somewhere). www.youtube.com...
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 12:46pm listener james from westwood:

"My plane leaves in an hour. Think about a pledge."
Jeff, I'm just back from a copy editors' conference. I was awash in lovely vocabulary throughout it. Bracing, like applying fresh compost while prepping a garden.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 12:47pm listener james from westwood:

(Also, I visited the Las Vegas Mob Museum, so I'm also full of mafia fact and fiction.)
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:47pm Jeff Golick:

@ngh: ah, thanks!
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 12:48pm Brian in UK:

Jeff on impulse (not the label) I bought ticket for William Parker at Cafe Oto after Doug played him on Friday. Not really tuned into Mr Parker. Any entry points?
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:50pm doca:

@Brian: I lost touch with WP the last few years, but I think all his output in the 90s is worthwhile, though he releases dozens of albums. Why not something from his band back then, In Order To Survive?
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:51pm doca:

Sound Unity (2005) and Scrapbook (2003) were also some favorites of mine.
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:51pm Jeff Golick:

@Brian: SO MANY entry points. His best stuff in quartet form, imho, is probably the album Sound Unity.
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:52pm doca:

I think neither William Parker can keep track of all his recordings...
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:53pm Jeff Golick:

Going back a ways, he played with Cecil Taylor in the 70s and 80s, more recently as The Feel Trio.
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:55pm Jeff Golick:

His "Blue Series" records on thirsty ear, Painter's Spring and Pastoral Composure (w Matt Shipp) and Scrapbook (as doca noted), are also worthwhile.
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:56pm Jeff Golick:

...and for good measure, the David S Ware quartet sides are great (Ware, Shipp, Parker, and a few different drummers)!
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:56pm doca:

That 10-CD box of his playing with Cecil Taylor is amazing, though surely not an entry point to to his work...
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:58pm Jeff Golick:

(What doca said; it's Two Ts for a Lovely T, I think?)
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 12:58pm doca:

Yeah, I remember David S. Ware quartet was my entry point to free jazz some 10-12 years ago, good days. Still don't know how I got to know it.
Anyway, Brian, there's a lot to cover but all is good.
  Mon. 3/31/14 12:59pm Peter:

I second "Sound Unity" as the entry point for William Parker, and then maybe the first "Raining on the Moon." For more out, "The Peach Orchard" from the "In Order to Survive" line-up.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 1:01pm Brian in UK:

Thanks doca, Jeff & Peter. Phew. Thought it was a kind of dumb question.
Is it true that he also plays the kora?
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 1:03pm doca:

@Jeff: that one! Hard stuff, nice stuff
@Brian: yes, he has an album with Joe Morris and Hamid Drake in which they all switch to other instruments, but I don't know if Parker plays the kora on that. It's Eloping with the Sun, the name of it.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 1:04pm fred:

@NGH 12:46: My mind is blown to bits. I haven't seen Mazen in years, but I'm trying to connect people in Beirut these days, if it works I might get news
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 1:06pm Brian in UK:

Jeff your show is proving to be the most expensive on FMU.
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 1:07pm Jeff Golick:

Hi, @fred. Do let us know what you find out...
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 1:07pm Jeff Golick:

@Brian: for us, too, as it turns out.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 1:09pm Brian in UK:

Just realised, not walked the dog yet, better cut out.
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 1:10pm Jeff Golick:

Happy walking!
  Mon. 3/31/14 1:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Sitting in Section 320, upper deck between home and third. First pitch about 5 minutes away!
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 1:14pm Carmichael:

Is that the Pirates, Doug?
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 1:18pm Jeff Golick:

I believe it is, Carmichael. Go, Bucs! And hi, Doug!
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 1:21pm listener james from westwood:

Well done, Doug! Enjoy the game!
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 1:22pm listener james from westwood:

Just gonna star this episode now b/c I know the 2nd half will be as lovely as the 1st come the day I visit the archives for another listen....
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 1:24pm Jeff Golick:

Aw, James!

(Speaking of the 2nd half, do let me know how it ends, as we haven't really planned it out that far...)

