Tony! g'day

Hampton Hiss Band! Hiss Before Swine!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:00pm DCE:

looka that guitar...droolin'
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:00pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Gary and DCE!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:01pm Tony Coulter:

And hey there, Dervish!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:05pm DCE:

we gonna git greazy
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 12:06pm Carmichael:

OK Tony. It's 9 o'clock and I want to rock!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Carmichael! Rocking has commenced.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:07pm Doug Schulkind:

This music really a grease with me!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:07pm Tony Coulter:

Today's show is strictly boot city, so you'll get plenty of that hiss I promised you.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:08pm DCE:

"Atlanta Sports Arena" huh...I love how things were just what they were back then. No corporate sponshorships.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Doug! Or should I say greasings....
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:09pm fleep:

The oily band gets the turn.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:11pm Tony Coulter:

So, I guess this will be blindingly obvious to most of you, but: Hampton Grease Band are the band in the top photograph; Pearls Before Swine are below.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

Hey fleep, you oily bird!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:13pm still b/p:

Spectacled fellow looks like he could be Woody Allen's freaky brother.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, still b/p! The spectacled one is Tom Rapp, leader of PBS.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:16pm DCE:

obligatory Peter Gunn theme...every band MUST COVER
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:18pm northguineahills:

Isn't Tom Rapp a practicing attorney?
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:20pm Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, NGH! He is indeed. Perhaps his ads read: Don't take the rap -- get Rapp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 12:23pm Carmichael:

I stole my line from Elton John. He is 97 years old today.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, general question: I have loads of these kinds of concert tapes, but haven't played too many of them on Tape Hiss because of sound quality and tape speed issues. Should I play more of this kind of stuff -- or mostly stick to "official" releases? What say you?
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:24pm Gary:

Good Lord, Tony ... seriously? You should totally play them. This is great.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:25pm holland oats:

as they said in the arrowsmith video, "let's bootleg!"
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:25pm northguineahills:

You should play all of the above, Tony.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:31pm still b/p:

You can always let 'em roll and see if they get too draggy-whacked and then bail, or insta-poll the assembled connoisseurs and peanut gallery appraisers-without-portfolio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 12:32pm Uncle Michael:

It's been so long since I've heard this that I'd forgotten it existed!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:33pm Tony Coulter:

True. Need to get me a tape deck with pitch control -- that would help. Guess I will wear my boots more often.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:33pm Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, Uncle Michael!

(That "true" was aimed at still b/p)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 12:35pm Uncle Michael:

Hey, ho!

You could capture the tape to digital and adjust the speed in software?
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:37pm still b/p:

I thought about suggesting that but worried that bottles, rocks and scorn would be thrown at me. I'm assuming that original media is purposefully and philosophically The Way for the program.
  Tue. 3/25/14 12:37pm Dean:

The vibe here is a little bit Pere Ubu, a little bit Nihilist Spasm Band. What are "sound quality and tape speed issues"? Never heard of 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 12:38pm Uncle Michael:

Eh. It's a 128k mp3 right now, either way.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:39pm Rich in Washington:

I too want a pitch-controlled tape deck. I am surprised that so few have it.
Software is difficult, as it's sometimes hit or miss, where application is concerned. If you could adjust pitch on the fly, it would be easier.
That's me using Audacity, though.
I do know that you can do it while capturing with Audio Hijack but it's helpful to know what the deviation is, pitchwise, beforehand.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:39pm Tony Coulter:

@ Uncle Michael & still b/p: You can do it that way, yes, fer sure -- but it's a lot more laborious than twiddling away until everything sounds right. I vote pitch control.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:39pm DavID Thomas:

HERESY! PERE UBU HAS NO INFLUENCES!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:39pm Tony Coulter:

What Rich said....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 12:40pm Uncle Michael:

I agree...if you have one!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:40pm Tony Coulter:

Hey Dean! I like your attitude....
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:40pm still b/p:

Twiddler on the Woof (Moo).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 12:41pm Uncle Michael:

There is no Beefheart or Mothers here...nossir.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:41pm Rich in Washington:

I think most tape decks have a small trim pot on the circuit board but you'd be foolish to mess with it, unless your deck was slow/fast on everything.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

[screeches to a halt, conspicuously]
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

MADE IT.
  Tue. 3/25/14 12:44pm Dean:

OT, but I have to mention that during a local record store visit on the weekend I saw a used copy of Sebastian Hardie's Four Moments! The price tag: $15. Too rich for my blood.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:44pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Turnip. Now, that's what I call a tongue.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:45pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

...i get that a lot.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:45pm holland oats:

roland kirk played arena shows in what universe exactly?
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:47pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

btw: excellent mix for today's show. Been a huge fan of both for ages. Pearls Before Swine was my gateway into the entire musical underground, at about age ten. . . .
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:47pm holland oats:

v psyched for pearls tony, love me some original rapp
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:47pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

...a benevolent older step-sibling played me the One Nation Underground album (on 8-track, natch) and I was hooked. Tumbled into the abyss from there.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:53pm Tony Coulter:

One odd thing I discovered preparing for this show is that there seem to be very few photos of PBS out there -- judging from google images, anyhow.