So: any new serial comma developments?
  Mon. 3/31/14 1:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Cubs just went down 1-2-3 um 4. Pirates coming up.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 1:29pm ndbob:

and the Orioles play at 3
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 1:30pm doca:

After what @james said, there's a lot of pression on the second half of the show, Jeff (just kidding)
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 1:40pm Jeff Golick:

Kidding or not, doca, am feeling it!
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 1:45pm Jeff Golick:

Discogs lists Roswell Rudd on this track on trumpet. That can't be right, right? www.discogs.com...
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 1:47pm doca:

Only for the trumpet, isn't it? It's a very international record (as those usually were in Italy back then). I was going to ask if the band was all-Italian or not...
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 1:53pm duke:

This post has Roswell Rudd on trombone groups.google.com...!topic/rec.music.bluenote/qMJO4oQrqoY
Don't know what that guy knows that discogs doesn't, but I bet the trumpet part is misprint.
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 1:53pm doca:

I didn't know this Horo label before. It's pretty amazing
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 1:58pm Jeff Golick:

Yup, doca. We try to grab any/all Horos we can find. The Sun Ra sides are particularly great.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 1:58pm ndbob:

I need to go... excellent show Jeff!
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 1:59pm Jeff Golick:

@duke: I think you (and that post) are right. It would be the height of irony/perversion to have Rudd play trumpet on a tune called "Tromblues."
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 1:59pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, ndbob! Thanks for listening!
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 2:08pm fred:

This is one of the best shows on this fantastic station. I had to say this, like stand up and be counted, or maybe beheaded
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 2:10pm doca:

And this is one hell of an album
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 2:12pm Jeff Golick:

@fred, you kind soul, you!

@doca: you said it!
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 2:16pm Jeff Golick:

"Arhythm Songy" - Threadgill, right channel; Braxton, left channel.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 2:17pm listener james from westwood:

@Jeff: Sorry, got sucked into work there. Nope, nothing to report, on the serial comma front, other than the folks using AP and Chicago got along nicely at the conference despite differing on that point. The casino booze may or may not have helped broker a peace.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 2:17pm fred:

@Jeff: When are you coming to Paris? The recent mayoral election results didn't spell doom for local venues, which is as well as could be hoped for
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 2:21pm northguineahills:

Gotta vamoose, thanks Jeff!
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 2:26pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks as ever to you, @ngh!
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 2:27pm Jeff Golick:

@fred: if all goes according to plan, the fam is headed to Paris next summer, maybe early July -- a 50th bday present for my wife. And of course the rest of us.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 2:45pm fred:

If you can, make it June rather than July, summer is dead in Paris, the best venues just close shop
  Mon. 3/31/14 2:49pm Captain Hate:

Sound Unity is WPs "O'Neal's Porch" band,no?
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 2:49pm Jeff Golick:

Yeah, thanks. We were starting to talk about that kind of thing. Though given our reason for going, I'm not sure how many shows will be on the docket...
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 2:50pm doca:

Thanks again, Jeff! Hope to see the other Jeff around here next week
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 2:51pm Jeff Golick:

@Captain Hate: hello! And yes, believe you are correct; same band, and another great one.
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 2:51pm Gary:

Sending good luck vibes for the 2-DJ testing
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 2:52pm Jeff Golick:

@doca: You're absolutely welcome, and your hope is my hope, too!
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 2:52pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, Gary!
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 2:56pm fred:

@Jeff: I guessed as much, but if any show was in your plans, it might as well be a good one, not a tourist trap. Do check out La Dynamo www.banlieuesbleues.org..., a wonderful place, not sure whether they'll be having shows when you're around
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 2:57pm Jeff Golick:

Mercy buckets, fred.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 3:01pm duke:

Thanks Mr. Jeff. Wonderful show
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 3:02pm Jeff Golick:

Pleasure's all mine, duke! Thanks for tuning in.
Avatar    Mon. 3/31/14 3:03pm listener james from westwood:

Dug the hell out of the show! Thanks!!
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 3:04pm earrie:

A long great slide into home in that last set.
Thanks Jeff(s). From outfield, the stands and all.
  Mon. 3/31/14 3:05pm Captain Hate:

Has the DKV Trio played in the US in the last few years? They used to stop by NE Ohio but they haven't been around for a long time.
Avatar Mon. 3/31/14 3:07pm Jeff Golick:

Hey, thanks, @ljfw & @earrie! Always wonderful to have you in our dugout.

And @Capn: I don't know! Certainly haven't heard of any recent gigs...