A belated hello, Holland Oats!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 12:56pm holland oats:

better belate than benever
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:08pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Never got to see Hampton Grease (I was 4 yrs old when this show took place) but did catch Glenn Phillips at progday 2005. Not the same of course, but groovy...
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:10pm Tony Coulter:

I caught Hampton's Aquarium Rescue Unit in the late '90s/early 2000s. There was definitely more than a bit of Grease Band flavor. 'Twas great.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:10pm earrie:

The sabres go dance.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:11pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, earrie!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:14pm earrie:

Heya. ARU happened to cross my mind's ear recently. I like how they bent blues.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:15pm Gary:

That was fabulous
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:15pm glenn:

amazon has one used p.c. tape deck. www.amazon.com...
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:15pm earrie:

Col. Bruce Hampton, aha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 1:18pm Uncle Michael:

ARU gave us Jimmy Herring. That's enough for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 1:18pm Brian in UK:

Hello Tony. Do not remember Pearls Before Swine ever coming over here. Not a big touring band.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:19pm Tony Coulter:

@ Glenn: Thanks! Looks good -- just might go for it.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:19pm glenn:

but since pitch control is just a voltage regulator, it wouldn't be too hard to whip one up in your secret underground laboratory.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:19pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

wheee!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:19pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Brian in U.K.!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:25pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

This Pearls gig was a year before the Stardancer LP came out . . secretly hoping for an early performance of "the 4th day of july" but no matter; great stuff.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:28pm Gary:

I have a lunch date now, but thank you so much for sharing that great HGB bootleg, Tony.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

Yer welcome, Gary! Nice to see you here.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:30pm Gary:

Again, throwing in my vote for more live bootlegs in the future ... & see you around!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 1:31pm Brian in UK:

Sounds as mellow as an early Seventies British audience at say the Roundhouse.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:32pm Tony Coulter:

@ Gary: Your vote has been counted. I for one find live song intros entertaining. Tom Rapp's are pretty freeform.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 1:40pm Brian in UK:

Love to hear someone in the audience pipe up after the Nixon comment with the Life of Brian line 'He's been a very naughty boy'
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:44pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Digging the hell out of this.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 1:46pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

STYLOPHONE! HAH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 1:48pm Brian in UK:

Who can read morose code.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:07pm Tony Coulter:

Tune that radio, man.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:09pm Tony Coulter:

Funny how Rapp is obviously influenced by Dylan -- and yet is so unlike Dylan.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:11pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Agreed TC. Funny though - despite all the comparisons, I completely dig Rapp but have never had the slightest taste for Dylan, in any of his incarnations.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:12pm Tony Coulter:

Same here, actually. I like 2 or 3 Dylan songs, at best.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:15pm Tony Coulter:

Tho Dave Mandl tells me I might like "Blood on the Tracks."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 2:16pm Carmichael:

I agree with the EchoDave. If any Dylan albums are accessible, Blood on the Tracks is one.
  Tue. 3/25/14 2:21pm Dean:

BotT is a point of entry, for sure. So is Infidels, believe it or not, if only because Sly & Robbie carry so much weight. But the real Dylan treat to me remains his work with The Band, Planet Waves and The Basement Tapes. Solid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

I like Bob Dylan very much. There, I said it. The Dylan I don't like is bar far the shorter list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 2:23pm Uncle Michael:

BOTT is indeed, a masterpiece.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:31pm Tony Coulter:

On the subject of Dylan, I've always liked the title of this Bing Selfish album: rymimg.com...
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:31pm DCE:

if I have to look out my window and see snow falling one more day...somethin' bad gonna happen
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/25/14 2:36pm steve:

hey all. not much of a folkie but i love PBS!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:38pm DCE:

so Jesus makes the snow fall??? he's got something to answer for. Grumble.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:38pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Steve! Long live the Pearl Broadcasting System.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:45pm northguineahills:

I don't think I've heard Pearls Before Swine do this one.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:50pm Tony Coulter:

One more surprise bonus track coming up at the end of the show: an unreleased cover of CSN&Y's "Find the Cost of Freedom" -- by the Rascal Reporters!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 3/25/14 2:51pm steve:

goddam, such heavy music. every time, this guy makes me reconsider my general disinterest in folkie singer songwriters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 2:55pm Brian in UK:

Nice one, Tony.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 3/25/14 2:56pm Uncle Michael:

Great stuff today, Tony.
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:56pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, B.!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:56pm Tony Coulter:

... and U.M....
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:57pm Tony Coulter:

... and everyone else. See you all in 2 weeks!!
Avatar Tue. 3/25/14 2:58pm northguineahills:

Thanks Tony, good fun!
